It\u2019s been more than 60 years since Mattel presented Barbie<\/a> \u2014 and the world \u2014 with her first-ever Dreamhouse, a folding-cardboard dorm-style room done up in fuchsia tones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With Greta Gerwig\u2019s live-action Barbie<\/em> movie<\/a>, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, set to open July 21, 1stDibs thought it the perfect time to dream up a different sort of Dreamhouse, composed of 13 rooms where anyone who loves glamour \u2014 including a certain long-limbed, blonde-tressed doll with a penchant for pink \u2014 could feel gloriously at home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the dining room of a terraced penthouse apartment<\/a> on New York\u2019s Sutton Place, the sunlight that pours in through French doors highlights the bubble-gum-hued Gucci<\/a> wallpaper, thrumming with a siege of large-scale herons and dragonflies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Six 19th-century Louis XV<\/a>\u2013style dining chairs gathered around the circular table display silver-threaded dragonflies on their upholstered backs, \u201cto draw the details of the wallpaper out into the middle of the room,\u201d says Courtney Coleman, one half of the New Orleans and New York design firm Brockschmidt & Coleman<\/a>, who conceived the space. (Like the 1940s Maison Bagu\u00e8s<\/a> chandelier overhead \u2014 in gilt and lacquered bronze, replete with pearls and crystal pendants \u2014 the chairs were purchased on 1stDibs.) <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bill Brockschmidt adds, \u201cWe countered the strong color of the walls and curtains with trace accents of black in the dining-chair upholstery, the neoclassical<\/a> urns from Bardith<\/a> and the marble-topped sideboard, which came from the collection of the client, a woman who divides her time among New York, Florida and Massachusetts.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

While Barbie was nowhere on the duo\u2019s mind during the design process, Coleman admits that she was an early inspiration. \u201cGrowing up, my best friend and I created sensational houses for our Barbies with swatches of French damask fabric cadged from a family decorator and dramatic dining rooms where the china was custom-painted and the champagne \u2014 aka Sprite \u2014 was free-flowing!\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although the first Barbie Dreamhouse had no kitchen (a radical omission, considering that dollhouses were meant to enchant young girls with the idea of domestic labor), it\u2019s easy to imagine Barbie, her sister Skipper and her best friend, Midge, perched in a leggy row atop the trio of David Larsen Studio stools that line a blond-wood kitchen island in an apartment in New York\u2019s Chelsea neighborhood<\/a>. The home in fact belongs to a couple with three children who asked New York\u2013based firm Le Whit<\/a> for help with a remodel after they acquired the neighboring unit. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe clients chose the stove years before we were tapped to renovate the space,\u201d says firm principal Liza Curtiss, explaining that she and partner Corey Kingston worked to incorporate Suzanne Kasler<\/a>\u2019s distinctively pink La Cornue stove into their design. \u201cWe wanted it to stand out without sticking out, so we chose all the finishes with care.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fashion-designer wife had always been fascinated by the curves and whimsy of Antoni Gaud\u00ed<\/a>\u2019s architecture, which influenced their approach as well. \u201cThe recessed arch that surrounds the appliance, the vibrant striated arc of the backsplash stone and the pill-shaped curves of the island enhance the playful quality of the oven and downplay its utility.\u201d Also stylish and useful: the black metal Triple Kick light<\/a> by Volker Haug<\/a>, which was sourced on 1stDibs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOrchid pink is one of my favorite shades,\u201d Liz Caan<\/a> says of the buoyant Raoul Textiles Amore wallpaper she chose for the living room of a 1923 Georgian Colonial<\/a> in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts. \u201cSince it’s a patterned paper and not a solid painted wall, it feels like the perfect bridge \u2014 it enhances the space and makes it feel upbeat and cheerful.\u201d Pointing to the 1770s English side chairs<\/a>, the circa 1890 Liberty & Co.<\/a> Thebes stool and the 18th-century mahogany secretary<\/a> she used as a bar, the Newton, Massachusetts\u2013based designer notes that the wallcovering \u201calso makes the darker, brown antique pieces feel current and relevant.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Caan tempered the pink by dyeing the floors a rich matte ebony and hanging generous folds of army-green drapery. Animal-skin rugs and a panoply of throw pillows<\/a> add to the room\u2019s texture. \u201cLayering patterns gives the room a feeling of imperfection and harmony at the same time,\u201d she says. It’s a strategy well suited to the homeowners, a family of five with two large Samoyeds who should probably not be allowed up on the celadon blue sofa. Barbie, with a golden retriever named Taffy, can likely relate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mary McDonald<\/a>\u2019s former home office, on the top-floor of a 1925 Beverly Hills manse<\/a> once owned by philanthropist Harvey Mudd, offers a traditional take on study decor<\/a> with a colorful twist. \u201cI needed this room as my \u2018she space,\u2019\u201d explains McDonald, \u201cso it had a desk and collections of things I loved: old portraits by family members, somewhere to lounge and bits and baubles from years of collecting my favorite things. