San Francisco\u2013based dealer Almond & Co.<\/a> is offering a collection of exceptional 20th-century furniture<\/a> on 1stDibs Auctions<\/a>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI never meant to be a gallerist,\u201d says Charles Almond, a California native with a passion for 20th-century design<\/a>. But he did become one, founding Almond & Co.<\/a> in San Francisco in 2011. The existence of 1stDibs, then just over a decade old, was one thing that had helped spur him on to become a dealer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy collection got so big,\u201d says Almond, who now lives in Rome. The site was the perfect place to share it with the world. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, the treasures in his trove, some of which are featured in his 20,000-square-foot gallery, number in the thousands, and it makes perfect sense that he would also be an early adopter of selling on 1stDibs Auctions<\/a>, a platform introduced this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Almond’s current auction offering of 70-plus objects<\/a> spans decades, with a credenza by Frank Lloyd Wright<\/a> mingling with furniture by Frank Gehry<\/a>. Many of the pieces boast bright colors or sinuous curves. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He makes a point of casting a wide net. \u201cI\u2019m a 20th-century collector, but I don\u2019t discriminate against contemporary makers,\u201d Almond says. \u201cI love finding new talent, especially when it mixes well with older things.\u201d Occasionally, those things aren\u2019t just older but antique. \u201cI\u2019ll find myself collecting back to the Arts and Crafts<\/a> period and aesthetic movement<\/a>, to see the seeds of the 20th century,\u201d he explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here, Almond talks through four particular stand-outs from his 1stDibs Auctions collection. \u201cNot all of them are things I want to part with,\u201d he says. But he will reluctantly do so, to the benefit of bidders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gio Ponti<\/a> (1891\u20131979) was a wildly prolific<\/a> Italian architect and designer, responsible for more than 100 completed buildings and countless iconic objects, like his Superleggera chairs<\/a>. This drop-leaf table<\/a> has the ultimate \u201970s color combination \u2014 orange and red \u2014 on its lacquered top.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEverything he did is so collectible<\/a>,\u201d says Almond. \u201cBut authenticated pieces like this one are rare. I bought this from his granddaughter, who lives in Florence.\u201d He adds, \u201cBeing in Italy is great for me as a buyer.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The table displays ingenuity, as in the shape of its interlocking legs. But ultimately, Almond says, \u201cit\u2019s the simplicity that wins me over.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sonia Delaunay<\/a> (1885\u20131979) was a passionate color theorist<\/a> and employer of strong hues in her work, as was her noted painter husband, Robert Delaunay<\/a>. She worked in a variety of media, from painting and sculpture<\/a> to fashion, but is perhaps best remembered for her textiles, especially her rugs<\/a>. Among her many achievements, she was the first living female artist to have a retrospective at the Louvre<\/a>, in 1964.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cShe\u2019s the most underrated artist of her era,\u201d says Almond. \u201cI love her artwork.\u201d In fact, this hand-tufted wool rug<\/a>, which has an Art Deco<\/a> geometric pattern, was the inspiration for a whole booth Almond mounted at the FOG art fair<\/a> in San Francisco several years ago. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The interlocking blocks of blue, orange, black, red and yellow are irresistible. \u201cI respond to color,\u201d Almond says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Netherlands has a reputation as a hub for cutting-edge design<\/a>, from Droog<\/a>\u2019s witty wares to the buildings of Rem Koolhaas. Its avant-garde roots go way back. RAAK<\/a>, founded in 1954, was one of the 20th century\u2019s most innovative lighting manufacturers, employing such artisans as Willem van Oyen<\/a> to make striking designs, like a series that was inspired by the stained glass in Chartres Cathedral. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The brass hardware of this chandelier<\/a>, by Finnish designer Nanny Still<\/a> (1926\u20132009), holds seven art-glass \u201cstalactites\u201d in bright colors, all hanging at different lengths. Their quirky shapes mark the fixture as a mid-century<\/a> creation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI love the whole world of glass artistry<\/a>, especially lighting design<\/a>,\u201d says Almond. This particular piece, he adds, is \u201cradical and organic, appealing to anyone who responds to abstract art<\/a>.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A female maker in an earlier era, Still did not get credit for all her work at the time. \u201cI don\u2019t think they ever put her name to it,\u201d says Almond. This provides extra motivation for him to \u201ccelebrate an underestimated person, a woman artist.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These chairs<\/a> sport seats and backs of burgundy leather, held in place by rivets. The dramatic, swooping lines make them sculptures in their own right. \u201cIf someone made these today, they\u2019d be celebrated as a major furniture designer,\u201d Almond says, emphasizing the bold contemporary style.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Guglielmo Pecorini<\/a>, an Italian designer, was known for his wood creations and often included carved fruit and nut forms in his work. \u201cI got them in Italy, and they are super cool \u2014 I really don\u2019t want to sell them,\u201d says Almond. \u201cBut there are always beautiful new things to find.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t
