\u201cI can\u2019t reveal my sources, but I work very hard to find the most wonderful jewelry on the market,\u201d says Lee Siegelson, owner of Siegelson<\/a>, a prominent New York City-based third-generation dealer. These emerald and diamond ear clips<\/a> by Suzanne Belperron<\/a> are a particularly alluring example of the rare treasures he uncovers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those familiar with the name Belperron know that the French designer never signed her pieces. She famously said, \u201cMy style, my signature,\u201d and was happy to leave it at that. In the case of these earrings, the \u201csignature\u201d on display is the boteh<\/em>, or paisley shape, a form that Belperron returned to again and again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe boteh curves wonderfully to reflect the shape of the ear,\u201d notes Siegelson. \u201cBelperron was known for curvaceous, sculptural designs. Nothing was ever flat or straight. These earrings also feature her signature \u2018virgin gold,\u2019 which she developed and finished herself, so it shows the hand of the maker in each groove and texture.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The jewel was created in 1970, during the twilight of the designer\u2019s career (she first rose to acclaim in the 1930s and died in 1983). \u201cShe stuck very closely to her style, and the timeless pieces she made throughout her career could be almost interchangeable,\u201d says Siegelson. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The words \u201cDarde Compagnie\u201d are clearly stamped on the underside \u2014 an important detail, he explains. \u201cDarde was the [Parisian] manufacturer she worked with throughout her career. They were used to her exacting standards and made pieces to her specifications.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

One mysterious element is the identity of the earrings\u2019 original owner. But, observes Siegelson, \u201cthey were clearly made for a wonderfully stylish person.\u201d Which leads one to ask: Who will be next?<\/p>\n\n\n\t
