For the editors and buyers who attended the Azzedine Ala\u00efa<\/a> Spring\/Summer show in October 1986, the excitement was high. More was at stake than just hemlines. In fact, the New York Times<\/em> likened the experience to \u201chaving ringside seats for a championship bout<\/a>.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Behind the drama was a recent story about Ala\u00efa in Women\u2019s Wear Daily<\/em> that \u201cread like an obituary,\u201d according to the Times<\/em>. Business was bad, WWD<\/em> pointed out, asking if the designer known as \u201cking of cling\u201d would survive. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The answer was prompt. Sticking to the boxing metaphor, the Times<\/em> declared the collection “a knockout,\u201d with a \u201csoft new look\u201d that switched the designer\u2019s focus from the derriere to the d\u00e9colletage.<\/p>\n\n\n

From the moment it hit the runway, this gold silk dress<\/a> with marbled print embodied Ala\u00efa\u2019s new approach to body-conscious design<\/a>. \u201cAla\u00efa had the body in mind with absolutely everything he created,\u201d says Lauren Lepire, proprietor of the Beverly Hills boutique Timeless Vixen<\/a>. \u201cIn the 1980s<\/a>, there was so much of the big shoulder pads and the oversize clothing. Ala\u00efa was on the other side, saying, <\/em>‘Let’s give the figure some freedom.’\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The designer knew, however, that there is no freedom without security. \u201cHe wanted women to feel free and sexy,<\/a>\u201d says Lepire. \u201cSo, the way he makes things, you can feel confident wearing them. This dress is light against the skin. But the way it closes, you know you\u2019re protected. It feels heavenly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indeed, this exemplar of soft dressing was heavenly enough to be sported by Madonna on the cover of the July 1987 issue of Cosmopolitan<\/em> magazine. Of course, when the “Like a Virgin” singer wore it, the plunging halter dress was styled to reveal a matching bra. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lepire believes the current moment is especially perfect for this dress. \u201cIt\u2019s a great transitional piece,\u201d as warm weather continues into the fall season, she points out. That said, Ala\u00efa\u2019s designs are correctly acknowledged to be timeless. \u201cMy obsession is to make women beautiful,\u201d Ala\u00efa once said. \u201cWhen you create with that in mind, things can\u2019t go out of fashion.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t
