Volume. Texture. Color. They\u2019re all alluring qualities in a jewel, but balancing the three presents a challenge \u2014 one that the master jewelers at Cartier<\/a> Paris in the 1950s met with aplomb. And this toi et moi ring<\/a> is a phenomenal example of their virtuosity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adding to its appeal is the fact that the toi et moi ring<\/a>, a style that has gone in and out of fashion since the 18th century, happens to be a red-hot trend right now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cToi et moi is a symbol of love and friendship,\u201d says Edoardo Grande, owner of Treasure Fine Jewelry,<\/a> in Miami. \u201cClassically, the rings had two precious gems of different colors, but in this case, the style is reinterpreted with two corals<\/a> of slightly different sizes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

Grande sees the jewel as \u201ca work of modern sculpture that can even be appreciated resting on a table,\u201d as well as a rare relic from a unique epoch in the brand\u2019s history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAfter World War II, Europe was devastated, in its infrastructure and economically\u201d he explains. “Cartier, as well as other jewelry houses, gave themselves to the task of offering products where the artistry of the piece replaced the luxury of the gems, since the money didn’t flow as before.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As striking as the design is, with its robust craftsmanship and two vibrant Sardinian coral cabochons<\/a>, Grande says it\u2019s not a bespoke design. Rather, it had a very limited production, with possibly only six pieces ever made.<\/p>\n\n\n

The \u201cproducer\u201d in question \u2014 identified as Perry et Fils \u2014 adds to the jewel\u2019s novelty. \u201cThis jewelry atelier was responsible for many important commissions by the major Parisian jewelry houses, such as Cartier, Boucheron<\/a> and Van Cleef & Arpels<\/a>,\u201d says Grande, noting further that \u201cthe signature and the hallmarks themselves are a work of art. When a piece like this is completely signed with the maison\u2019s name, the individual serial numbers, the maker\u2019s ma\u00eetre cartouche and the French assay hallmarks, we can call it \u2018completely perfect.\u2019 \u201d Now, to find the perfect silk caftan and wedge heels to wear with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\t
