Massachusetts-based Michael Coffey<\/a> has been creating dynamic wood furniture since the mid-1960s. This 1982 Satan’s Tongue table<\/a> is made from padouk<\/a>. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Whoever said \u201cDon\u2019t judge a book by its cover\u201d hasn\u2019t seen the new valedictory volume Michael Coffey: Sculptor and Furniture Maker in Wood<\/a><\/em>. Pointed Leaf Press managed to give the book a wrapper almost as tactile as the furniture Coffey<\/a> has been carving out of bubinga<\/a>, Mozambique and padouk<\/a> wood for nearly 60 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a maker, Coffey has few peers. Joseph Walsh<\/a> and Wendell Castle<\/a> come to mind, but Coffey’s designs, with surfaces as distinctive as fingerprints, are always recognizable as Coffeys. Honestly, if you\u2019re not obsessed with this man\u2019s work, you haven\u2019t been paying attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rectilinearity is \u201cboring, static and without feeling,\u201d he writes in the new book. \u201cIn my work I borrow the curving line from nature because it conveys emotion \u2014 excitement, tenderness, danger, whimsy. It speaks of movement, like flowing water or a running animal. It is going somewhere.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To prevent the table’s cantilevered top from tipping, Coffey designed the piece with a heavier base.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

That certainly describes his 1982 Satan\u2019s Tongue table<\/a>, offered by New York\u2019s Maison Gerard<\/a>. (This Satan\u2019s Tongue is the first of several similarly named pieces. It\u2019s the only one, Coffey says, that he made of padouk, a tropical wood known for exceptional stability.) The piece is a single swoop: a tongue or a serpent or a flying carpet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI think what\u2019s special about it is that the cantilever is defying gravity, and that creates a tension,\u201d Coffey says. \u201cIt looks like it\u2019s going to fall, but\u201d \u2014 because he was careful to make the base heavier than the top \u2014 \u201cit doesn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The table is \u201cwhimsical, and it flows with the grain,\u201d observes Benoist Drut<\/a>, of Maison Gerard. \u201cMichael knows wood like nobody else, and he lets the wood do what it wants to do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Growing up at the end of a rutted dirt road in Pennsylvania during the Great Depression, Coffey learned a few things, including how to make his own toys and how to appreciate nature. Now living in Western Massachusetts, he\u2019s still making his own toys, though he is happy to share them with discerning and patient collectors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen you commission a piece from him, he really puts everything into it,\u201d says interior designer Amy Lau<\/a>, who has several custom Coffeys in her New York apartment<\/a>. Each piece can take a month or more to make, with Coffey acting as both engineer and artist. <\/p>\n\n\n

His drawings, which he transfers from paper to the raw lumber in crayon, demonstrate the amount of forethought each project requires. \u201cBefore I cut a piece of wood, I know exactly what I\u2019m going to do and how I\u2019m going to do it,\u201d he says. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

No one who knows Coffey agrees with his description of himself in the new book: \u201ca stubborn, quixotic old codger.\u201d Old, maybe, but at 94, he is \u201cjolly and a lot of fun,\u201d says Lau. And incredibly productive. Although he can no longer do much physical work, he goes into the studio every day, where he supervises two longtime assistants and where, he says, he\u2019s \u201cstill the arbiter of quality.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t
