\u201cI\u2019m all for beauty, but I\u2019m also very practical,\u201d says the New York\u2013based designer Sandra Nunnerley<\/a>, who creates elegant, tailored and often contemporary-art-focused residences<\/a> for clients in Aspen, Hong Kong, Manhattan, Southampton<\/a> and beyond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nunnerley could be referring to her luxe-but-livable interiors, but at the moment she\u2019s talking about the Nova console<\/a>, the latest addition to her Celestial Collection of occasional tables<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before the New Zealand\u2013born Nunnerley launched her eponymous studio, in 1988, she studied both architecture and design. So, it\u2019s not surprising that striking the right balance between form and function informed her decision to use versatile, lightweight Corian<\/a> for her line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI wanted something with the gravity and feel of marble,\u201d she says of the material, \u201cbut without the actual weight so that it could be moved around to suit a variety of needs. Plus, it\u2019s wipeable!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

Nunnerley is constantly \u201con the hunt\u201d for occasional tables for clients, so \u201cit was wonderful to make something I\u2019d want to use myself,\u201d she says of her astronomy-inspired collection, which debuted in 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Produced in partnership with New York gallery Maison Gerard<\/a>, the sculptural tables, of varying heights and circumferences, feature laser-cut bronze inlays of stylized starbursts, abstracted suns and moons and geometric shapes, which add decorative richness to the utilitarian Corian<\/a>, often used for kitchen and bathroom countertops and as a durable material for furnishings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Manhattan gallery is known as a go-to source for French Art Deco<\/a> treasures by Jean-Michel Frank<\/a>, Jules Leleu<\/a> and \u00c9mile-Jacques Ruhlmann<\/a>, as well as for contemporary pieces born of partnerships with designers like Nunnerley, Georgis & Mirgorodsky<\/a>, Achille Salvagni<\/a> and Herv\u00e9 Van der Straeten<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is great to work with someone who not only understands the history of decorative arts but also current tastes\u201d Drut adds. \u201cSandra is in the field, so she knows what activates contemporary spaces.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Nova joins the Eclipse<\/a>, Solaris<\/a> and Luna<\/a> side tables and, at nearly four and a half feet long, is the collection\u2019s most monumental offering to date. Available in both black and off-white, it is composed of a slender, elongated oval top resting on a flared pedestal base that evokes the expanding and contracting forces of its namesake\u2019s evolution. (There\u2019s also a smaller, coffee-table version called the Aurora that mimics the Nova\u2019s graceful lines.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the Nova, Nunnerley deployed the bronze inlay in simple, glimmering threads that run along the edge of the top and the bottom of the base. \u201cAn 18th-century French fine cabinetmaker would have done similarly, by inserting decorative metal into a fine wooden surface,” says Drut. He adds that the result here is a table that feels \u201csensual, refined and timeless.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\t
