This Louis Comfort Tiffany yellow-diamond ring<\/a>, made between 1914 and 1933, comes in its original Tiffany & Co. box.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n

Collectors of fine jewelry<\/a> are accustomed to trade-offs. Important, high-value gemstones aren\u2019t always placed in the most nuanced settings, while an elaborate mounting by a sought-after historical maker might hold a more commonplace stone, or none at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But this yellow-diamond ring hits the ultra-rare trifecta, with important fancy colored stones mounted in an intricate setting by one of the most storied American designers: Louis Comfort Tiffany<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His father, Tiffany & Co.<\/a> founder Charles Lewis Tiffany, introduced the very idea of important gemstones to the U.S. in the mid-19th century, notably with the 128-carat yellow Tiffany Diamond<\/a>, unveiled in 1878. But Louis gravitated to other mediums. He started out as a painter, studying under the Hudson River School<\/a>\u2019s Samuel Colman<\/a> and George Inness<\/a> before moving to interior design and creating the table lamps<\/a>, vases<\/a> and other decorative objects<\/a> for which he would become best known<\/a>. It wasn\u2019t until he was appointed the firm’s design director after his father\u2019s death, in 1902, that he began creating jewels for Tiffany & Co.<\/p>\n\n\n

The ring includes two rough-cut yellow diamonds<\/a> totaling 6.73 carats.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve had Louis Comfort Tiffany jewelry<\/a> before on occasion \u2014 it can be incredibly challenging to find,\u201d says Mallory Whitten, of New Orleans gallery M.S. Rau<\/a>, which is offering the ring through its 1stDibs storefront. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When he did create jewelry, Louis Comfort Tiffany tended to eschew diamonds<\/a>, favoring enamel work<\/a> and semiprecious stones like garnets<\/a>, opals<\/a> or moonstones<\/a>, which were typical of the Art Nouveau<\/a> style he popularized and echoed the shimmering colors<\/a> of his stained glass. \u201cIt was so unusual for Louis Comfort Tiffany to use rare precious gemstones in his work,\u201d says Whitten. \u201cAnd we\u2019ve never seen an example set with two high-value stones.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n

The ring\u2019s handcrafted, Etruscan revival-style<\/a> gold filigree setting<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n

Created between 1914 and 1933, the one-of-a-kind ring features a 4.78-carat fancy vivid yellow diamond sitting atop a smaller 1.95-carat fancy intense yellow stone. The gems are old-mine cut<\/a> and \u201ccatch the light a little bit differently than modern-cut diamonds do,\u201d explains Whitten, who adds that because the cuts are shallow, the stones fit \u201cright up against your skin,\u201d conforming to your finger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even the ring\u2019s setting is unusual. Its Etruscan-revival style<\/a> was popular in the Victorian<\/a> era, yet its singular design is as modern as the artist who created it. In other words, timeless.<\/p>\n\n\n\t
