Luxury changed forever during the legendary flight on which actress Jane Birkin<\/a> and Herm\u00e8s<\/a> chief executive Jean-Louis Dumas brainstormed the ideal weekend bag. When the actress’s namesake Birkin bag<\/a> was first released, in 1984, it was all the wonderful things it remains today. Handcrafted. Made of the finest leathers<\/a> available. Limited in availability and designed for an exclusive clientele.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But it wasn\u2019t until the It bag trend took off in the 1990s that the wider world said, \u201cWow.\u201d Since then, the Birkin has become a cultural icon<\/a>, coveted and often copied<\/a>. Even the simplest black Birkin evokes the unmistakable impression of achievement. And then there are the limited editions. These unforgettable confections \u2014 in exotic leather, with unusual coloration or even an unmistakable scent \u2014 are catnip to collectors and eye candy to the rest of us. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We selected a sampling of the outstanding Herm\u00e8s Birkins currently on 1stDibs and reached out to the sellers to learn what makes each one so special. More than a few of the vendors reminded us that resale provides a fast-track to some of the most exclusive bags on the market. As Luke Carter, a partner at the Sydney boutique Three Over Six<\/a>, explains, for those buying directly from Herm\u00e8s, it \u201cwould take years and years of relationships before they were offered one of these special pieces.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Ghillies Birkin<\/a> has remained a staple in the realm of Herm\u00e8s collectors\u2019 items since it was first produced as part of the 2011 haute bijouterie jewelry collection by Pierre Hardy<\/a>, artistic director of jewelry<\/a> at Herm\u00e8s,\u201d says Reece Morgan, director of handbags and jewelry at Xupes<\/a>. \u201cThe Ghillies adaptation of the Birkin incorporates punctures and cut-out trims in the style of broguing inspired from Hardy\u2019s heritage.\u201d (A ghillie is the Scottish version of the Irish brogue shoe.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis bag is particularly rare,” Morgan continues, “because it has been crafted in a combination of turquoise Clemence leather and Ciel Evercolor leather and finished with grizzly suede, one of Herm\u00e8s\u2019s more sought-after materials. Each part of this Ghillies Birkin is so detailed and thoughtful \u2014 it\u2019s a very unique piece for a veteran Herm\u00e8s collector.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s extraordinarily unusual to see the ostrich<\/a> in fuchsia,\u201d says Stelios, proprietor of London\u2019s De L’\u00c9poque<\/a>, explaining that ostrich, one of Herm\u00e8s\u2019 precious leathers, is itself \u201chard to come by, so it\u2019s rare to see complete bags in this fabrication.\u201d But what really beguiles is the piece’s charm. \u201cI call it a \u2018happy bag,\u2019 \u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And it\u2019s one that works across seasons, as fuchsia can be beautifully paired with gray in the winter and with red or green in the spring and summer. Make sure to give it an occasional rest, though \u2014 according to Herm\u00e8s, \u201cprecious leather does not like to live a life of excess.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis limited-edition Herm\u00e8s Fray Fray<\/a> is revolutionary in terms of retooling a classic design,\u201d says Annika Hansen, proprietor of ChicJoy<\/a>. \u201cThe mixture of the fringed canvas with the Swift leather is what people are looking for these days \u2014 luxury that’s not ostentatious, luxury that\u2019s very casual.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nonetheless, its design details give this stylish carryall an unexpected polish. \u201cIt\u2019s done in the Sellier style that is used in the Kelly<\/a>,\u201d explains Hansen. \u201cThat gives it more structure than the Retourne style that is usually used for the Birkin.\u201d Relaxed, yes, but the world of Herm\u00e8s, inevitably impeccable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Shadow Birkin<\/a> truly is a collector’s piece,\u201d says Ashley Stanton, head of handbags at myGemma<\/a>. \u201cNamed after the optical illusion it creates, it was first released in 2009 by famed French designer Jean-Paul Gaultier<\/a>, the creative director for Herm\u00e8s at the time.\u201d Rereleased in limited quantities a decade later, Herm\u00e8s celebrated its playful trompe-l\u2019\u0153il design, describing it as a “Birkin bag of mischief.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere was so much excitement about this bag when it was released, in 2019,\u201d says Three Over Six\u2019s Carter. \u201cIt represents the Herm\u00e8s flagship store at 24 rue du Faubourg Saint-Honor\u00e9, and it was done in two colors: This dark blue is for night, and there is a gold bag for the day. It\u2019s also the first Birkin produced in this 20-centimeter size \u2014 because there were only a handful made, it\u2019s very desirable in the collectible market.