The day this chain-mail masterpiece<\/a> rocked the runway was a triumph for Donatella Versace, and for the legacy of her brother Gianni as well. \u201cLooking to the past, with courage,\u201d declared the<\/a> New York Times<\/a><\/em>. Vogue<\/a><\/em> hailed Donatella’s \u201cbold move\u201d in \u201ctaking on the unrealized promise of her brother’s last collection.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indeed, her Autumn\/Winter 2012 collection marked the first time she was able to revisit her brother\u2019s last show, which took place just nine days before he was shot down in front of his Miami estate, on July 15, 1997. That show, with its dark Byzantine glamour, is considered by many to be one of his best \u2014 some even think the collection it showcased is among the best of the 20th century. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Donatella would agree<\/a>. Her tribute collection incorporated elements like Byzantine crosses and \u2014 as here \u2014 displayed some of the sleek body-armor sensibility of her brother\u2019s pieces. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was also a nod to the Oroton chain-mail mesh Gianni created in the 1980s to better show off the preternaturally toned physiques of supermodels. Donatella\u2019s vision is equally glamorous, yet slightly more forgiving. \u201cIt\u2019s not a delicate piece,\u201d says Nikki Morton, of London-based consignment service Nikki Bradford<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s really practical. It has a nude slip, so it\u2019s easy to wear \u2014 like wearing a sheath of chain mail.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But before we get too sensible (it is Versace, after all), Morton clarifies that the dress is, indeed, \u201ca piece of art in itself,\u201d just one that is \u201creally wearable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t
