Perry and a fleet of ships bearing gifts and diplomats to Japan. The expedition successfully opened that isolated, feudal society to trade with the West and unleashed a widespread fascination with all things Japanese.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the next few decades, taken with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/style\/japonisme\/\"><em>japonisme<\/em><\/a>, sophisticated collectors in Paris, New York and elsewhere scarfed up lacquered screens, celadon ceramics and netsuke ornaments, along with artworks depicting various aspects of Japanese life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/art\/paintings\/interior-paintings\/harry-humphrey-moore-interior-japanese-house\/id-a_6280582\/\">1881 oil-on-wood painting<\/a> by American artist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/harry-humphrey-moore\/art\/\">Harry Humphrey Moore<\/a> \u2014 one of the first American artists to travel to the country \u2014 grants us a rare peek into a humble Japanese home of the era.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt represents an interest in the exotic that was fashionable in the Gilded Age,\u201d says Eric Baumgartner, a senior vice president of New York\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/dealers\/hirschl-and-adler-galleries\/\">Hirshl &amp; Adler Galleries<\/a>, which is offering four of Moore\u2019s petite vernacular paintings from his Japanese sojourn on 1stDibs. \u201cIt\u2019s no accident that Moore studied in the atelier of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/jean-leon-gerome\/\">Jean-L\u00e9on G\u00e9r\u00f4me<\/a>, who made a name for himself as an Orientalist,\u201d a 19th-century term for artists who specialized in genre scenes set from North Africa to the Far East. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/art\/paintings\/figurative-paintings\/harry-humphrey-moore-japanese-girl-promenading\/id-a_6280762\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/wp-content\/uploads\/moore_girl_master-547x950.jpg\" alt=\"Japanese Girl Promenading, 1881, by Harry Humphrey Moore\" class=\"wp-image-400543\" width=\"480\" height=\"833\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/wp-content\/uploads\/moore_girl_master-547x950.jpg 547w, https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/wp-content\/uploads\/moore_girl_master-202x350.jpg 202w, https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/wp-content\/uploads\/moore_girl_master-69x120.jpg 69w, https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/wp-content\/uploads\/moore_girl_master-768x1334.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/wp-content\/uploads\/moore_girl_master-884x1536.jpg 884w, https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/wp-content\/uploads\/moore_girl_master-537x933.jpg 537w, https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/wp-content\/uploads\/moore_girl_master.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><figcaption><a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/art\/paintings\/figurative-paintings\/harry-humphrey-moore-japanese-girl-promenading\/id-a_6280762\/\"><em>Japanese Girl Promenading<\/em>, 1881, by Moore<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>While many such works were sumptuous and lush, in the Victorian manner, Moore, a New York\u2013born artist and lifelong globetrotter, \u201cconveyed the nature of life in Japan without a lot of romance,\u201d Baumgartner says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Spartan interior of this house, built on tamped earth, shows a tatami-covered platform on which a family might kneel to dine, with a tantalizing glimpse of a warm, sun-dappled landscape beyond.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 6.6-by-19-inch work was likely a study produced <em>en plein air<\/em>, to be expanded later into larger easel paintings. The artist was \u201cvery protective\u201d of the series, Baumgartner says, reportedly turning down an offer of a million dollars from J.P. Morgan for the lot. \u201cHe wanted to keep them for himself.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moore passed away in Paris in 1926. The story goes that his second wife, Maria Moore, hid the Japanese studies from the Germans when they overran France.
