\nThe design of the Iberian Peninsula is characterized above all by its eclecticism. After all, the region sits at the crossroads of North Africa and Europe, the Mediterranean and the Atlantic. Not to mention that, for centuries, it was held as a conquest between a rotating list of Roman, Germanic, Islamic and Gothic occupiers. In aesthetic terms, this means that the Iberian Peninsula \u2014 comprised of Spain, Portugal, Andorra and Gibraltar, a United Kingdom territory \u2014 is a melting pot of colorful, expressive, poetic and exceptionally beautiful design sensibilities. These include the candy-colored buildings lining the streets of Lisbon, the curvilinear exuberance of early-20th-century Barcelona architecture and the sun-bleached homes of the Balearic Islands. The interiors of these structures are equivalently diverse \u2014 and even more stunning. In celebration of complex, layered Iberian design, we rounded up a sampling of 21 of our favorite present-day interiors from the region. And while it is by no means comprehensive (that would be a lifelong undertaking), we hope it encourages you to delve deeper into the rich design of Spain, Portugal and more.<\/p>\n \n\n
Originally the residence of the Swiss ambassador to Portugal, the gorgeous The Independente<\/a> hotel in Lisbon reflects both an Old World charm \u2014 see the Art Deco<\/a>-era checkered floors and plasterwork ceiling \u2014 and a contemporary sensibility about mixing decor across styles and eras.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Located in the seaside town of Costa Brava, Spain, the estate Les Hamaques<\/a> juxtaposes mid-century design<\/a> from Eames<\/a> and Hardoy<\/a> with organic, landscape elements.<\/p>\n In a Lisbon apartment, Oitoemponto<\/a> armchairs surround an acid-etched table. Behind, a Ren\u00e9 Roche painting hangs above a pair of Hans J. Wegner<\/a> Ox chairs. The table lamps are by Herv\u00e9 Van der Straeten<\/a>.<\/p>\n In Pals, a picturesque village in the Catalonian province of Girona, Spain, this home’s original, 1900s structural elements are juxtaposed against more streamlined pieces, including an Eames LCW<\/a> and Arne Jacobsen<\/a> lighting.<\/p>\n Located in the Empord\u00e0, a historical region of Catalonia in Spain, this renovated barn cleverly retains a connection to the outdoors: the room’s bright textiles<\/a> are meant to emulate seasonal flora.<\/p>\n Earth tones prevail on the stone and terra cotta porch of this Girona farmhouse by designer Gemma Mateos.<\/p>\n An additional view of the opulent, sorbet-hued lobby of The Independente<\/a> in Lisbon, Portugal.<\/p>\n Interior designer Vera Iachia <\/a>oversaw the decor of this summer home in Comporta, Portugal. Often referred to a “a low-key Ibizia,” Comporta is a chosen holiday destination among style-setters like Jacques Grange<\/a>, Christian Louboutin<\/a> and Anselm Kiefer.<\/p>\n Decorator Pedro Esp\u00edrito Santo\u2019s Lisbon, Portugal, salon draws from the best of the past and present. Frescos<\/a> are positioned alongside mounted foil bouquets<\/a>, and above a custom needlepoint carpet<\/a>.<\/p>\n Classic kilim rugs<\/a> add color to the textured, neutral stone architecture in this Portuguese home by interior designer Marta Espregueira Mendes<\/a>.<\/p>\n The home of Madrid-based interior designer Maria de la Osa<\/a> juxtaposes sharp, graphic lines with softer, more organic forms and textures.<\/p>\n Consuelo Castiglioni\u2019s<\/a> family home in Formentera, Spain epitomizes less-is-more elegance through the use of creamy, bohemian-inflected furnishings<\/a> and decor.<\/p>\n Gallerist Alfonso Icaza<\/a> \u2014 who owns and curates the stunning Bakelita<\/a> \u2014 deftly places neoclassical pieces<\/a> alongside vibrant modern art<\/a> in his Madrid apartment.<\/p>\n Plush seating<\/a> coexists with lustrous gilt-edged mirrors<\/a> and circular rosewood side tables<\/a> in this Marabella, Spain living room.<\/p>\n At the Barcelona headquarters of his firm Contemporain Studio<\/a>, interior designer L\u00e1zaro Rosa-Viol\u00e1n has created a more-is-more working environment in his high-ceilinged studio.<\/p>\n In Toldeo, Spain, a bedroom at Cigarral de Menores \u2014 a 16th-century former monastery \u2014 contains a 19th-century brass bed<\/a> and gilded mirror<\/a> that used to belong to King Ferdinand VII.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Also at Cigarral de Menores, a work in oil<\/a> by the Mannerist painter Cristofano Allori hangs above a 16th-century dining table<\/a>.<\/p>\n Chrome<\/a> and varnished wood accents offer sharp, polished punctuation to the natural fiber rug<\/a> and distressed wood panels in this Madrid home by interior designer Isabel L\u00f3pez-Quesada<\/a>.<\/p>\n In the Alm\u00e1cera, Spain apartment of interior designer David Lladr\u00f3, the rough lines of a converted 17th-century<\/a> convent annex are softened by a Noguchi<\/a> sofa and ottoman and a Louis XVI<\/a> daybed by Jean-Baptiste-Claude Sen\u00e9<\/a>.<\/p>\n A touch of everything Iberian: indigo ceramic tile reliefs<\/a>, sculptural rattan chairs<\/a>, geometric tapestries<\/a> and an undulating metal ribbon table<\/a> sit atop a sandstone floor in this home, also by designer Isabel L\u00f3pez-Quesada<\/a>.<\/p>\n The design of the Iberian Peninsula is characterized above all by its eclecticism.