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut it needed a little hip definition to cut the granny fans and porcelain<\/a>,\u201d she continues. \u201cAnd since I simply love pink, I used it as a foil against the brown for pop and zip, pulling out the tone from one of my favorite Rose Cumming<\/a> bird chintz fabrics.\u201d Flashes of turquoise throughout the room \u2014 as on the antique Chinese porcelain lamps<\/a>, the classic Chinese garden stool and the simple milk-glass<\/a> urn \u2014 inject additional zing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the upcoming movie\u2019s production designer, Sarah Greenwood, saturated Barbie\u2019s on-screen bedroom in the doll’s signature magenta pink<\/a> (Pantone #e0218a), the hue is a little strident for an actual bedroom, says Chicago-based Summer Thornton<\/a>, who used quieter tea-rose pinks for the curtains, bedding and decorative accents in the bedroom of a Lake Shore Drive apartment<\/a>. (She also eschewed the film\u2019s heart-shaped bed with its sequined cover.) <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe owner is an artist and collector who loves color, so we designed a space where she could embrace it,\u201d says Thornton, adding, \u201cI love when we can be unapologetically feminine.\u201d By upholstering the curly-bracket-shaped curves of the headboard on the Bunny Williams Home<\/a> bed in a brilliant red fabric, Thornton turned an otherwise classic form into a subtle play on lips. She rounded out the ensemble with a tubular tufted lounger, a crystal-and-gold pendant light<\/a> and Mark Shaw<\/a>\u2019s 1957 photo Orange Scarf on Beach at Trouville<\/a><\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI remember using my mother\u2019s Murano glass dish<\/a> as a swimming pool for my Barbie house,\u201d Deborah Walker<\/a> says with a laugh. \u201cIt was chic!\u201d Also chic is the Dallas designer\u2019s custom bed, hanging from golden links in a teenager’s bedroom in the city’s Highland Park suburb<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe client wanted pink,\u201d says Walker. \u201cSo, we used it to define the space \u2014 outlining the walls, creating a hand-painted ceiling medallion and framing the windows in matching drapery.\u201d The Made Goods<\/a> Carmen chandelier, crafted from natural cocowood beads, casts a playful light on John Robshaw\u2019s distinctive floral bedding, which Walker says was a big inspiration here. \u201cIt really helped drive the tone and character of the murals.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s possible Barbie and I operate on a similar wavelength,\u201d jokes Greg Natale<\/a> regarding his approach to a 4,000-square-foot penthouse<\/a> in the Toorak suburb of Melbourne, Australia, where 1980s Dynasty<\/em> glamour is the actual cultural reference. The owners, a stylish young couple with a toddler who run a luxury-watch and jewelry business, have an affinity for pink and encouraged Natale to saturate the home in everything from soft blush to full-throated magenta. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The dressing room was meant to feel like a jewel box. \u201cI love to set an evocative mood and imbue a space with drama, romance and a heightened sense of storytelling,\u201d says Natale, explaining his choice of Calacatta Viola marble for the countertop and Dulux\u2019s Naked Lady paint for the walls. Jonathan Adler<\/a>\u2019s Goldfinger chair<\/a> is pulled up to the vanity, which is accessorized with a Chanel Classic flap bag<\/a>. \u201cThe dressing room has the ultra-exclusive air of a movie star\u2019s inner sanctum,\u201d says the Melbourne native. \u201cMy clients aren\u2019t interested in beige.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo quiet luxury<\/a> here \u2014 my earliest design influences were Barbie and Fran Drescher!\u201d Brooklyn-based Tara McCauley<\/a> says of her aesthetic. \u201cBarbie definitely helped me develop my storytelling muscle. As a designer, my focus is always on visually conveying a specific narrative through a space.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When McCauley was asked to design the primary bedroom<\/a> in a Greek Revival<\/a> townhouse for the Brooklyn Heights Designer Showhouse<\/a> last fall, she conjured Elsa Schiaparelli<\/a> as her client. \u201cHer signature color was Shocking Pink<\/a>, so I transformed the room\u2019s walk-in closet into a fantasy dressing room of sorts, where art and fashion could coexist. I wanted the space to exude glamour and joy.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

