This large elliptical wall hanging, titled Vanishing and Emerging Wall<\/a><\/em><\/em> (2009), is one of Hideho Tanaka<\/a>\u2019s most ambitious pieces to date. Intricately crafted from ink-lined squares of paper, it is a kind of ode to the natural weight, thickness and movement of the cotton, flax and paper fibers from which the panels are made, emphasizing the material\u2019s natural flow so that the piece seems to have a life of its own. The result is a subtle trick of the eye: The textile is at once rippled and featherlight yet geometrically robust with parallel and perpendicular lines that appear to be woven together like a dense and tidy network of veins in a leaf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A practitioner of fiber art since the early 1970s, Tanaka sees materiality as totemic, guided by a life force known as tariki<\/em>, meaning “other power” in Japanese. Now 81, the Chiba-born artist studied industrial art and design at the Musashino Art University, in Tokyo. This background explains his neat and formal approach to assembly, using both industrial and natural materials, such as soft cloth, paper fibers, wood and stainless-steel thread. More conceptual is his take on time, which he sees as an agent of change, guiding his aesthetic choices and serving as the root energy of his preferred materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Rhonda Brown and Tom Grotta, founders of browngrotta arts<\/a> in Wilton, Connecticut, Tanaka’s three-dimensional pieces are deceptively tranquil, emanating from an artistic approach that constantly evokes change. \u201cVanishing and Emerging Wall<\/em> is a particularly striking work,\u201d say the pioneering gallerists, who started dealing in fiber art more than 30 years ago, long before it was recognized as a genre outside the craft category. “The layered and pieced paper gives it remarkable substance, yet it hangs with the sense of fabric. Its carefully worked horizontal and vertical ink lines create a code that demands to be read.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brown and Grotta\u2019s latest show, \u201cJapand\u00ed<\/a>\u201d (on view September 25 through October 3), explores approaches common to both the Japanese and Scandinavian cultures through their contemporary art. It features 150 works by 39 contemporary fiber and ceramic artists hailing from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Japan \u2014 among them Tanaka, with his tariki<\/em>\u2013imbued paper textiles.<\/p>\n\n\n\t

Alexandra Zagalsky is a London-based journalist specializing in luxury topics, art and travel content. She began her journalistic career in Paris, where she worked on a cultural guide for English-speaking expats. Her first big break was an interview with Lionel Poil\u00e2ne, the late, venerable baker from Paris\u2019s Saint-Germain-des-Pr\u00e9s district who popularized the two-kilogram sourdough loaf and once made a bread chandelier for Salvador Dal\u00ed<\/a>.

Zagalsky moved back to London in her early 20s and has since worked with a number of august publications, including the Week<\/em>, the Telegraph<\/em>, the Times<\/em> and a variety of art and design outlets, such as Introspective<\/em><\/a> and V&A<\/em>, Sotheby\u2019s<\/em> and Christie\u2019s<\/em> magazines. She studied fine art and the history of art at Goldsmiths, University of London, and continues to explore the contemporary art scene, including the world of NFTs.

She has written extensively on the subject of vintage watches<\/a> and describes the Cartier<\/a> Crash as her favorite timepiece. \u201cIt\u2019s a great emblem of the Swinging Sixties and an adaptation of the house\u2019s classic Baignoire<\/a> Allong\u00e9e wristwatch, its sinuous Daliesque style apparently inspired by a model brought into the London Cartier workshop that had been distorted in a car crash,\u201d she says. \u201cI love it for all sorts of reasons, not least because it\u2019s so unconventional and daring, as all great design objects often are.\u201d
