A rare find, Oliver Goldsmith<\/a>\u2019s alluring Yuhu wraparound frames<\/a> are the pinnacle of avant-garde eyewear, as radical today as they were when they were produced, in the 1960s. A design famously worn by Audrey Hepburn<\/a> on the poster for Stanley Donen\u2019s 1967 film Two for the Road<\/em>, these supermodern sunglasses<\/a> capture the moment eyewear exploded as a fashion accessory. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, Hollywood had always embraced chic, dark-lensed glasses as protection from the blazing Los Angeles sun and photographers\u2019 flashbulbs. By the 1920s and \u201930s, the eyewear had hit the mass market, and film fans and fashionistas alike were enthusiastically emulating their idols. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWearing the same sunglasses model as your favorite actor or character brings you closer to that silver-screen dream,\u201d says eyewear collector Jantie Vis, who\u2019s offering a 1966 pair of the sleek frames<\/a> through his shop, Nightwings<\/a>, on 1stDibs. \u201cYou can put on your vintage Oliver Goldsmith sunglasses, hail a cab in New York City and have an Audrey Hepburn moment<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 1960s<\/a> was a time of revolution in eyewear. The introduction of new materials and innovative molding methods launched a design era dominated by supersize sunglasses and fantastical, curvaceous forms. Eyewear had become art.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Initially developed as protective gear for drivers and sportsmen, wraparound sunglasses<\/a> encompassed a range of 1960s fashion<\/a> obsessions: speed, futurism, jet-setting, the power of plastic. On Hepburn\u2019s beautiful face, the sleek white Yuhu became the<\/em> signifier of luxe leisure. <\/p>\n\n\n

A research associate at The Costume Institute at The Metropolitan Museum of Art for more than a decade, she developed public programming for exhibitions from 2011's \"Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty\" through 2019's \"Camp: Notes on Fashion.\"

Her writings include the books Striptease: From Gaslight to Spotlight<\/em> (2003), American Fashion Accessories<\/em> (2008) (written in collaboration with Candy Pratts Price) and Making a Spectacle: A Fashionable History of Eyewear<\/em> (2021).
