New York\u2013based artist Tauba Auerbach<\/a> is interested in the nuances that exist between artistic genres and how to unravel what we are programmed to see by applying unexpected visual cues to disciplines spanning graphic design, architecture, painting, installation and sculpture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her typographical ink paintings, for instance, transform letters into protracted ribbonlike patterns, while her delicate rainbow paintings appear to be crumpled and creased thanks to her trompe l\u2019oeil brushwork.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The thread that binds Auerbach\u2019s various work is her exactitude of execution and applied sense of order, which she uses to convey complex ideas with aesthetic clarity. A case in point is her oversize pop-up book titled [2, 3]<\/a><\/em>, published by Auerbach and Printed Matter<\/a> in 2011, which features six die-cut paper shapes that unfold into intricate geometric sculptural forms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here, the artist reveals a place caught between two realities: the flat 2D world of a book in which destinations of the mind are unknown until the pages are explored, and the structural concreteness of a 3D form, which is often perceived as an absolute. Auerbach seizes upon the idea of ambiguity and shares it between the two orders, blurring the lines between \u201cbook and build\u201d to create her own shape-shifting story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Peter Kraus, founder of Ursus Books<\/a> in Manhattan, describes Auerbach\u2019s [2, 3]<\/em> as an interactive art piece that engages the imagination. \u201cMuch like artist Olafur Eliasson<\/a>\u2019s textless and laser-cut book, Your House<\/em> (2006), you are able to engage with this piece in a totally unique way by unfolding the pages to create something magical,\u201d Kraus says. \u201cAuerbach\u2019s works can reach vast amounts at auction, so this is a more democratic way of investing in something very special by the artist.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

An unusual chapter of nonfiction also features in the history of Auerbach\u2019s pop-up work of art: Most of the 1,000 published copies were destroyed when Hurricane Sandy\u2019s floodwaters overtook Printed Matter\u2019s basement in Manhattan, where the books were stored, making it an exceptional (and now even more rare) objet d\u2019art with a colorful backstory. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Kraus, the book\u2019s real power lies in its disruption of conventions. \u201cOver the course of my 50-year career, one thing I have fought for is to get people to display books,\u201d he says. \u201cMost regard books as a spine on a shelf, so this volume represents a completely different way of engaging with such an object. You can display it in a multitude of ways. The combinations and possibilities are endless.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t

Alexandra Zagalsky is a London-based journalist specializing in luxury topics, art and travel content. She began her journalistic career in Paris, where she worked on a cultural guide for English-speaking expats. Her first big break was an interview with Lionel Poil\u00e2ne, the late, venerable baker from Paris\u2019s Saint-Germain-des-Pr\u00e9s district who popularized the two-kilogram sourdough loaf and once made a bread chandelier for Salvador Dal\u00ed<\/a>.

Zagalsky moved back to London in her early 20s and has since worked with a number of august publications, including the Week<\/em>, the Telegraph<\/em>, the Times<\/em> and a variety of art and design outlets, such as Introspective<\/em><\/a> and V&A<\/em>, Sotheby\u2019s<\/em> and Christie\u2019s<\/em> magazines. She studied fine art and the history of art at Goldsmiths, University of London, and continues to explore the contemporary art scene, including the world of NFTs.

She has written extensively on the subject of vintage watches<\/a> and describes the Cartier<\/a> Crash as her favorite timepiece. \u201cIt\u2019s a great emblem of the Swinging Sixties and an adaptation of the house\u2019s classic Baignoire<\/a> Allong\u00e9e wristwatch, its sinuous Daliesque style apparently inspired by a model brought into the London Cartier workshop that had been distorted in a car crash,\u201d she says. \u201cI love it for all sorts of reasons, not least because it\u2019s so unconventional and daring, as all great design objects often are.\u201d
