Peter Mikic<\/a> designed a custom sofa with plenty of curves to soften the squareness of the kitchen\/sitting room in his home in Oxfordshire, to the northwest of London. Then, to balance what he calls the \u201cundulating\u201d waves of the sofa and play off the black fireplace, he added two mid-century modern<\/a> Swedish chairs found on 1stDibs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For lighting, he chose a Serge Mouille<\/a> lamp, while on the floor, he laid a custom rug with four different colors and pile heights that echoes the lines of the warm wood paneling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe whole idea was the room that Renzo Mongiardino<\/a> did for Lee Radziwill,\u201d <\/strong>Charlotte Barnes<\/a> says of the cozy den she designed in her home. To get the look, Barnes clad the fireplace wall in Penny Morrison\u2019s Jamawar fabric, then framed the television with rattan and mirrored candleholders. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI have a red alert for anything \u2018antler<\/a>\u2019 from 1stDibs,\u201d says the designer, explaining the horned items just above the TV, a mix of faux and genuine. \u201cThe guy in the center is just a wonderful old, wood-carved deer,\u201d she confesses. Real or not, they can be gazed at from the well-loved George Spencer club chairs she\u2019s reupholstered \u201ca thousand times!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For a \u201cGatsby-era house\u201d in Westchester, New York, designer David Kleinberg<\/a> selected two pieces from the first half of the 20th century, both found on 1stDibs. One, a two-tiered Maison Jansen<\/a> cocktail table thought to have been designed sometime in the 1940s, is made of iron and glass with stunning polished-brass details. The other, a French Art Deco<\/a>\u2013era side table, sits near the sofa. You can almost imagine rings on its surface left by a gin-rickey glass, holding Gatsby\u2019s favorite drink.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Playing off the bar\u2019s arch, the designers built a custom curved sofa they say \u201cengulfs the room.\u201d Above it hangs a light fixture by Aqua Creations<\/a>, chosen in large part for its scale. Pulling the whole look together is an Art Deco<\/a> rug by Doris Leslie Blau<\/a> with a \u201cunique angular pattern\u201d that contrasts with the room\u2019s undulating lines. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Should they choose to, the family can turn off the antique brass gallery lights and cozy around a roaring fire framed by the antique French farmhouse mantel from Pittet<\/a>, a 1stDibs find. It’s the perfect way to savor a space Brent describes as \u201crooted in the intimacy of connection.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe wanted it to be kind of monolithic,\u201d Yellow House Architects<\/a> founder Elizabeth Graziolo says of the \u201cvery long, generous, comfortable sofa\u201d in the den she designed for a famed Art Deco<\/a> building in Manhattan. To instill a sense of softness, she upholstered the piece in a caramel-colored mohair fabric from Schumacher<\/a> and clad the walls in a suede wallpaper from Phillip Jeffries<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For texture and a dash of excitement, Graziolo added playful zebra-hide-covered pillows<\/a> from FORSYTH<\/a> that she found on 1stDibs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Steven Gambrel<\/a> used texture to provide \u201cwarmth and complexity\u201d in the work\/dining space of a 19th-century townhouse. Indeed, whether it\u2019s the subtle mix of textiles on the Trocadero chairs from Roche Bobois<\/a>, the contrasting surfaces of the graceful travertine Osvaldo Borsani<\/a> table or the cleverly layered rugs, the blending of materials is exciting. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If the surfaces vary, the elegance is consistent, as exemplified by the pairing of a 1930 Swedish Grace pedestal desk attributed to Carl Malmsten<\/a> for Bodafors<\/a> with a brace of Jean Pascaud<\/a> chairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For \u201ca little jewel box of a space that feels cozy and well appointed,\u201d designer Zoe Feldman<\/a> <\/strong>used a sectional sofa from Holly Hunt<\/a> that \u201cwraps the room and offers a soft landing at any spot.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

She paired that with a burl-wood waterfall coffee table from 1stDibs and a classic Mies van der Rohe Barcelona chair<\/a> for \u201can iconic moment<\/a>.\u201d Also from 1stDibs is a 1970s pencil-reed rattan side table<\/a> that contributes a contrasting texture. Why the seemingly disparate periods and materials? \u201cI really believe that all good design has an element of tension to it,\u201d Feldman says.<\/p>\n\n\n\t
