\u201cA room tells you what it wants to be,\u201d Ann Wolf<\/a> contends. This living room, in a 25-year-old house in the River Oaks neighborhood<\/a> of Houston, wanted many things. The bay window, for instance, cried out for comfy seating so the clients could curl up with a book. \u201cIt has wonderful light,\u201d Wolf says. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

On one side of the bay is a 1770s English Regency secretary<\/a> where one can work or write letters<\/a>. On the other, Wolf surrounded a mahogany center hall table of similar provenance with chairs to accommodate games or light repasts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

She outfitted the main seating area before the fireplace with plenty of \u201clightweight furniture \u2014 chairs<\/a>, ottomans<\/a>, stools<\/a> \u2014 that you can move around to enlarge different seating zones.\u201d The family\u2019s children practice piano<\/a> in another corner. Rugs<\/a> and art<\/a> delineate specific areas: a collection of Latin American works<\/a> by the games table, three Helen Frankenthalers<\/a> perpendicular to the secretary. \u201cArt draws people to that part of the room,\u201d Wolf says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This lakeside property<\/a> in a Denver suburb, says Andrea Schumacher<\/a>, \u201cwas purchased for the family to enjoy the outdoor aspects of the lake \u2014 boating and spending time on the beach \u2014 just as much as they would enjoy being in their home.\u201d Access to the patio<\/a> makes the space airier, as does the cantilevered fireplace \u2014 swathed in a wood-veneer wall covering by Phillip Jeffries<\/a> \u2014 on the other side of which is a dining room accented with a Chinese medicine chest<\/a> from the 1800s. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The clients requested that Schumacher not hide the bar in the kitchen \u201cso that they could have another area to congregate in and entertain people.\u201d That would be this living room, which the homeowners \u201cuse every day for entertaining, watching movies, cozying up during the colder seasons and having family meals.\u201d The bar is framed by 19th-century teak columns found at Fair Trade Antiques<\/a> on 1stDibs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The L-shaped living room of a family home in London\u2019s Kensington district<\/a> designed by Stewart Manger<\/a> is multifunctional by virtue of its livability. \u201cI like living rooms that are comfortable,\u201d says Manger, \u201cas opposed to those you walk through or by, or that you only use for cocktail parties.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lightweight chairs can be pulled into the seating area or turned toward the piano around the corner for the children\u2019s music lessons or a concert during an evening soir\u00e9e. Yet the space doesn\u2019t trade practicality for elegance. Paintings on either side of the fireplace, by G\u00fcnther F\u00f6rg<\/a> (left) and Leon Polk Smith<\/a> (right), are crowned by Line Vautrin<\/a> mirrors, and a work by Sigmar Polke<\/a> hangs above the mantel. By the chair next to the hearth is an amber Reserve table by Parisian designer H\u00e9l\u00e8ne de Saint Lager, and in the foreground, a Claude Lalanne<\/a> Gingko table. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Michael Del Piero<\/a> designed the living room of a Belgian Tudor home<\/a> in Winnetka, Illinois, to suit a young family\u2019s various needs. In front of the fireplace, topped with a Giacometti<\/a>-like horse sculpture from Vern + Vera<\/a>, two sofas face each other across a French live-edge coffee table<\/a>. \u201cThere\u2019s a large dog and two children,\u201d Del Piero says, so the sofas are upholstered in easily washed linen. That, a television and the sisal rug make it relaxed enough \u201cto be both family room and living room.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The wife often sits at the table by the window to enjoy a glass of wine with a girlfriend. Another table, across the room, is where the couple \u201chosts formal dinners or sets out appetizers during a cocktail party.\u201d It\u2019s also where the kids do homework and play games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lucinda Loya<\/a>\u2019s living room for the 2020 House Beautiful <\/em>Whole Home<\/a>, in Denver, addressed the pandemic\u2019s remote-work requirements. \u201cI have this same sectional at home,\u201d she says, \u201cand I sit at a desk<\/a> just like that to do work.\u201d The sofa\u2019s arm doubles a backrest to form a seat for the pull-up desk, and Ferrell Mittman<\/a> constructed a side table at the sofa\u2019s opposite end containing a hydraulic lift for a pop-up desk. