French ceramicist Agn\u00e8s Debizet<\/a> takes a rather unusual approach to her craft. \u201cShe\u2019s not really part of the system and has a very singular aesthetic,\u201d notes her London-based dealer M\u00e9lissa Paul<\/a>. \u201cThere\u2019s always a very strong narrative to her creations.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since taking up pottery<\/a> in 1980, she has deliberately avoided mastering traditional techniques. \u201cI prefer to let accidents happen and to repair them, if necessary,\u201d says Debizet, who splits her time between Paris and an atelier in Burgundy. And for decades, she created solely sculpture<\/a>, rather than functional pieces, displaying little concern for commercial success. \u201cI wasn\u2019t really bothered about being exhibited,\u201d she continues. \u201cI just lived for my art.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

That changed a decade ago when she was approached by Galerie May in Paris with the idea of transforming some of her pieces into lamps. She started producing lighting<\/a> and furniture<\/a> using the same vocabulary of forms as her sculptures. Much of her inspiration comes from the natural world, and her series to date have included \u201cRoots,\u201d \u201cTrees\u201d and \u201cCreatures.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAgn\u00e8s has an incredibly profuse and fertile imagination,\u201d says Paul, who worked as an embroidery designer<\/a>, most notably under Karl Lagerfeld at Chanel<\/a>, before segueing into the decorative arts<\/a>. She opened her current gallery in the East London district of Hackney in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n

Debizet\u2019s Berg\u00e8re chair belongs to her \u201cMorels\u201d series, comprising pieces that recall the texture of the edible mushroom\u2019s distinctive pitted cap. Yet, for her, the chair also evokes a whole host of other associations. It\u2019s named for its resemblance to a sheep\u2019s fleece and to the extravagant 18th-century wigs worn by the likes of Marie Antoinette, who famously liked to dress up as a shepherdess, or berg\u00e8re<\/em> in French.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Its dimensions were dictated by those of Debizet\u2019s kiln, which accommodates a maximum height of 37 inches. It is made from stoneware<\/a> covered with a layer of porcelain<\/a> before the first firing. \u201cAs the porcelain retracts differently with the heat, it creates lots of mini-cracks,\u201d she explains. These she fills with black fusible clay<\/a> before the second firing in order to highlight the pattern they make.<\/p>\n\n\n

While the end result may be extremely sculptural, it is also apparently quite comfortable. \u201cAgn\u00e8s has really managed to adapt its form to the human body,\u201d Paul says. \u201cThere\u2019s also something very fluffy about it. Despite ceramic being a hard material, she\u2019s given it an incredibly cozy feel.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t
