In addition to balancing the asymmetrical space, they offered other benefits. \u201cLow chairs are very comfortable,\u201d the designer says. \u201cThere&#8217;s something very appealing about their scale in respect to the millwork.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Connecting the area with the rest of the room is a glass-topped <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/tables\/coffee-tables-cocktail-tables\/material\/iron\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">iron coffee table<\/a> in the style of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/diego-giacometti\/\">Diego Giacometti<\/a>, designed by the firm and forged at a local ironworks. Levitties paired the custom piece with a cozy mid-century <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/seating\/sofas\/origin\/french\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">French sofa<\/a>. Under the warm <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/rugs-carpets\/?color=beige\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tan carpet<\/a>, the original mahogany floors are stained a dark red. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA library should be a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/collections\/wunderkammer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cabinet of curiosities<\/a>,\u201d Levitties says, noting that the objects on the room\u2019s shelves and picture rails frequently change. You just focus on the wow factor.\u201d He lacquered the walls a deep oxblood and installed a large <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/paul-dupre-lafon\/furniture\/\">Paul Dupr\u00e9-Lafon<\/a> coffee table with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/material\/travertine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">travertine<\/a> top, which helped create the illusion of more space. \u201cI kind of overfilled the room in a way,\u201d he says. \u201cBut that actually works to its benefit to make it feel bigger than it really is.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To instill a little \u201cearthiness and warmth,\u201d Beckstedt put a distressed-leather <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/seating\/sofas\/style\/chesterfield\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">chesterfield sofa<\/a> center stage and used the clients\u2019 own embroidered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/seating\/armchairs\/style\/louis-xiv\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Louis XIV chair<\/a> for a bit of contrast. Overhead is a graceful yet functional chandelier from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/e-f-chapman\/furniture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">E.F. With this in mind, instead of a traditional <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/tables\/desks-writing-tables\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">desk<\/a>, Wells suggested a custom <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/tables\/conference-tables\/material\/burl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">burl-wood conference table<\/a>. To counter the formality of the client\u2019s own blue <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/seating\/material\/leather\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">leather seating<\/a>, she placed two mid-century <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/designs\/arne-jacobsen-egg-chair\/\">Arne Jacobsen Egg chairs<\/a> by the fireplace. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The lighting includes a single <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/buy\/jean-de-merry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jean de Merry<\/a> Evasion sconce and a chandelier by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/lindsey-adelman\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lindsey Adelman<\/a>. For art, Wells chose a 1965 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/aliceneel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Alice Neel<\/a> portrait, <em>Maynard Stone<\/em>, as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/gerhard-richter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gerhard Richter<\/a>\u2019s 2005 <em>Mustangs<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The key to designing a great library? Struck with a bad case of regret, he called Saporiti. He discovered that none other than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/miuccia-prada\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Miuccia Prada<\/a> had commissioned the design and, by chance, the company had one frame left. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A victorious (and relieved) Santos paired the sofa, upholstered in a snow-white fabric from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/geiger-international\/\">Geiger<\/a>, with Brazilian hardwood chairs by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/sergio-rodrigues\/\">Sergio Rodrigues<\/a>, chosen for their \u201csculptural and human-like\u201d form. To complement the client\u2019s own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/pierre-chapo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pierre Chapo<\/a>\u2013inspired desk, he selected an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/arthur-umanoff\/\">Arthur Umanoff<\/a> chair, which combines style with comfort during long Zoom calls. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To provide warmth as well as light, Santos added an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/designs\/uchiwa-wall-sconce\/\">Ingo Maurer Uchiwa wall sconce<\/a>, which plays off the wood of an existing modular <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/storage-case-pieces\/bookcases\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bookcase<\/a> that he reconfigured for the project. Take the study in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/project\/neoclassical-collection-new-orleans-la\/32743\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">her own New Orleans home<\/a>, where an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/tables\/period\/18th-century-and-earlier\/?origin=italian\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">18th-century Italian table<\/a> turned desk is the focal point. It&#8217;s topped with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/buy\/antique-reliquary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reliquary<\/a> that cleverly hides her computer and is bookended by two <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/lighting\/table-lamps\/material\/marble\/?item-type=new-custom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">contemporary marble lamps<\/a>. Just behind is an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/storage-case-pieces\/secretaires\/origin\/italian\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Italian secretary<\/a> with the original polychrome detailing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/style\/louis-philippe\/\">Louis Philippe<\/a> daybed by the window is often commandeered by Shaw&#8217;s dog, who loves to look outside. MacMurray selected a sepia wallpaper to complement the bespoke hue she created and custom enlarged the pattern to give the room a grander sense of scale. For another pop of sapphire, she covered a set of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/seating\/ottomans-poufs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ottomans<\/a> that double as storage in a kid-friendly blue felt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MacMurray used a corduroy-like fabric from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/jim-thompson\/\">Jim Thompson<\/a> for the custom sofa to create \u201ca play on the vertical lines of the library with the horizontal lines of the furniture\u201d and topped it with pillows in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/fortuny\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fortuny<\/a>\u2019s Moresco pattern. A custom <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/brunschwig-and-fils\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Brunschwig &amp; Fils<\/a> rug echoes the lines in the sofa and wallpaper, as well as their soft earth tones. The trick was so successful that he extended the idea to the leather <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/edward-wormley\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Edward Wormley<\/a> chairs he&#8217;d kept from a previous apartment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kleinberg says the contrasting fabrics on the custom 1940s-inspired pull-out sofa serve to \u201cbreak up the mass\u201d of such a large piece in a small room. Next to it stands a small Swedish <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/tables\/material\/metal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">metalwork table<\/a> the designer likens to a <em>table de malade<\/em>, or overbed table. \u201cYou can swing it over, it tilts, it goes up and down,\u201d he says. \u201cIt&#8217;s quite metamorphic and does a lot of things.\u201d The coffee table is also convertible, in a way. Handling the overflow of titles is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/style\/william-iv\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">William IV<\/a> mahogany trolley, which lives just behind a 1935 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/buy\/campeche-chairs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Campeche chair<\/a>, also made of mahogany and upholstered in Italian horsehair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A pair of easily movable <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/seating\/chairs\/style\/edwardian\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Edwardian chairs<\/a> upholstered in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/en-gb\/buy\/holland-sherry\/\">Holland &amp; Sherry<\/a> men\u2019s suiting fabric sit in front of a set of French doors, while a traditional tufted chesterfield sofa in a light caramel leather is placed against the opposite wall.
