Smith<\/a> says that for this barn-like post-and-beam <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/project\/new-colonial-saltbox-east-hampton-ny\/74953\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hamptons home<\/a> by architecture firm <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/design-firms\/ferguson-shamamian-architects\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ferguson &amp; Shamamian<\/a>, he was \u201ctrying to concentrate on the most reductive aspects of vernacular American style \u2014 the organic, almost agrarian saltbox form \u2014 as a starting point but pushing them in an interesting way.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To that end, he conceived the dining area of the open-plan great room as a \u201cvision of the materiality and simplicity of agrarian life,\u201d with handmade <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/buy\/ladder-back-chairs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ladderback chairs<\/a> from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/dealers\/jamb-ltd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jamb<\/a> and a custom <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/tables\/material\/reclaimed-wood\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reclaimed-wood table<\/a>. Called <em>Tranquility<\/em>, it was made from a single block of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/art\/sculptures\/material\/clay\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">clay<\/a> by an anonymous artist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the time, their residence was under renovation, so they had the stair adjusted to wrap partially around the work. That belief led her to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/tom-corbin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tom Corbin<\/a> sculpture that surveys the living room from one corner. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At nearly six feet tall, she notes, it adds verticality to an otherwise low-slung group of furnishings, which includes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/seating\/period\/21st-century-and-contemporary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">contemporary seating<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/?item-type=antique-vintage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">antiques<\/a> found on her travels in Italy. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/tables\/coffee-tables-cocktail-tables\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">coffee table<\/a> is a repurposed 18th-century altar with its original water gilding, to which she added a marble top and claw-foot legs. The bust, as well as the marble columns with bisque figures of Zeus\u2019s progeny Athena and Aphrodite, enhances the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/style\/neoclassical\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">neoclassical<\/a> envelope of the interior, which retains its original <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/buy\/boiserie-elements\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">boiserie<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the center of the room, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/louis-xiv-xv-xvi-styles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Louis XVI\u2013style chairs<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/moissonnier\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Moissonnier<\/a> (upholstered in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/buy\/timothy-corrigan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Corrigan\u2019s own Madeleine velvet<\/a> for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/dealers\/schumacher\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Schumacher<\/a>) gather round a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/tables\/dining-room-tables\/period\/1970s\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1970s table<\/a> in lacquer and polished brass. An entry hall adjacent to a high-ceilinged great room accomplishes some of this. Here, Leila Walker\u2019s <em>Unknotted<\/em>, a sculpture composed of shimmery, diaphanous fabrics over a metal armature, \u201cstops your eye before it continues out to the view of the bay,\u201d says the designer, who raised it on a pedestal for a more presentational look. \u201cShe loved how evocative it was of a little girl reading.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That piece is joined by a trio of stacked-stone totems. The couple commissioned the work directly from Shotz, who is best known for much larger sculptures and public installations. But she animated the orthogonal neatness with art, placing one of Conrad Shawcross\u2019s Fracture sculptures, made of weathered steel, in the corner. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe piece brings a totally different dimension to the room and, for me, completely makes the space work,\u201d she says. \u201cIt gives the room life. And that&#8217;s the point for Sara Cukerbaum, founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/design-firms\/slic-interiors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SLIC Design<\/a>, in Austin, Texas. This bath is part of the primary bedroom suite she built onto <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/project\/south-austin-mid-century-austin-tx\/255152\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">her own circa 1963 bungalow<\/a> in the city. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The white-painted terracotta bricks chime with the home\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/style\/mid-century-modern\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mid-century<\/a> vibe, as do 1950s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/dominioni\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Luigi Caccia Dominioni<\/a> brass lights, purchased through 1stDibs. Cukerbaum found the ebony-stained wood torso  on her travels. