It\u2019s about bringing these important cultural markers of identity into the intimacy of one\u2019s own home.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To that end, Lewis flanked Barnett&#8217;s contemporary textile piece <em>Made for Mom<\/em>, 2022, with traditional <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/buy\/west-african-sculptures\/\">West African sculptures<\/a> and paired a streamlined mid-century <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/adrian-pearsall\/\">Adrian Pearsall<\/a> sofa with a custom rounded bench he created in collaboration with fabricator Wesley Daniels. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/folk-art\/masks\/origin\/african\/\">mask<\/a> above the Pearsall sofa is also West African.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Everything in this room feels like it has dimensionality,&#8221; Lewis notes. &#8220;In our designs, we aim to create visual and harmonious balance between furniture, art and objects. So, O&#8217;Sullivan hung a quartet of antique and vintage <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/buy\/portrait-paintings-women\/\">portraits of women<\/a> to introduce a human presence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These are (clockwise from left) <em>Portrait of Blonde Girl<\/em>, 1950, by John Miles Bourne Benson; <em>Anne Burges<\/em>, 1751, by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/francis-cotes\/\">Francis Cotes<\/a>; <em>A Portrait of Marianne Langham<\/em>, ca. 1808, by Jacques-Laurent Agasse; and <em>Sunlit interior, the artist\u2019s daughter Ellen is playing the piano<\/em>, date unknown, by Peter Vilhelm Ilsted.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The paintings not only complement the room but they also stand out on the mural, as they are in bold, ornate gold frames,&#8221; O&#8217;Sullivan says. &#8220;They work well within the space, considering its bespoke contemporary pieces like the dining table, but they also hold their merit against the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/storage-case-pieces\/sideboards\/style\/mid-century-modern\/\">mid-century sideboard<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/lighting\/table-lamps\/style\/mid-century-modern\/\">table lamp<\/a>. We love how these <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/art\/paintings\/style\/old-masters\/\">Old Master paintings<\/a> add depth and intrigue to the room. The oversize <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/buy\/bean-bags\/\">beanbags<\/a> were custom upholstered in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/buy\/otomi-embroidery\/\">embroidered Otomi textiles<\/a> sourced at the local markets.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both the beanbags and the tassels in the palm echo the rainbow-hued <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/buy\/wall-hangings\/\">wall hanging<\/a> near window, which the homeowners picked up in Mexico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The elephant in the room is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/katherine-bernhardt-\/\">Katherine Bernhardt<\/a>\u2019s acrylic and spray-painted canvas of children&#8217;s book icon Babar. &#8220;This area is ready for anything from a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/buy\/game-vintage\/\">game night<\/a> to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/buy\/cocktail-party\/\">cocktail party<\/a>,&#8221; as he describes it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A plush contemporary sectional sofa and ottoman are accompanied by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/designs\/borge-mogensen-spanish-chair\/\">B\u00f8rge Mogensen&#8217;s Spanish chairs<\/a>. Since it\u2019s a large single piece, we felt that the surrounding pieces should be groupings.&#8221; Santini explains. The cluster to the left of the bed includes blue-chip works by the likes of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/pablo-picasso\">Pablo Picasso<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/wayne-thiebaud\">Wayne Thiebaud<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/agnes-martin\/\">Agnes Martin<\/a>. A suite of Martin lithographs from the same 1990 portfolio appears on the right side, along with Elizabeth Schwaiger&#8217;s <em>Warm Flow<\/em>, 2017. The latest owners asked the London designer to give the house a soul transplant by reintroducing color and eclecticism in its interiors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Case in point: this seating nook in what Harding calls an &#8220;otherwise underwhelming corridor,&#8221; where she placed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/art\/paintings\/portrait-paintings\/period\/19th-century\/\">19th-century portrait<\/a> of a French gentleman in a glossy fire-engine-red <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/buy\/antique-frames\/\">picture frame<\/a> as &#8220;a way of offsetting any pretensions he might have aspired to.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The rest of the furnishings are an odd amalgamation &#8220;that shouldn\u2019t really work together but somehow do,&#8221; she adds.
