Westland London<\/a>\u2019s George II chimneypiece<\/a> in white and green marble is an excellent example of English rococo style<\/a>.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n

The sheer heft and presence of a great chimneypiece<\/a> \u2014 better known to some as a mantel \u2014 make it a sight to behold. But the George II chimneypiece<\/a> in white statuary and verd antique marble that is being offered by furniture gallery Westland London<\/a> takes the form to a new level with its intricate artistry and surprising history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s the perfect example of the English rococo style<\/a>,\u201d says Laura Dadswell, the gallery\u2019s director. That style, which was directly inspired by <\/a>French decorative arts<\/a> of the time, began to gel around 1740, and this chimneypiece was made somewhere between 1750 and 1760. <\/p>\n\n\n

Details like trailing jasmine sprigs are carved from white statuary marble.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n

Its carvings include several kinds of delightful scrolls, as well as jasmine sprigs and acanthus (oak leaf) details, making it a treasure trove of the era’s symbols. They are made all the more striking by the contrast between the white and green marble. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The piece\u2019s original location is not known, but in the late Victorian<\/a> era it was installed in a great estate, Minto House, in Roxburghshire, Scotland. The historic home was torn down in 1992 \u2014 an infamous loss that still rankles preservationists. <\/p>\n\n\n

The chimneypiece was installed in the Octagonal Drawing Room at Minto House, a historic home in Scotland that has since been demolished.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n

Dadswell says the chimneypiece \u201cmay have jibed well with Victorian taste for excess and grandeur.\u201d And she notes that as one of the only remaining vestiges of Minto, it has additional significance. \u201cIt\u2019s an important relic that survived the demolition.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Westland London has worked to conserve the piece, and it\u2019s now in top condition to be enjoyed by a lucky buyer. So where, exactly, should it go? \u201cI\u2019d love to see it go back to Scotland,\u201d says Dadswell. \u201cBut I would say, the most important thing is that it be in a room designed around it. It has to be the star.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t
