Elegant, lustrous pearls<\/a> are perennially chic, whether in a classic single strand<\/a> for daytime or ropes upon ropes layered for an evening affair like the 2023 Met Gala. Less common, but equally welcome in either scenario, are pearl cocktail rings. And this one<\/a> \u2014 by Westport, Connecticut, designer Faye Kim<\/a>, featuring a golden South Sea pearl<\/a> \u2014 offers a sophisticated take on the shimmering gem that\u2019s miles away from ordinary. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The South Sea pearl is a variety harvested from the saltwater oyster known as the Pinctada maxima<\/em> and highly prized for its size. This example is about a half inch in diameter, giving it a pronounced profile on the finger, with a champagne hue that qualifies it as \u201cgolden.\u201d Golden South Sea pearls are particularly sought after, especially those cultured off the northwest coast of Australia, like this one. Mounted in a simple design of 18-karat gold and accented with diamonds, the gem is the undeniable star of the show here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFor golden South Sea pearls, the color must fall into the \u2018gold\u2019 category, with a rich depth of color that ordinary \u2018yellow\u2019 pearls just don\u2019t have,\u201d explains Kim, who launched her brand in 2003 and is known for geometric, architectural pieces centering lush stones. Kim works with emeralds<\/a>, sapphires<\/a> and diamonds<\/a>, among many other gems, but she has a particular affinity for pearls. \u201cEach is one of a kind, made by nature<\/a>,\u201d she says. \u201cAs a designer, I find the many colors, shapes and sizes<\/a> very inspiring and essential to my creative process.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The connection is deeply personal. \u201cThe very first gift I received as a child was a pearl ring from my uncle who lived in Japan,\u201d says Kim. Notably, she began her jewelry career in the pearl-buying office of Tiffany & Co.<\/a>, where she \u201chad the best training, with hands-on experience that helped me develop a keen eye for quality.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, when selecting pearls, \u201cI look for a balance between all the attributes \u2014 shape, luster, skin or surface blemishes and iridescence,\u201d says Kim. \u201cAll things being equal, the larger sizes are superior and the most valuable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cToday,\u201d she continues, \u201ca classic design with an oversize, deep golden pearl is bold and elegant \u2014 a fashion statement.\u201d We couldn\u2019t agree more.<\/p>\n\n\n\t