To that end, says McCauley, \u201cI had the ceiling painted hot pink to cast a rosy glow throughout, used Clarence House<\/a> silk satins for the curtains and incorporated playful elements like ostrich feathers.\u201d Vintage Schiaparelli perfume ads from McCauley’s own collection (a gift from designer Harry Heissmann<\/a>) line the walls. The pair of hand-painted marble-pattern obelisks are by South Carolina artist Thomas Engelhart; vintage fashions by Todd Oldham<\/a>, Moschino<\/a> and Henri Bendel<\/a>, on loan from McCauley\u2019s closet, hang below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis was meant to be a space for daydreams and imagination,\u201d says Daun Curry<\/a>, describing the idea behind the pastel pink-and-blue staircase and cubbyhole decor of a child\u2019s bedroom in a Sag Harbor, New York, vacation home<\/a>. The New York City\u2013based Curry, who had previously designed the family\u2019s Fifth Avenue apartment, deployed Tom Dixon<\/a>\u2019s Melt LED pendant lights<\/a> and a Ron Arad<\/a> for Moroso<\/a> Soft Heart rocking chair (all found on 1stDibs) as key elements in what she calls the room\u2019s \u201cexperiential decor.\u201d Ironically, says Curry, her own childhood experiences were the polar opposite: \u201cI was a wood-toy Waldorf School kid myself.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adam Hunter<\/a> was a Broadway actor (appearing in Les Mis\u00e9rables<\/em>, Ragtime<\/em> and Baz Luhrmann\u2019s production of La Boh\u00e8me<\/em>) before turning to interior design<\/a>, so he knows a thing or two about creating drama in a room. The designer, now based in L.A., also knows a thing or two about pink, and not just because unabashed Barbie acolyte Paris Hilton is a client. \u201cBarbie’s bold aesthetic<\/a> resonates with many designers, including me,\u201d he says. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the screening room of a young couple\u2019s Brentwood home<\/a>, theatricality is on full display. \u201cWe made sure to strike a balance between the dominant pink tones and contrasting elements like metallic accents [including Art Deco<\/a>\u2013inspired sconces] and rich textures.\u201d (Marlon Brando<\/a> and Vivien Leigh<\/a>, seen here in A Streetcar Named Desire,<\/em> might cede screen time to Robbie and Gosling.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Demi Lovato\u2019s Los Angeles patio is a Dreamhouse moment come to life. Even the electric-green grass outlining the flagstones seems to be in on the vibe. The space is outside the singer-songwriter\u2019s Studio City farmhouse<\/a>, created by Argyle Design<\/a>\u2019s Kat Bell and James Drew<\/a>, who worked closely with her on the project. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the patio lies just beyond the magenta and hunter green \u201cglam room<\/a>\u201d where Lovato dresses for events, and the entertainer and her team often use the alfresco seating area to take breaks while they prep, Bell says she made sure the transition from indoor to outdoors felt organic by \u201cbringing the palette of the interior to the exterior but in a softer way.\u201d Faye Toogood<\/a>\u2019s iconic, flesh-colored Roly-Poly armchairs<\/a>, found on 1stDibs, play a starring role. \u201cThey have a ton of personality,\u201d says Bell. \u201cAnd we love incorporating furnishings that are functional but also whimsical.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s hard to believe that Exhibition<\/a>, Frampton Co<\/a>\u2019s workspace and gallery in Bridgehampton, New York<\/a>, is housed in an early-20th-century former agricultural workshop and wasn’t born a disco. That\u2019s in large part thanks to the dazzling wraparound silk-screened and hand-painted paneling created by artist Elise Ferguson, which is \u201ccomposed of a subtle gradient of five pink tones,\u201d according to Frampton Co founder Elena Frampton. Set against this vibrant backdrop are such iconic pieces as Johnny Swing<\/a>\u2019s amoeba-like Murmuration bench (composed of welded quarters) and Wendell Castle<\/a>\u2019s arched fiberglass Pinkie floor lamp, as well as a sofa, desk and rug of Frampton\u2019s own design. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the New Canaan, Connecticut, residence<\/a> of a fashion blogger and entrepreneur, the color for the walls of the home office was \u201cinspired by the skin tone of a Barbie doll,\u201d says Houston-based Lucinda Loya<\/a>. \u201cThis led us to the shade we went with \u2014 Yves Saint Laurent<\/a>\u2019s Nude Transparent 123 lipstick. When it comes to pink, I prefer warmer, muted tones that exist at the junction of playful and sophisticated.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because the office was adjacent to the home\u2019s primary bedroom, Loya \u201cfelt it was necessary to give the room some edge and incorporate geometric lines, contemporary art and unexpected details.\u201d The hand-painted chandelier is by Fortuny<\/a>, the print on the fireplace mantel is by Alexander McQueen<\/a>, and the crocheted Karletto Giga and Coco Giga dolls are by House of Mua Mua. <\/p>\n\n\n

\u201cBarbie is my alter ego,\u201d Loya says, on more a personal note. \u201cI learned and dreamed about fashion through her expansive world, though I never had my very own \u2014 only hand-me-downs with missing limbs.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
