From early Pop masterpieces to Banksy<\/a>-propagated Pop graffiti, British artist Patrick Hughes<\/a> takes us on a whirlwind journey through the annals of Pop art<\/a> in his illusionistic 3D painting Her Eyes on the Horizon<\/em><\/a> (2021). He begins with the classics<\/a>: meandering from Andy Warhol<\/a>, Jasper Johns<\/a> and Roy Lichtenstein<\/a> to Niki de Saint Phalle<\/a>, Keith Haring<\/a> and Damien Hirst<\/a> to the ongoing notorious appropriationist and defiler Bansky. It\u2019s a wonder-filled trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Which doesn\u2019t mean Hughes doesn\u2019t also acknowledge the farther past, turning it inside out with the likes of an 1890 portrait by the French painter Paul Signac<\/a>. Here, the French Neo-Impressionist<\/a> depicted, as Hughes tells us convolutedly, \u201cthe anarchist writer Felix Feneon, the author of Novels in Three Lines<\/em> \u2014 who did not like the painting! \u2014 in front of a circus-like set of motifs.\u201d This tactic, he notes, as he demonstrates his thinking, \u201cis an early example of painting popular art in high art.\u201d There\u2019s no beginning and no end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hughes, who had his first show in 1961, continues to elaborate and allow his paintings to perform. Her Eyes on the Horizon<\/em> is currently on view in \u201cThe Newest Perspectives<\/a>,\u201d Hughes\u2019s solo show at London gallery Alon Zakaim Fine Art<\/a> through September 8. The artist describes it all this way: \u201cThe whole painting, the whole show, including some Solid Hollows I have made, like dice, a Rubik\u2019s Cube, a solid sky, a Louis Vuitton trunk<\/a>\u201d are active shapes that have \u201cescaped from paintings and taken on a life of their own.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some of the miniature artworks found in Her Eyes on the Horizon<\/em>\u2019s imaginary exhibition set on a surreal seashore are not immediately identifiable as Pop. Or so we think.<\/p>\n\n\n

Generously demystifying the nature of his painting, Hughes says, \u201cI included Vasarely<\/a>, whose Op art<\/a> was designed to be popular<\/a>, as was Wayne Thiebaud<\/a>\u2019s lady\u2019s shoes, Keith Haring\u2019s subway . . . and Hirst and Koons<\/a> with the shark biting on the balloon dog<\/a>, Niki de Saint Phalle embracing the play of bodies on the beach. Lichtenstein\u2019s wit about the gestural marks of the Abstract Expressionists<\/a> being seen as a sign that could be constructed in drawn lines and benday dots is one of the various strategies that artists have used to include the quotidian, the cheap, the overlooked to communicate directly to the audience without the need for explication, which I am explaining in Her Eyes on the Horizon<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t
