Mexican designer Andr\u00e9s Monnier<\/a> carved the Baptiz rock bathtub<\/a> from a single block of marble.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n

Bathtubs<\/a> occupy a particular place among furniture. One may fleetingly touch a cabinet<\/a> or recline for a while in a chair<\/a>. But full bodily immersion \u2014 with one\u2019s skin in contact with the water and the contours of the tub \u2014 is essential to a bathing ritual. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the design of such a tactile object, the material is key to delivering an optimal experience. That perhaps explains why Andr\u00e9s Monnier<\/a>\u2019s Baptiz rock bathtub<\/a> is so alluring. The rough-hewn stone basin conveys a connection with the natural world and a promise of corporal and spiritual rejuvenation in sync with the holy rite of the work\u2019s title. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The hefty piece is rendered from a massive block of Portoro marble sourced from the Dominican Republic. Created during Monnier’s second residency with Santo Domingo\u2019s Marmotech Design Center, it was included in \u201cMontesino,\u201d an exhibition of work by Latin American artists presented by the Geneva-based Galerie Philia<\/a> <\/em>during Design Week Rep\u00fablica Dominicana in March.<\/p>\n\n\n

Although the original piece is made from black Portoro marble, the design can be commissioned in white or gray marble or another material, such as travertine, basalt, granite, onyx or obsidian.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n

Monnier, now 24, grew up in Guadalajara, Mexico. After graduating from Universidad Aut\u00f3noma de Baja California with an engineering degree, he started out creating fire pits and slowly transitioned to making other pieces in materials such as marble and limestone. In his Baja California studio, he handcrafts furniture that pays homage to the materials\u2019 traditional association with monumental sculpture. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAndr\u00e9s pays attention to the vibrations, personalities and chromatic details of every different type of stone he works with,\u201d says Galerie Philia owner Yga\u00ebl Attali, who is including a new Monnier fire pit in \u201cDesacralized,\u201d the gallery’s Milan Design Week exhibition in a deconsecrated church in the city\u2019s central district. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

From a plinth-like daybed<\/a> to a haunting candelabra<\/a>, Monnier\u2019s dramatic creations combine the commanding weight of the stone with a mysterious gentleness. In the Baptiz tub, the rock and the water invite us to reconnect with the elements and ourselves. <\/p>\n\n\n\t
