By torching a reissued Charles Rennie Mackintosh<\/a> design (left), Maarten Baas<\/a> created his Hill House I chair<\/a>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

In the early 2000s, Maarten Baas<\/a>, a young Dutch artist-provocateur working on his graduation project at the prestigious Design Academy Eindhoven, took a reproduction of a tall ladder-back Hill House chair<\/a> originally created in 1888 by pioneering Scottish modernist Charles Rennie Mackintosh<\/a> and set it aflame. Then, he preserved the chair\u2019s blackened skeleton with clear epoxy resin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For his audacious U.S. debut exhibition, \u201cWhere There\u2019s Smoke,\u201d at Murray Moss gallery<\/a> in Manhattan’s SoHo neighborhood in 2004, Baas showed the Hill House chair alongside more than 20 other burned reproductions of modern<\/a> design classics by the likes of Charles and Ray Eames<\/a>, Antoni Gaud\u00ed<\/a>, Gerrit Rietveld<\/a> and Ettore Sottsass<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dennis Freedman, a creative director at the time for W<\/em> magazine and later for Barneys New York, was then a few years into an all-consuming design-collecting habit<\/a> and stopped by the gallery the day before the show opened. \u201cI was immediately drawn to the Hill House I chair,\u201d Freedman recalls. \u201cI think it\u2019s the most haunting piece in the series, with a delicacy and fragility further intensified by its charred state.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

Baas\u2019s scorched Hill House I chair, with its (unburned) apple-green raw-silk and wool upholstered seat, is among more than 50 examples from Freedman\u2019s acclaimed collection currently on view at the Tribeca gallery R & Company<\/a> through August 11. Alongside it are important and rare works by such design giants as Gae Aulenti<\/a>, the Campana Brothers<\/a>, Pierre Paulin<\/a>, Shiro Kuramata<\/a> and Joris Laarman<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe idea of the exhibition, in a way, is to teach people how to collect,\u201d says gallery cofounder Evan Snyderman. \u201cIt feels like you\u2019re walking through someone\u2019s mind.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And through the history of design that Baas was so engaged with. Original chairs in the show by Rietveld and Gaud\u00ed are the same iconic designs that Baas transformed in his \u201cSmoke\u201d series, for example, and the material subversion and blackened surface of Hill House I echoes Alessandro Mendini<\/a>\u2019s Celidonia armchair, which looks like patinated bronze but is actually painted wood and fabric.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Freedman sees a direct link between Baas\u2019s fiery experimentation and a 1974 performance piece for which Mendini set ablaze two identical chairs of his own design in front of the offices of Casabella<\/em>, the influential Milanese design magazine. \u201cIt succeeded in blurring the line between art and design,\u201d he notes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Baas did the same with his \u201cSmoke\u201d series, says Snyderman. \u201cIt was very radical. Baas chose famous design icons of the 20th century and burned them all. He was making a statement. He was burning modernism down.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In doing so, he created his own legacy. The Hill House I chair was \u201can act of transformation, of alchemy,\u201d says Freedman, explaining that Baas took \u201ca worthless reproduction of a seminal object and turned it into a brilliant new work.\u201d One that will endure, Snyderman believes. \u201cIt is a very significant work. You\u2019ll see it in the history books.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t
