Animal-skin rugs and a panoply of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/more-furniture-collectibles\/textiles\/pillows-throws\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">throw pillows<\/a> add to the room\u2019s texture. \u201cLayering patterns gives the room a feeling of imperfection and harmony at the same time,\u201d she says. It&#8217;s a strategy well suited to the homeowners, a family of five with two large Samoyeds who should probably not be allowed up on the celadon blue sofa. Barbie, with a golden retriever named Taffy, can likely relate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1925 Beverly Hills manse<\/a> once owned by philanthropist Harvey Mudd, offers a traditional take on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/handsome-libraries-and-studies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">study decor<\/a> with a colorful twist. \u201cI needed this room as my \u2018she space,\u2019\u201d explains McDonald, \u201cso it had a desk and collections of things I loved: old portraits by family members, somewhere to lounge and bits and baubles from years of collecting my favorite things. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut it needed a little hip definition to cut the granny fans and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/material\/porcelain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">porcelain<\/a>,\u201d she continues. \u201cAnd since I simply love pink, I used it as a foil against the brown for pop and zip, pulling out the tone from one of my favorite <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/rose-cumming\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rose Cumming<\/a> bird chintz fabrics.\u201d Flashes of turquoise throughout the room \u2014 as on the antique <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/buy\/antique-chinese-porcelain-lamps\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Chinese porcelain lamps<\/a>, the classic Chinese garden stool and the simple <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/material\/milk-glass\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">milk-glass<\/a> urn \u2014 inject additional zing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img bedroom in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.architecturaldigest.com\/story\/inside-the-barbie-dreamhouse-a-fuchsia-fantasy-inspired-by-palm-springs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the doll&#8217;s signature magenta pink<\/a> (Pantone #e0218a), the hue is a little strident for an actual bedroom, says Chicago-based <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/design-firms\/summer-thornton-design\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Summer Thornton<\/a>, who used quieter tea-rose pinks for the curtains, bedding and decorative accents in the bedroom of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/project\/lake-shore-drive-co-op-chicago-il\/126051\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lake Shore Drive apartment<\/a>. (She also eschewed the film\u2019s heart-shaped bed with its sequined cover.) <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe owner is an artist and collector who loves color, so we designed a space where she could embrace it,\u201d says Thornton, adding, \u201cI love when we can be unapologetically feminine.\u201d By upholstering the curly-bracket-shaped curves of the headboard on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/dealers\/bunny-williams-home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bunny Williams Home<\/a> bed in a brilliant red fabric, Thornton turned an otherwise classic form into a subtle play on lips. She rounded out the ensemble with a tubular tufted lounger, a crystal-and-gold <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/lighting\/chandeliers-pendant-lights\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pendant light<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/mark-shaw\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mark Shaw<\/a>\u2019s 1957 photo <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/art\/photography\/color-photography\/mark-shaw-orange-scarf-on-beach-at-trouville-1957\/id-a_4006691\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Orange Scarf on <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe client wanted pink,\u201d says Walker. \u201cSo, we used it to define the space \u2014 outlining the walls, creating a hand-painted ceiling medallion and framing the windows As a designer, my focus is always on visually conveying a specific narrative through a space.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When McCauley was asked to design the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/project\/brooklyn-designer-showhouse-2022-brooklyn-ny\/289792\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">primary bedroom<\/a> in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/style\/greek-revival\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Greek Revival<\/a> townhouse for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/introspective-magazine\/brooklyn-heights-designer-showhouse-2022\/\">the Brooklyn Heights Designer Showhouse<\/a> last fall, she conjured <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/elsa-schiaparelli\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Elsa Schiaparelli<\/a> as her client. \u201cHer signature color was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/introspective-magazine\/elsa-schiaparelli-book-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Shocking Pink<\/a>, so I transformed the room\u2019s walk-in closet into a fantasy dressing room of sorts, where art and fashion could coexist. I wanted the space to exude glamour and joy.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To that end, says McCauley, \u201cI had the ceiling painted hot pink to cast a rosy glow throughout, used <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/clarence-house\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Clarence House<\/a> silk satins for the curtains and incorporated playful elements like ostrich feathers.\u201d Vintage Schiaparelli perfume ads from McCauley&#8217;s own collection (a gift from designer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/design-firms\/harry-heissmann-inc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Harry Heissmann<\/a>) line the walls.
