Ask Alessia Genova to describe herself, and the first word out of her mouth will be Italian<\/em>. Genova, who\u2019s a managing partner of Tihany Design<\/a> in New York, was raised in Biella, a small town in the mountainous northern region of Piedmont, Italy. And even though she\u2019s currently overseeing the design of major hospitality projects<\/a> around the world, ranging from the Mandarin Oriental hotel in Istanbul to the celebrated Daniel restaurant in Manhattan, she has never lost sight of her roots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s almost certainly why Zanotta<\/a>, a leading furniture maker in Genova’s home country, tapped her last October to furnish its fully functional \u2014 and shoppable \u2014 residential space concept, Zanotta House New York.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zanotta House, which opens September 5, occupies a five-story townhouse at 23 Cornelia Street in Greenwich Village \u2014 yes, the one immortalized in the Taylor Swift ballad \u201cCornelia Street.\u201d Of course, given the collaboration involved, this is no ordinary townhouse nor a typical showroom. It is everything a city dweller would want . . . if, that is, she were Italian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI imagined this project with a real person for many reasons,\u201d Genova says of her \u201cmetropolitan muse.\u201d For one thing, it helped her envision using seminal pieces like Superstudio<\/a>\u2019s white plastic-laminate Quaderna console<\/a> (1970s) in an everyday context. For another, it freed her up to layer the home with upscale Italian touches (both vintage and contemporary), from a handcrafted CC-Tapis<\/a> rug that resembles a splash of paint to red Venini Opalino vases<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Guests at Zanotta House can relax on a Ludovica + Roberto Palomba<\/a> Dove sofa or Carlo Mollino<\/a> Gilda recliners and feel like they’re at home.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Even the refreshments served in Zanotta House \u2014 sparkling Ca\u2019 del Bosco chardonnay, paired with Urbani Tartufi \u2014 reflect the country\u2019s flair for the good life. \u201cNot everything is a showroom with pieces in a vignette,\u201d Genova says, proudly. \u201cIt feels like a home.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Having free rein to pursue her vision was invigorating, as was finding fresh uses for Zanotta\u2019s lesser-known pieces from the past century. In the living room, a pair of Ettore Sottsass<\/a>\u2019s pearwood and brass Mombasa chests<\/a> look handsome next to a midnight-blue Dove sofa by Ludovica + Roberto Palomba<\/a>. Matching purple velvet Gilda recliners<\/a>, two of the many Carlo Mollino<\/a> pieces deployed in the house, showcase Genova\u2019s admiration for color and texture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen you have such a masterpiece, you don\u2019t really need much,\u201d she says, referring to Mollino\u2019s nearly 10-foot-long Reale table<\/a> (1946), which dominates the airy dining room. Paired with sinuous Nena chairs by Lanzavecchia + Wai<\/a> and two hand-decorated consoles<\/a> (1984) by Alessandro Mendini<\/a>, the table provides the perfect setting for an aperitivo<\/em> or lunch. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of all the spaces, however, the double-height gallery perhaps best embodies Genova\u2019s Italian muse. Here, timeless pieces like Bernard Marstaller\u2019s tilting Moretta armchair, designed for cavalry officers in 1917, mingle with new classics like the Palombas\u2019 Pianoalto sofa (2010) and Marco Zanuso<\/a>\u2019s eternally comfy Maggiolina lounge chair<\/a> (1947).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This gallery space includes an eye-catching mix of pieces, including a 1974 Servomuto<\/a> table, a Sella<\/a> seat, a Butterfly coffee table<\/a> and a Niobe table.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe room is complemented by side tables and objects that embody the DNA of Zanotta,\u201d says Genova, noting the Servomuto<\/a> table (1974) and Sella<\/a> seat (1957) by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni<\/a>, the Butterfly coffee table<\/a> (2006) by Alexander Taylor and the Niobe table (2016) by Federica Capitani.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Like the house overall, this grand space, Genova says, \u201cis a true voyage through the history of Italian design, ingenuity and craftsmanship.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t