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen we bring art into a kitchen or bath,\u201d she explains, \u201cit\u2019s to give it more character and personality. The piece in question is a reflective glass sculpture by artist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/jeff-zimmerman\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jeff Zimmerman<\/a>, purchased from Tribeca gallery <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/dealers\/r-and-company\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">R &amp; Company<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The work hangs in the living area of a long multiuse room that also includes a dining area, a kitchen and a breakfast nook. \u201cI thought it would be dynamic to see the whole space in reflective spheres that are activated with any signs of life and draw your attention and your eye up to it,\u201d she says. The eclectic furnishings \u2014 original <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/gio-ponti\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gio Ponti<\/a> chairs, custom <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/style\/suzani\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Suzani<\/a> poufs, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/seating\/lounge-chairs\/period\/1970s\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1970s lounge chair<\/a> upholstered in silver lam\u00e9 \u2014 are joined by a mechanized Tom Haney sculpture, next to the fireplace, depicting a man hawking merchandise from inside his coat. Clearly, the homeowner is a collector with a sense of humor. The mobile, adds Nickey, \u201cis the first piece I bought. Knistian that he purchased in Palm Springs. It now sits in front of the kitchen fireplace in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/design-firms\/vance-burke-design-inc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">his Palm Springs home<\/a>, framed by a mantel of Emperador marble. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m always attracted to circles and squares,\u201d he explains. In the family room, Mohon used an African <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/buy\/dogon-ladder\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dogon ladder<\/a> they had purchased on their travels as a sculptural element. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIts strong graphic profile, heft and dark finish help balance the darker millwork and fireplace on the opposite side,\u201d he explains. \u201cIts shape also stands in sharp contrast to all the straight lines and the clean nature of the millwork. This piece keeps the room interesting and dynamic.\u201d Materially, it also has a rapport with the chunky wood and rustic carving of two tables in the seating area. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/lighting\/decorative-lighting-lamps\/dorica-floor-lamp-jordi-miralbell-mariona-raventos\/id-f_28993572\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">D\u00f3rica floor lamp<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/santa-and-cole\/furniture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Santa &amp; Cole<\/a> mirrors the rounded corners of Keck\u2019s custom-designed tambour cabinet. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A niche in the latter holds the pivotal element, one that adds a sense of time and history. <em>Leg with Blue Wing<\/em>, a clay and bronze sculpture by American artist Stephen De Staebler, \u201cpays homage to antiquity while capturing relationships connecting the body and earth,\u201d says Keck. \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/reasons-to-collect-art\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Art expands one\u2019s experience in the space<\/a>. . . . It sits on a pedestal before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/andrew-moore-1957-american\/art\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Andrew Moore<\/a>\u2019s photograph of an enfilade of galleries in the Hermitage, <em>Room 348, Detail, St. Petersburg<\/em>, from Jackson Fine Art. Because of the picture&#8217;s scale, the sculpture appears to be on exhibit in the museum too. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bright white walls with classical details and sunny yellow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/hickory-chair-furniture-company\/furniture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hickory Chair<\/a> seating around a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/made-goods\/furniture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Made Goods<\/a> pedestal table bring the 1930s residence into the now. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/oly-studio\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Oly Studio<\/a>\u2019s white modern sculpture creates an interesting counterpoint to the \u00c9mond nearby. Without it, the vibe would have been completely different. The space&#8217;s individual elements \u2014 the light stone tiles, the dark the pool, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/buy\/live-edge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">live-edge<\/a> wood lounge chairs \u2014 in themselves would certainly have been evocative enough to create a \u201cluxurious environment,\u201d says the firm\u2019s partner and studio leader, Greg Keffer, who spearheaded the project. But they attained depth and meaning with the inclusion of Plensa\u2019s artwork. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The design scheme has since changed, and the sculpture has been removed, but Keffer feels it brought an incontrovertibly serene, still presence to whatever was around it. \u201cWe love how it added volume and drew the eye to the view of the Hudson River,\u201d Keffer explains. \u201cPlensa\u2019s work evokes the human body, memory and spirit, all ideas we celebrated throughout the hotel.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Interior designer Michael S.
