Fred Rigby Studio<\/a>\u2019s cushy Cove Slipper 2.5 Seater sofa<\/a> is composed of two modular sections joined together.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n

The large, ball-like feet of Fred Rigby Studio<\/a>\u2019s Cove Slipper settee<\/a> are ever-so-slightly provocative, drawing your attention to furniture parts that we rarely think about. \u201cThey catch your eye,\u201d says the eponymous company founder, chatting on the phone from his hometown of London. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rigby has a way of grabbing your attention. He started off doing art direction and set design for music videos and then, about a decade ago, moved to designing retail stores. \u201cPeople would ask where the pieces were from,\u201d he says, recalling projects for which he created seating<\/a>, tables<\/a> and displays, like Francis Gallery, in Bath, England, the brainchild of Cereal <\/em>magazine founder Rosa Park. \u201cI started to think of them as furniture calling cards.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

During the worst of the pandemic, Rigby shifted into producing a full furniture line, all pieces made to order in London. \u201cI used that time to design a total collection,\u201d he says. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Cove Slipper \u2014 which, as part of the modular Cove series, can be used as a standalone piece or combined with its chunky-footed siblings to create a sofa \u2014 is armless, geometric and cozy. The seat cushions are markedly puffier than the back ones, and the back is relatively low-slung.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The oak of the frame is set off by low-pile wool-boucl\u00e9 upholstery in hues Rigby developed in collaboration with the British company Tibor<\/a>. The sofa shown here (called a 2.5-seater because the individual chairs are so generously proportioned) is done up in Woodland Green. \u201cEverything is linked back to nature for me,\u201d Rigby says of the color.<\/p>\n\n\n

Just like the coffee tables<\/a>, dining chairs<\/a> and other items in his collection, the Cove pieces are recognizably Rigby\u2019s handiwork. \u201cPeople link our work to curves,\u201d he says, citing the influence of Jean Roy\u00e8re<\/a> and other modern<\/a> greats. \u201cAll our pieces have a certain degree of curviness to them.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Rigby, the Cove Slipper is an answer to the question he asks himself everyday: \u201cHow can we bring a touch of color and playfulness into people’s homes?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t
