Fendi<\/a>\u2019s pre\u2013Fall 2023 collection was a homecoming of sorts for one of the house\u2019s most beloved icons: the Baguette<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The original \u201cit\u201d bag turned 25 this year, and its silver anniversary bash began with a runway presentation at the Hammerstein Ballroom, which is located in New York City, the setting of the Baguette\u2019s ascent into the ranks of fashion\u2019s most wanted<\/a>. It happened this way: In the third season of Sex in the City<\/em>, a thief accosted Carrie Bradshaw, played by Sarah Jessica Parker, and demanded her Manolos<\/a>, her jewelry and her purple-sequined \u201cbag.\u201d \u201cIt\u2019s a Baguette,\u201d she corrected. And a star was born. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In September 2022, Parker sat in the front row, alongside Kim Kardashian and Chloe Bailey, to celebrate that star. The collection, according to Kim Jones, women\u2019s creative director at Fendi, was \u201ca celebration of . . . the moment the Baguette became famous.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Much has changed since Silvia Venturini Fendi unveiled the bag,<\/a> in 1997. This sparkling beauty tells the tale of one of the fashion industry\u2019s biggest changes: the embrace of collaborations<\/a>. The movement began in 2004, with the high-fashion-comes-to-mass-market partnership between Karl Lagerfeld<\/a> and H&M. Since then, high-low pairings have become de rigueur. <\/p>\n\n\n

A collaboration between two luxury brands, however? Never \u2014 until the Fendace runway show in September 2021. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cJones is the king of collaboration,\u201d Steven Bond, proprietor of Montreal\u2019s Carte Blanche<\/a>, says of the Fendi creative director, who before joining the house, masterminded big-news (and big-sales) partnerships between Dior<\/a> and Nike<\/a>; Louis Vuitton and Supreme<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But Fendace is \u201ca collaboration between two of Italy\u2019s most revered houses, Fendi and Versace<\/a>\u201d says Bond. It changed the world of fashion, and the fashion itself. \u201cFendi is not a flashy brand,\u201d he explains, but through the filter of Donatella Versace<\/a>\u2019s imagination, there is glitter and sass. \u201cVersace took this classic style and made it sparkle. It references the chainmail dress<\/a> that [Gianni] Versace<\/a> designed before he died<\/a>.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The final word: Fendi + Versace = bellissima<\/em>. Although, Bond warns, \u201cthis is not a bag for someone who is subdued.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\t
