Hommemade<\/a>, the design studio of rapper and style setter A$AP Rocky, has partnered with Italian maker Gufram<\/a> to create the Guframini Shroom CACTUS<\/a>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Creative ideas can come from anyone, and inspiration can be sparked by anything \u2014 including a humble toadstool. At least, design disruptors Charley Vezza and A$AP Rocky seem to think so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vezza, longtime creative director of celebrated Italian furniture maker Gufram<\/a> (and now CEO of its aptly named parent company, Italian Radical Design), tapped multi-hyphenate artist A$AP Rocky and his design studio, Hommemade, to reimagine Gufram\u2019s iconic CACTUS hall tree<\/a>, originally created by Guido Drocco and Franco Mello<\/a> in 1972. The result: a dreamy version of the OG featuring hand-painted mushrooms sprouting from its base. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The pair unveiled the Shroom CACTUS at Design Miami in December. Now, they\u2019ve released a miniature version in a limited edition of 99, available exclusively on 1stDibs. The mini painstakingly replicates the full-size piece at a one-to-eight scale, making it the perfect size for desks and bookshelves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA cartoon-like dream that you have after enjoying hallucinogens,\u201d is how Vezza describes the piece, speaking from Gufram\u2019s headquarters in Barolo, Italy. Its allusion to magical fungi didn’t surprise him. \u201cI knew that Rocky was advocating for mushrooms in the U.S., so I was expecting something like that.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEverything starts with passion,\u201d he says of the partnership. \u201cRocky is a passionate Gufram collector \u2014 we didn\u2019t know that. He was buying through 1stDibs.\u201d Their mutual appreciation made their collaboration feel genuine and easy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gufram was founded in Turin in 1966, at the dawn of Italy\u2019s Radical design movement<\/a>. Many architects, designers and students at the time were critical of modernism<\/a> and subverted its norms with experimentation that was playful, ironic and colorful<\/a>. A number of Gufram pieces have become emblems of postmodern<\/a> style, including the Pratone chaise<\/a> and Bocca sofa<\/a>, both of which are also available in miniature<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n

Given the brand\u2019s history, it makes sense that Vezza would seek out fresh ideas from unconventional thinkers. \u201cGufram has always been very open to any kind of creativity,\u201d he says. \u201cThere have been chairs designed by a mathematician. There was a chair by a graphic designer in the \u201970s, when these kinds of collaborations were not as usual as they are today.\u201d Everyone brings their own perspective to the world of Gufram, and that’s the point. About the Guframini Shroom CACTUS, Vezza declares: \u201cIt\u2019s very Rocky.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t