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe architecture called for shelves beside the fireplace,\u201d Loya says, \u201cbut we used them as extra seating or dog beds.\u201d Two lounge chairs<\/a> offer perches for relaxing after work hours. Art Forms in Mechanism XXIV<\/a><\/em> by Linarejos Moreno<\/a> adds a graphic punch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This Wyoming estate<\/a> with views of the Tetons consists of four buildings, one of them a structure that operates as an occasional think tank for the homeowners\u2019 company. Designed by Kristan Cunningham and Scott Jarrell, of design firm Hammer and Spear<\/a>, it is highly flexible. \u201cTen people could work in this casual setting,\u201d notes Cunningham. \u201cThey can have a meal but also have meetings to foster creativity.\u201d To aid in this, a television for conferencing and usually a flip chart occupy a gray cork niche. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the husband, she says, \u201cpatina is everything.\u201d Hence, the 1970s Tobia Scarpa sofa<\/a> \u2014 extra long for stretching out for a nap \u2014 and the leather chairs and burl table, both from Morentz<\/a>, as well as the original Serge Mouille<\/a> light fixture overhead. The ottoman and sofa pillows, all by Pat McGann, are covered in carpet remnants, complementing the vintage Beni Ourain rug<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There’s plenty of room to spread out in this Brooklyn Heights duplex<\/a> outfitted by design firm Lewis Birks<\/a>. But you can often find Anne Lewis Brewer\u2019s client in the living room, which faces New York Harbor. In addition to being a dramatic space for entertaining, it\u2019s organized to accommodate his work-from-home lifestyle. \u201cHe works all around this room \u2014 on the Eames Lounge<\/a>, on the sofa, at the small table [not pictured], where he can also have a light meal,\u201d says Brewer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bookshelves<\/a> along one wall afford access to a library of reference tomes. To consult them, the client can stretch out on the long, cushy sofa under an Arredoluce<\/a> floor lamp or on the slender contemporary Danish daybed<\/a> at the window. Next to the Eames lounge is a Slash Objects table<\/a> for a cup of coffee or cocktail, and next to the sofa is a contemporary Brazilian side table<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe had enough scale to break the living room into two seating areas,\u201d says Andre Mellone<\/a>, referring to this space in a modernist house<\/a> in S\u00e3o Paulo\u2019s leafy Jardim Paulista neighborhood. The central feature is a custom two-sided sofa by Studio Mellone, at one end of which is a Frank Lloyd Wright<\/a> desk for working, reading and writing. At the other end, a vintage molded plywood Eames<\/a> screen hides a full bar for entertaining. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

To the left is a small library with an Olson Kundig<\/a> coffee table and Pierre Chareau<\/a> stool, around which Mellone gathered seating by Joaquim Tenreiro<\/a> (in white cowhide) and Hans Wegner<\/a> (a leather Ox chair<\/a> flanked by Rick Owens Stag T tables<\/a>). To the right is a Mathieu Mat\u00e9got<\/a> daybed, for reading, lounging and snoozing; an Adolf Loos<\/a> tripod stool; two Jean Roy\u00e8re<\/a> armchairs; and a coffee table inspired by a Mies van der Rohe<\/a> design. \u201cThe family is in here all the time,\u201d says Mellone. And for good reason!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a Hollywood Hills home<\/a> in Trousdale Estates, Jamie Bush<\/a> says, \u201cwe reduced the number of rooms to make every room functional, rather than have spaces you don\u2019t need.\u201d Case in point is this living room, which boasts three conversation areas \u2014 one defined by a pair of Vladimir Kagan<\/a> Ondine chairs, another by Kagan\u2019s Serpentine sofa<\/a> and the third by a custom sofa curving around a Blackman Cruz<\/a> coffee table (with a Peter Lane<\/a> ceramic \u201cstump\u201d table on a bronze base at one end). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There\u2019s plenty of portable furniture to pull in for extra seating, including Haas Brothers<\/a> brass Hex stools and Hun-Chung Lee<\/a> ceramic stools, which are usually posted at a Jean de Merry<\/a> table at the rear, in what functions as a \u201ccasual library space by day,” says Bush, “but is cleared for hors d\u2019oeuvres when they have parties.\u201d Behind the glass screen is a bar concealed in the millwork.