If so, you might want to consider bespoke jewelry. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Experts have some straightforward tips for those thinking of designing bespoke jewelry with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/loose-gemstones\/\">loose stones<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Be careful but creative.<\/li><li>Stick with vetted, experienced, GIA-graduate gemologists.<\/li><li>Decide whether the piece will be for daytime, evening or anytime.<\/li><li>Consider the recipient&#8217;s lifestyle in choosing the stone \u2014  for a particularly active person, for instance, a harder gem might be better.<\/li><li>And always do your research.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe more you know about the gem you select,\u201d says Tamir Pinchasi, of Merkaba Jewelry, \u201cthe more you will appreciate and cherish it.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For this Mother\u2019s Day, we asked three jewelers who deal in loose stones and bespoke designs to come up with special ideas for moms and mother figures. The firm, run by three generations of the same family, launched in India and the Middle East in 2010 and expanded to the Western market in 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEveryone does a little bit,\u201d says Keshav Hirawat, one of Manan\u2019s three children. \u201cBut we couldn\u2019t do it without her.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, what\u2019s the story behind this gorgeous ring? First, it took a family. Once the decision was made to use a brown diamond, explains Hirawat, \u201cmy father, brother and I went through our entire inventory, hunting for the right stone.\u201d They found perfection in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/jewelry\/rings\/cocktail-rings\/gia-certified-350-ct-diamond-fancy-deep-orange-brown-oval-modified-brilliant\/id-j_14744592\/\">3.5-carat fancy deep orange-brown oval modified brilliant-cut diamond<\/a>. \u201cWe sent her a picture with a message: \u2018Mom, you know what to do.\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The choice of brown diamond was not merely aesthetic \u2014 it was a tribute to the rich Hindu culture of India and its symbolism. Inspired by calls from dads-to-be in search of the perfect gift, she designed a pink sapphire ring and two teardrop necklaces set with a pink rubellite and a blue Madagascar sapphire. Perfect presents to &#8220;celebrate,&#8221; as she puts it, &#8220;a most special delivery.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The designs are signature <meta charset=\"utf-8\">Hurlbert-Sarosi. \u201cWe typically either use a single larger stone or a combination of colors that relate to or contrast with each other,\u201d she says. One popular example of the latter style is a \u201cmother\u2019s ring\u201d set with the children\u2019s birthstones. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A graduate of the Gemological Institute of America and fellow of the Gemmological Association of Great Britain, Hurlebert-Sarosi enthusiastically shares her knowledge of precious stones with customers considering different incarnations of her designs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSapphires, spinels, tourmalines and garnets come in shades of pink, while blue gemstones include sapphires, aquamarines, zircons and topaz,\u201d she explains. \u201cThe best colored stones usually have a medium saturation \u2014 they are not too dark and not too light. They have a pure hue, without gray or brown overtones.&#8221; Finally, inclusions can\u2019t be seen with the naked eye. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><meta charset=\"utf-8\">Hurlebert-Sarosi&#8217;s passion for colored gemstones was shared by her late husband, Andrew Sarosi, who passed away a decade ago. His \u201cultimate heirloom creation\u201d is a classic three-stone design featuring a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/jewelry\/rings\/cocktail-rings\/no-oil-colombian-emerald-ring-gem-214-carat-loupe-clean-loose-gemstone\/id-j_9355152\/\">2.14-carat untreated Colombian emerald<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe center gem is the crown jewel,\u201d explains Pinchasi, a GIA graduate, adding that \u201cproper three-stone rings are the most difficult to execute. They are very labor-intensive, and there is no room for mistakes: Any deviations in symmetry will be noticeable. It must be perfection.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Perfection evolves from a series of small decisions. Each design \u201cis dependent on the individual\u2019s personal lifestyle,\u201d explains <meta charset=\"utf-8\">Pinchasi, pointing out that this stunner for Mom could be worn for evening or \u201cmindful, everyday wear.\u201d To properly customize the design, \u201cif possible, we like to meet the client in person, but either way we develop an understanding of our client\u2019s aesthetic and lifestyle.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For this bespoke design, he adds, the best metal is platinum: \u201cIt does not corrode or darken. Its resilience, strength and rarity are unmatched. Platinum self-burnishes with time and requires no maintenance.\u201d No maintenance, indeed!
