French dealer Cl\u00e9ment Cividino<\/a> is offering this 1970s desk<\/a> made with aluminum and rosewood. Photos throughout by Stephan Julliard<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

When dealer Cl\u00e9ment Cividino<\/a> came upon a desk<\/a> attributed to the late French designer Michel Boyer<\/a>, he jumped at the chance to buy it. \u201cFor me, it embodies the spirit of modernity of the 1970s<\/a>,\u201d says Cividino, whose gallery is located in Perpignan, a city in the south of France close to the Spanish border. \u201cI love the minimalism and simplicity of Boyer\u2019s creations.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clad with brushed aluminum and a rosewood veneer, the piece was conceived for a real-estate agency in the Brittany region of northwest France. The office included a number of other elements designed by Boyer \u2014 a cocktail table and two stools, as well as a set of decorative aluminum panels for the facade. What Cividino particularly likes about the desk is the way its curved legs are perched on small feet. \u201cIt gives it such great lightness,\u201d he enthuses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The desk is part of Cividino’s exhibition at Spain’s Terra Remota vineyard<\/a> of a 1969 prefab home by Greek architect Nikolaos Xasteros that resembles a small spacecraft. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

This summer, it is part of an exhibition he has organized at the Terra Remota vineyard<\/a>, in the Catalonia region of Spain, that focuses on a flying-saucer-like prefabricated house designed in 1969 by Greek architect Nikolaos Xasteros. Before Cividino restored the structure and brought it to the vineyard, it had been sitting, abandoned, for decades next to a bar in a seaside resort some 45 minutes southeast of Athens by car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is not the first example of small-scale architecture from the 20th century that he has shown at Terra Remota. Others have included a former Total gas station<\/a> designed by Jean Prouv\u00e9<\/a> and one of Georges Candilis<\/a>\u2019s Hexacubes. But for Cividino, the Xasteros House is the most stunning to date. \u201cWhat makes it of particular interest,\u201d he says, \u201cis that it\u2019s the most emblematic of the space race and the notion of living on the moon.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cividino specializes in furniture and objects of the same period, and it was around the time that Neil Armstrong made his \u201cgiant leap for mankind\u201d that Michel Boyer\u2019s career began to take off. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cividino furnished the Xasteros House with pieces that have a similarly space-age<\/a> feel, such as the desk, a smoked-Lucite chair<\/a> by Michel Dumas<\/a> and the metal lamp sculpture<\/a> by Louis Durot<\/a> to the left of the front windows.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Born in 1935, Boyer first attracted attention in the mid-1960s with his collaboration on the interior design of the Banque Rothschild’s new Paris headquarters. After setting up his own design showroom, in 1968, he worked on a host of prestigious decorating projects, including boutiques for Lanvin<\/a> and Christian Dior<\/a>, private residences for Karim Aga Khan and L\u2019Or\u00e9al heiress Liliane Bettencourt and the French embassy in Brasilia. For the last, he famously created a series of wonderfully sleek light fixtures based on the towers of Oscar Niemeyer<\/a>\u2019s Brasilia parliament building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inside the Xasteros House, the desk has been paired with a sculptural smoked-Lucite chair<\/a> designed circa 1971 by Michel Dumas<\/a>, as well as postwar ceramics by Pol Chambost<\/a> and Madoura<\/a> and a vintage table lamp by Hans J\u00fcrgen Fischer. But Cividino insists the piece could be integrated into any setting. \u201cIt\u2019s both very representative of its era and completely timeless,\u201d he says. \u201cIt could even be juxtaposed with a collection of Greek or Roman antiquities<\/a> and function really well.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\t
