Interior design trends may not move as fast as gold futures or be as fickle as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/fashion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fashion<\/a>, but they, too, are subject to swings of the pendulum. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1stDibs has been quantifying international design swirls and eddies for the past six years in our annual online Designer Trends Survey. Photo by Shade Degges<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The overarching trend of the past year, expected to continue into 2023, is biophilia, or love of nature \u2014 a heightened appreciation of all things organic, from leafy shades of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/?color=green\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">green<\/a> to earthy materials like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/material\/stone\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">stone<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/material\/wood\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wood<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/material\/bronze\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bronze<\/a>. After so much unwelcome confinement during peak COVID, the desire to connect with the natural world has become a dominant theme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe were inside for so long, people want to be immersed in nature and natural materials,\u201d says San Francisco\u2013based designer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/design-firms\/michael-hilal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Michael Hilal<\/a>, who constructed a rugged sandstone wall for the living room of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/project\/pine-needles-del-mar-ca\/226172\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a newly built California home<\/a>, which he then filled with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/collections\/organic-shapes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">organically shaped<\/a> seating and hand-hewn wood pieces. \u201cWhile the idea might feel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/style\/bohemian\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">boho<\/a> on its face, the look has become very sophisticated, with people using natural materials in a curated, thoughtful way.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Read on for more of the 2023 forecast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\">1. That includes such things as use of responsibly harvested woods and recycled fabrics, maximizing natural light and improving indoor air quality with plants, which 91 percent predicted will remain a major trend going forward. Photo by Chris Mottalini<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/period\/1980s\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1980s<\/a> \u2014 think pastels and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/chintz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">chintz<\/a> \u2014 will live to see another day in 2023, said 28 percent of designers surveyed, besting even the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/introspective-magazine\/mid-century-modernisms-first-comeback\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ever-popular<\/a> mid-century modernism of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/period\/1950s\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1950s<\/a> (23 percent). Lavender (14 percent) spiked by 8 percentage points from the year before, with mauve rising by 4 points to 13 percent, lending credence to the notion that 1980s colors are on their way back. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>White declined in popularity overall, endorsed as the number-one color by only 14 percent of designers in our survey, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/interior-design-trends-2022\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">versus 24 percent the year before<\/a>. Gray, too, has had its day, with light gray receiving just 5 percent of votes. Kitchens are an exception. There, white still reigns supreme, say 39 percent of designers surveyed; it\u2019s followed by light greens, dark greens and light brown or tan. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But even in the kitchen, Seattle-based designer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/design-firms\/heidi-caillier-design\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Heidi Caillier<\/a> has embraced the move away from an all-white aesthetic, choosing light green cabinetry for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/project\/n28-tudor-tacoma-wa\/170992\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">her own Tacoma, Washington, home<\/a>. \u201cThere\u2019s a shift in the direction of warmer earth tones \u2014 browns, greens, terracotta \u2014 and away from stark white and gray interiors,\u201d she says. \u201cPeople crave comfort these days. They want their homes to feel lived in and cozy, not sterile.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\">4. It feels like the heavy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/material\/quartz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">quartz<\/a> trend is fading a bit.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\">6. They\u2019ve also sourced non-custom pieces from a broad swath of categories \u2014 from artisanal to mass-manufactured, vintage and antique to contemporary. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The non-customized share expanded from 43 percent in 2018 to 53 percent in 2022, our survey results show, while the use of customized pieces declined somewhat, from 58 percent to 47 percent during the same period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, it\u2019s clear from the stats that purchases from artisanal makers are strong and steadily rising. Fewer than 50 percent of designers said they planned to source from individual craftspeople four years ago; that number has risen significantly for 2023, to an impressive anticipated 65 percent, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/introspective-magazine\/craft-britain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">even higher (76 percent) in the UK<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And no wonder: that\u2019s how you get highly original results, as in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/photo\/contemporary-living-room-scarsdale-ny\/6760092\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">intriguingly eclectic living room<\/a> of a Scarsdale, New York, home by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/design-firms\/lucy-harris-studio\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lucy Harris Studio<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\">8. The remainder anticipate no change or a drop in the number of projects they\u2019ll be taking on in the coming year, perhaps because their clients feel freer to focus on travel and other pursuits. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But while interest in quarantine-friendly spaces, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/photos\/room\/office-and-study\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">home offices<\/a>, has taken a big hit \u2014 the number of designers reporting a surge in actual home office commissions received declined from 28 percent in 2020 to 19 percent in 2022, and only 32 percent of designers anticipate them in 2023, compared to 66 percent who expected them two years ago \u2014 enthusiasm for the heart of the house is holding steady. In the emerging-from-COVID era, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/photos\/room\/kitchen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">kitchens<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/photos\/room\/living-room\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">living rooms<\/a> are taking precedence once again. Fifty-six percent of designers look forward to kitchen redos and upgrades in the year to come; 45 percent expect to tackle living room projects. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\">Survey Methodology&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>1stDibs\u2019 annual online Designer Trends Survey, which began in 2018, is conducted by Surveys &amp; Forecasts, LLC, a strategic research consultancy based in South Norwalk, Connecticut. The latest survey, conducted from August to September 2022, tabulated responses from 880 interior designers who are members of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/trade\/rewards\/overview\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1stDibs\u2019 Trade 1st Program<\/a>. Respondents who completed the survey were emailed a virtual gift certificate for $25 (UK respondents received certificates for \u00a325).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The majority of participants (79 percent) were U.S.-based, with the next-largest group from the UK and Ireland (10 percent). Sole practitioners and small companies of two to four people accounted for 68 percent of all participants.
