In recent years, multidisciplinary artist Derrick Adams<\/a> has blown way past \u201cemerging\u201d to become \u201ca huge star,\u201d in the words of Michael Steinberg, the gallerist and curator who heads Michael Steinberg Fine Art<\/a>, in Manhattan. \u201cHis paintings sell out whenever they\u2019re available. At this point, I consider him a seriously established figure.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many of Adams\u2019s exuberant artworks \u2014 his oeuvre includes sculpture<\/a>, video and performance, as well as painting, printmaking<\/a> and collage \u2014 depict Black life lived unabashedly well. One well-known series, “Floaters,” portrays carefree African Americans lounging in swimming pools, adrift on candy-colored inflatables. \u201cA lot of Derrick\u2019s work is joyous and celebratory,\u201d says Steinberg, noting this is a radical act \u201cwhen we\u2019re used to seeing images of anguish and despair.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

For the 2019 exhibition “Interior Life<\/a>,” at the Luxembourg & Dayan gallery (now Luxembourg + Co.), in New York, Adams created room-size wallpaper installations of imagined domestic interiors, with collaged portraits hung throughout. He chose a striking pair of those portraits \u2014 a male and a female in profile<\/a>, their deconstructed faces rendered in collaged paper and fabric on a painted ground \u2014 for Steinberg\u2019s Eminence Grise publishing arm to produce as limited-edition 18-by-24-inch prints, now available on 1stDibs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey can be displayed facing each other or facing away from each other,\u201d Steinberg says. \u201cThe emotional impact is very different.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Master printer Andre Ribuoli used the latest pigment-based archival inks to digitally produce the series. \u201cHe perfectly captured the collage<\/a> effect,\u201d Steinberg says. \u201cSeen under glass, people don\u2019t realize they\u2019re two-dimensional, that there\u2019s nothing they could pull away. Earlier, color could fade and be fugitive, but these inks are absolutely stable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

Adams\u2019s art continues to evolve \u2014 an installation of whimsical spring-based riding toys for children, Funtime Unicorn<\/a><\/em>, is at Rockefeller Center<\/a> through September 9 \u2014 but the “Interior Life” portraits were, as Steinberg puts it, \u201cessential to his work for many years.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Brooklyn-based Baltimore native, the 52-year-old Adams has had one-man shows at the Museum of Art and Design<\/a>, the Studio Museum of Harlem<\/a> and elsewhere and is represented in the collections of the Met<\/a> and the Whitney<\/a>. His paintings are now routinely breaking six figures on the secondary market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Says Steinberg: \u201cFor those who want to acquire an artist\u2019s work, but for whom paintings may be beyond reach, limited-edition prints are a great entry point<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t