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Like other limited editions featured in this article, the Faubourg Birkin is finished in the Sellier<\/a> <\/em>style, giving it an elegance equal to that of the flagship location. Carter calls it \u201cboth a standout piece and a statement piece\u201d and says with a certainty that’s rare these days, \u201cIf you go to an event, chances are there won\u2019t be someone carrying the same bag.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Haut \u00e0 Courroies<\/a> (HAC) is a travel-size Birkin that\u2019s a favorite of connoisseurs. \u201cThis Western-inspired embroidered HAC is a very limited edition,\u201d says Debra Kent, proprietor of Mightychic<\/a>. From the 2021 Western collection, it had a turn on the runway and, according to Kent, in Herm\u00e8s\u2019s advertising campaign as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is a head turner,\u201d says Donna Morabito, of eBoutique<\/a>. \u201cPeople love a bicolor Birkin, but three colors are pretty rare.\u201d Not a special order, this 2021 design is instead one of the limited-edition Birkins recently released with a tricolor palette. The striking combination of Rouge de Coeur<\/a> and Rose Extreme is \u201cnot something everyone else will have,\u201d says Morabito, adding that it \u201cis finished in the Sellier style<\/a>, with the stitching on the outside, which makes it very rigid.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen the Herm\u00e8s Dalmatian<\/a> first appeared, in the early 2000s, it was considered a bit of an eyesore,\u201d says Carter, of Three Over Six. \u201cBut in recent years, it has become one of Herm\u00e8s\u2019s most sought-after bags. As it was produced in limited quantities, it is seldom seen on the secondary market \u2014 so when they do pop up, they don\u2019t stick around for long.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Carter notes that the bag received a boost in popularity when Kylie Jenner added one to her collection. In fact, it is among her favorite bags. As she told Elle<\/em> Australia on a tour of her Herm\u00e8s collection<\/a>, \u201cThe one that I think is the most unique and cool is definitely the Dalmation.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is one of the most beautiful bags I have ever seen,\u201d says Mightychic’s Kent. \u201cIt\u2019s elegant and understated, yet it\u2019s incredibly impactful.\u201d The matte lizard of this limited-edition design is extremely rare, and the finish \u201csets it apart from other black Birkins,\u201d she explains, enthusing, \u201cThis bag is a showstopper. It\u2019s the one black Birkin that is really a stand-alone bag.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Birkin 30 is a perfect size for all occasions, both day and night,\u201d says Arpana Agarwal, of RichDiamonds<\/a>. \u201cBuying a Birkin Touch<\/a> is a great way to own an exotic bag without the extremely high price tag for full exotics.\u201d (For those who are wondering, \u201ctouch\u201d is shorthand for the accents of exotic leather that grace this design.) <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Convenience and color are also selling points. According to Agarwal, \u201cSome bag lovers love that this bag is mostly Togo leather, which is more durable and easy to care for than a full crocodile bag, so you can use this bag much more frequently without worry. And the Bleu Encre color, while striking and bold, can actually go with just about anything.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDo you know the Tom Ford<\/a> fragrance Fucking Fabulous?\u201d asks Kent, of Mightychic, when asked to describe the Herm\u00e8s Volynka HAC. \u201cWell, this is Fucking Fabulous in a bag.\u201d She\u2019s not kidding. The Volynka has an \u201cincredibly sexy smell,” she explains. “One that evokes tobacco, whisky, Clint Eastwood and the wide-open plains of Montana.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In fact, it took Herm\u00e8s six years to re-create the process for crafting Volynka leather, which was a prized commodity in I8th-century imperial Russia. Later, White Russians made the scent fashionable in 1920s Paris, evoking the grandeur of the lives they left behind. \u201cIt is not a subtle odor,\u201d says Kent. \u201cWhen you open the box it just hits you.\u201d And even after so many centuries, she says, \u201cit still evokes all sorts of emotions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Himalayan Birkin<\/a> has consistently made the list of the world\u2019s most beautiful and expensive handbags<\/a>. Its collectors are similarly elite. The Himalayan has been spotted on the arms of Victoria Beckham, Kim Kardashian, Marjorie Harvey and Singaporean influencer Jamie Chua. In a pure superstar gesture, J. Lo has used hers as a gym bag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Himalayan has increased in price over the last decade, a not uncommon feat for Herm\u00e8s items. \u201cHerm\u00e8s and Chanel are the only brands in handbags and accessories that are truly an investment-quality purchase<\/a>,\u201d says Virgil Rogers, owner of Only Authentics<\/a>. \u201cIf you buy a Chanel<\/a> or Herm\u00e8s bag<\/a> and keep it for five years and take good care of it, you can always sell it for more that you purchased it for.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t
