\u201cEverything has a beautiful line \u2014 each individual piece in the room has both a richness and simplicity, almost sculptural on its own,\u201d says Lucien Rees Roberts, of Steven Harris\/Rees Roberts & Partners<\/a>, describing this enclosure atop a townhouse in the Cobble Hill section of Brooklyn. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A built-in bench adds sunny window seating to the room’s Charlotte Perriand<\/a> stools and Clam chair<\/a> (formerly attributed to Philip Arctander<\/a> but now known to be an Arnold Madsen<\/a> design), as well as Pierre Jeanneret<\/a> loungers flanking a Jean Prouv\u00e9<\/a> coffee table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rees Roberts intentionally kept the furniture modest in size. \u201cEverything is of a certain scale and similarly proportioned,\u201d he notes, \u201cwhich also allows the room to feel so generous.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this Upper East Side living room by David Ries and Thad Hayes<\/a>, a Ludwig Mies van der Rohe<\/a> Barcelona daybed<\/a> and a pair of Angelo Mangiarotti<\/a> coffee tables (all found on 1stDibs), as well as a convex mirror by Line Vautrin<\/a>, help create a sophisticated but welcoming atmosphere. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA young family lives here,\u201d say the partners, “so the space needs to be more inviting and less precious.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Against a backdrop of views and blue hues, these pieces with a presence \u201creign supreme,\u201d states designer Brigitte Romanek<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

That said, the Poul Kj\u00e6rholm<\/a> PK 80 bench<\/a> \u2014 which, like the chairs, was found on 1stDibs \u2014 brings its own personality to the party. \u201cEclecticism is my style,\u201d says Romanek, who created the comfortably luxe space for a family of design lovers. \u201cIt\u2019s important that the pieces come together with balance and are always supporting each other in a harmonious way.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An Isamu Noguchi<\/a> Akari pendant<\/a> perfectly suits the minimalist concept behind this Parisian kitchen, which Fabrizio Casiraghi<\/a> designed as \u201ca sophisticated lacquered box.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lamp floats above a bespoke dining table in glossy walnut surrounded by mid-century chairs<\/a> from 1stDibs. The goal, says Casiraghi, was to \u201ccreate a masculine, cozy\u201d apartment that\u2019s \u201ceasy to keep tidy.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis room is a great example of mixing old, new and classic,\u201d says Summer Thornton<\/a>, describing a bright open-plan area inside a Chicago apartment belonging to a young family. \u201cIt\u2019s a big mash-up of styles that feels fresh and inviting at the same time.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The pair of vintage Marco Zanuso<\/a> Lady chairs<\/a> (spotted on 1stDibs) counterbalance the spacious sectional sofa. \u201cThese chairs brought a much needed lightness to the space,\u201d says Thornton. \u201cI love the sculptural element they add to the room.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their dark upholstery also provides contrast, she notes, while a 1966 Warren Platner for Knoll chair<\/a> has a geometric appeal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Robert Stephan<\/a> felt a personal bond with the Vladimir Kagan<\/a> Freeform sofa<\/a> in the living room of this relaxed cosmopolitan home in Munich. \u201cI met Vladi several times in his last creative years,\u201d he explains. The designer’s fashion-industry clients also had a connection. \u201cThe husband dresses mainly in Tom Ford<\/a>,” says Stephan. “In the early 1990s, Bill Sofield<\/a> furnished the Gucci<\/a> stores he created for Ford with Kagan sofas.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Newly upholstered in a Pierre Frey<\/a> boucl\u00e9, the vintage piece mingles with custom Bronzeforms coffee tables by Silas Seandel<\/a>, a BDDW<\/a> floor lamp and a shimmering silk carpet by Tai Ping. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFor me, it\u2019s not about being especially current,\u201d says Stephan. \u201cIt\u2019s more about being timeless. For that, my ingredients are designs that stand the test of time, sublime colors, high quality in terms of craftsmanship and different textures for a subtle atmosphere.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere is a kind of swaying geometry that you can see at play,\u201d says architect Rafael de C\u00e1rdenas<\/a>, describing the relationship among the key pieces in the Manhattan showroom he created for fashion designer Ulla Johnson<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Ingo Maurer<\/a> Uchiwa pendant lamp<\/a>, drawn from Johnson\u2019s personal collection, is joined by a custom sofa designed by de C\u00e1rdenas, a Kazunori Hamana vessel and a marble table by Angelo Mangiarotti. \u201cIt\u2019s a showroom that\u2019s meant to feel almost residential \u2014 homelike,\u201d says de C\u00e1rdenas. \u201cIt\u2019s highly polished but also palpably personal.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inspired by Tadao Ando<\/a>\u2019s Benesse House Museum, on Japan’s Naoshima island, this apartment in Paris\u2019s Saint-Germain-des-Pr\u00e9s neighborhood was crafted as a tranquil refuge from urban bustle. Rather than showcase a standout move, Karel Fournier and Olivier Marty, of Studio KO<\/a>, wanted the space to embody many design philosophies that together \u201ccreate a unique atmosphere.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The living room, centered on a Pierre Culot<\/a> travertine coffee table, includes a Christophe Delcourt<\/a> sofa, a pair of Hans Wegner CH22 chairs<\/a>, a T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings<\/a> daybed and a George Nakashima<\/a> table. A curvy Julian Chichester<\/a> Carlo side table adds a dark accent to an otherwise white space warmed by wood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For a family in L.A.\u2019s Hancock Park neighborhood, Matt Blacke Inc.<\/a> founder Cliff Fong wanted to \u201ccreate a comfortable and stimulating living space\u201d on the same aesthetic level as their impressive collection of fine art. \u201cThat\u2019s why,” he explains, “it was important to have pieces that were of historical importance and great design integrity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the living room, Stanley Whitney<\/a>\u2019s bright grid painting is joined by a Jean Prouv\u00e9 Cit\u00e9 daybed, B\u00f8rge Mogensen<\/a> and Kaare Klint<\/a> sofas, a Charlotte Perriand bench, a Pierre Jeanneret chair and stools and Angelo Lelii<\/a>\u2019s playful multistem Triennale floor lamp<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s the mixture of antique furniture, modern design and contemporary art that makes this interesting,\u201d says Fong. \u201cMy client is not living in any one time period that could be associated with a few pieces of furniture but hopefully something that feels fresh and unique to them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t
