Its arachnid vibes make it supremely suitable for spooky season, but \u201cit wears all year long,” says Stacy Lauren Smith, owner of estate jeweler Stazia Loren<\/a>, which specializes in vintage costume pieces and is offering the jewel on 1stDibs. \u201cIt is one of the most divine necklaces I have ever seen \u2014 so special, so well made \u2014 and it always provokes dialogue.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Plus, the necklace is lightweight and versatile, so you can dress it up or down. Invited to a sophisticated Halloween party? Smith suggests combining it with \u201ca strapless black gown or even a black skirt with a white shirt tied at the waist.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their intricate patterns have made spiderwebs a favorite fashion motif for decades. Although this jewel is from 2013, it aligns perfectly with the style of Elsa Schiaparelli<\/a>, the house’s founding designer (consider her iconic Lobster dinner dress<\/a>, a collaboration with Surrealist<\/a> artist Salvador Dal\u00ed<\/a>). \u201cIn the 1930s, Schiaparelli worked with the greatest minds of her time, including Jean Cocteau<\/a>, Man Ray<\/a>, M\u00e9ret Oppenheim<\/a> and more,\u201d Smith points out. <\/p>\n\n\n

Acquired from a Parisian dealer, the necklace is a bit of an outlier among the YSL<\/a>, Chanel<\/a> and Christian Dior<\/a> designs that tend to dominate the collector\u2019s market for vintage costume jewelry<\/a> from the big fashion houses. \u201cI have never seen anything like it,\u201d says Smith. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The piece could possibly be the invention of Christian Lacroix<\/a>, who designed a collection for Schiaparelli in 2013<\/a>. Or it may just be the work of an anonymous talent in the jewelry department<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But who conceived it may matter little to those bewitched by the necklace’s intricate metalwork and diamant\u00e9 stones clustered to create the effect of a spiderweb\u2019s silk threads. And Schiaparelli will always be . . . Schiaparelli. \u201cThe things that Elsa Schiaparelli chose to design were so far ahead of their time<\/a>,\u201d says Smith. \u201cThough this necklace comes many decades later, some people will ask, \u2018What are you wearing?\u2019 While others will instantly recognize it as Maison Schiaparelli.