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a very Texas kind of room,\u201d Collected Design Studio<\/a> founder Holly Rabinowitz says of this space, a \u201cluxe lounge\u201d that she created in an older home in the venerable San Antonio enclave of Olmos Park<\/a>. Indeed, the combination of period details and casual modern living feels uniquely Texan, especially given the owner\u2019s great grandfather\u2019s gun mounted above the bar, the Texas limestone fireplace<\/a> and the vintage Chesterfield sofa<\/a>, which, notes Rabinowitz, \u201chas just the right patina and warmth.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mixed in are Milo Baughman<\/a> swivel chairs reupholstered in lush green velvet and a contemporary ottoman coffee table. The bar and television expand the room\u2019s function. \u201cIt’s a place for the family to gather and unwind at the end of the day and to host friends for cocktails,\u201d explains Rabinowitz. English pub stools with saddle seats belly up to the bar. Family heirlooms \u2014 including Texas landscapes by Peter Hohnstedt<\/a> and a George I<\/a>\u2013style wing chair for reading \u2014 complete the comfortable space. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis room is where I surround myself with many of the artifacts, paintings and curios<\/a> from my extensive travels, which gives it a wonderfully eclectic vibe,\u201d says Katharine Pooley<\/a>, describing the living room of her Georgian coach house<\/a> in the English countryside. \u201cThe space is very much for relaxing, maybe in the evening in front of a roaring fire, or for chatting and pre-supper drinks with friends and family. It\u2019s also a lovely quiet spot to come and read, look out at the gardens or catch up on correspondence at my favorite piece, the periwinkle-blue secretary.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The latter, an 18th-century Venetian specimen, was an auction find<\/a>. It keeps company with a Ralph Lauren<\/a> Art Deco<\/a>\u2013style bar and Chinese export porcelain<\/a> picked up during her years living in Hong Kong and Singapore, supplemented by examples from Guinevere Antiques<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI needed this room to function,\u201d interior designer David Jimenez<\/a> says of the living room in a former apartment of his in Paris\u2019s 8th arrondisement<\/a>. For inspiration, the native New Yorker looked to the French<\/a>, who, he says, \u201clive in beautifully designed spaces that are easily chic and confident.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the absence of a dining room, Jimenez explains, the Maison Jansen<\/a> coffee table, placed on a Beni Ourain rug and stacked with books, \u201cserved as a tiered surface for appetizers and different courses during cocktail parties and informal dinners.\u201d His own custom sectional and a leather Louis XV berg\u00e8re<\/a> provided seating. Later, guests would retire to a moody blue velvet sofa in one corner (not pictured) for digestifs from the bar atop the French commode<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wendy Haworth Design Studio<\/a> began in this living room in Haworth\u2019s former West Hollywood apartment<\/a>. As ground zero for her business, it had to serve many functions, she notes. The Chinese wedding chest<\/a>, for instance, stored wood and paint samples. More storage was provided by the Milo Baughman credenza<\/a> at left. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe table was both dining and work table, and the 1970s Karl Springer<\/a>\u2013like desk is still where I do video calls,\u201d Haworth says. From the Niels Otto M\u00f8ller Model 71 chair<\/a> at the desk, she could gaze at a favorite Pierre C\u00e9lice<\/a> painting. Haworth would host meetings, as well as company, in the central seating area, where a 1920s French mahogany chair<\/a> chicly upholstered in faux alligator, a French-style cane-backed berg\u00e8re<\/a> and a sofa were gathered around a glass-topped Silas Seandel<\/a> brutalist<\/a> iron coffee table. The whole scene was illuminated from above by a Maison Lunel<\/a> ceiling fixture from the 1960s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tina Ramchandani<\/a>\u2019s living room in the 2019 Valerie Fund Show House<\/a>, in Plainfield, New Jersey, was meant \u201cto be a family salon\u201d for her hypothetical clients, she says. \u201cIt was a Victorian house, so I wanted to keep some of the formality of it.\u201d Thus, the gold-painted trim. \u201cBut no one really lives that formally anymore. So, I filled it with puzzles and things to eat to make it a place they could come into after dinner and talk and play family games, away from the TV.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ramchandani deliberately mixed shapes, colors, textures and pieces with both high and low origins to convey that sense of casual gathering.
