<\/a>The self-taught African American artist Purvis Young<\/a> (1943\u20132010) has been variously described as a storyteller, an urban expressionist and a master of symbolism. After settling in the impoverished Black neighborhood of Overtown, Miami, in the late 1960s, Young began using abstract art to express his reactions to the joys and struggles of a community in strife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n His energetic brushstrokes and vivid palette, along with his observed and mythicized figures and motifs, became a lyrical language of social engagement, at once provocative and celebratory. For more than three decades, the artist \u2014 who often used found materials such as cardboard, splintered wood, carpet scraps, discarded doors, old books and broken crates as canvases for his mural-like installations \u2014 immersed himself in the complexities of Black life in urban America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n His desire to use art as a powerful force for change was galvanized by his deep connection to painting and collage making, allowing him to conceptualize the visceral realities of a shifting cultural landscape. <\/p>\n\n\n\n This vibrant midcareer work from 1995, titled Let Freedom Ring!<\/a><\/em>, is a tribute to Martin Luther King Jr., featuring a found poster of the civil rights leader surrounded by a circle of lively silhouettes. It\u2019s a seemingly straightforward piece charged with an undertone of thoughtfulness and ambiguity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThe poster was designed by Carol Livingston to commemorate the establishment of a national holiday for Martin Luther King\u2019s birthday and had been part of an impromptu graffiti wall before it found its way to Purvis\u2019s studio,\u201d explains New York\u2013based gallerist and modern art specialist Skot Foreman<\/a>. \u201cPurvis is clearly having a dialogue with MLK in the piece, but we\u2019re free to choose our own interpretation. Is it a party or a protest? Maybe it is both. He sets up a \u2018call and response\u2019 dynamic, where, with his usual restraint, he leaves the details to those of us viewing the work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n By the same token, the artist\u2019s visionary aesthetic straddles the boundaries between the seen and unseen \u2014 it shudders and shines in a way that is enduringly touching and relevant. \u201cWhile Purvis was never shy about leaning into social issues, his work is really about the human condition,\u201d Foreman says. \u201cLove, joy, grief, fear, courage and the quest for freedom are things we all experience. Zagalsky moved back to London in her early 20s and has since worked with a number of august publications, including the Week<\/em>, the Telegraph<\/em>, the Times<\/em> and a variety of art and design outlets, such as Introspective<\/em><\/a> and V&A<\/em>, Sotheby\u2019s<\/em> and Christie\u2019s<\/em> magazines. She studied fine art and the history of art at Goldsmiths, University of London, and continues to explore the contemporary art scene, including the world of NFTs.
She has written extensively on the subject of vintage watches<\/a> and describes the Cartier<\/a> Crash as her favorite timepiece. \u201cIt\u2019s a great emblem of the Swinging Sixties and an adaptation of the house\u2019s classic Baignoire<\/a> Allong\u00e9e wristwatch, its sinuous Daliesque style apparently inspired by a model brought into the London Cartier workshop that had been distorted in a car crash,\u201d she says. \u201cI love it for all sorts of reasons, not least because it\u2019s so unconventional and daring, as all great design objects often are.\u201d
