Lightness of Being (Crystal Edition),<\/em> new, by Chris Levine<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n

Chris Levine<\/a>\u2019s meditative image of Queen Elizabeth II<\/a> \u2014 who celebrated her Platinum Jubilee this year \u2014 demonstrates the enduring power of a great photograph<\/a> to capture a fleeting moment and reveal a universe of possibilities, transforming time into a space for the imagination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Levine, a Canadian artist best known for his holographic portraits<\/a> and immersive laser and LED installations, is a virtuoso when it comes to using simple effects to elicit strong emotional responses in viewers. A prime example, Lightness of Being<\/a><\/em> is often described as one of the most evocative portraits ever produced of a living monarch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The backstory is as fascinating as it is fortuitous: In 2004, Levine was commissioned by the Jersey Heritage Trust<\/a> to shoot a holographic image of Her Majesty to mark the 800th anniversary of the Channel Islands’ swearing allegiance to the crown.<\/p>\n\n\n

Although the queen has sat for nearly a thousand portraits in her lifetime, Levine\u2019s complicated production arrangements were unlike anything she had experienced before. No tripods or easels were used; instead, a camera affixed to a special track took rapid shots of her, in order to “build” a 3D rendition of her visage. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Conscious of the fact that the intense bursts of light \u2014 200 every eight seconds \u2014 might affect her eyes, Levine ensured that Her Royal Highness had plenty of breaks. As she enjoyed a moment of rest, Levine instinctively captured this image of her on his still camera. The commissioned 3D work, which shows the queen with her eyes open, was displayed at Mont Orgueil castle in Jersey<\/a>. The candid shot, however, remained in Levine\u2019s private collection until 2011. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA few years later, I was reviewing some of the outtakes, and I showed the image of Her Majesty with her eyes closed to [fashion photographer] Mario Testino<\/a>,\u201d Levine relates. \u201cHe said that it was the most beautiful picture of the queen he had ever seen, which was good enough for me! From this 2D picture, we computer generated a 3D version and made a light box for it. The work now hangs at the National Portrait Gallery<\/a> in London.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

Testino was no doubt struck by the softness of this very personal pose, which subverts the traditions of royal portraiture, showing the sovereign as inward thinking as opposed to outward gazing and presenting an idealized image of grandeur and responsibility. She\u2019s more human, more vulnerable, and yet she remains icon-like, as Levine shifts the notion of stateliness to new transcendental realms. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

By hand decorating this purple limited-edition screen-print<\/a> with a delicate layer of shimmering Swarovski crystals<\/a>, the artist adds luminosity to a Pop art<\/a> aesthetic, imbuing the portrait with a sense of fun and exuberance that feels modern and relatable without forfeiting the reverential quality of his original shot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSomeone once said that I have done to the queen what Andy Warhol<\/a> did to Marilyn Monroe<\/a>, and I really like that,\u201d Levine says. \u201cUltimately, though, this screen-print, like the other versions I have produced, is about stillness and inner light. No matter what your feelings are towards the monarchy, Her Majesty\u2019s equanimity brings a spiritual dimension to the work that touches people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t

Alexandra Zagalsky is a London-based journalist specializing in luxury topics, art and travel content. She began her journalistic career in Paris, where she worked on a cultural guide for English-speaking expats. Her first big break was an interview with Lionel Poil\u00e2ne, the late, venerable baker from Paris\u2019s Saint-Germain-des-Pr\u00e9s district who popularized the two-kilogram sourdough loaf and once made a bread chandelier for Salvador Dal\u00ed<\/a>.

Zagalsky moved back to London in her early 20s and has since worked with a number of august publications, including the Week<\/em>, the Telegraph<\/em>, the Times<\/em> and a variety of art and design outlets, such as Introspective<\/em><\/a> and V&A<\/em>, Sotheby\u2019s<\/em> and Christie\u2019s<\/em> magazines. She studied fine art and the history of art at Goldsmiths, University of London, and continues to explore the contemporary art scene, including the world of NFTs.

She has written extensively on the subject of vintage watches<\/a> and describes the Cartier<\/a> Crash as her favorite timepiece. \u201cIt\u2019s a great emblem of the Swinging Sixties and an adaptation of the house\u2019s classic Baignoire<\/a> Allong\u00e9e wristwatch, its sinuous Daliesque style apparently inspired by a model brought into the London Cartier workshop that had been distorted in a car crash,\u201d she says. \u201cI love it for all sorts of reasons, not least because it\u2019s so unconventional and daring, as all great design objects often are.\u201d
