\u201cI’m drawn to interesting pieces that feel impactful, and given the neutral palette of this home, we needed some heavy hitters<\/a> for the space to have a sense of intelligence and character,\u201d says Chicago-based Wendy Labrum<\/a>, referring to the living room of a greystone residence<\/a> she designed near Wrigley Field. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Labrum put several statement-making pieces front and center, including two Soriana chairs<\/a> by Afra and Tobia Scarpa<\/a> and a black Ox chair<\/a> by Danish legend Illum Wikkels\u00f8<\/a>. Bridging the space between them are two Paul McCobb stools<\/a>. A Michel Boyer<\/a> for Rouve<\/a> stainless-steel side table stands beside the custom sofa, while a vintage Jean Prouv\u00e9<\/a> sconce is mounted above. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Devin Hines, of New York\u2013 and Los Angeles\u2013based firm Hines Collective<\/a>, took inspiration from his clients\u2019 love of mod furniture<\/a> and their existing Eero Aarnio Ball chair<\/a> when designing the sleek, minimalist main bedroom in their Manhattan apartment<\/a>, which, fittingly, is adjacent to New York\u2019s Museum of Modern Art<\/a>. Created in 1963, the futuristic-looking seat was made to be roomy enough<\/a> for the Finnish designer\u2019s family to sit in it together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe designed the statement headboard to speak to the chair in a fresh way,\u201d says Hines, who covered the custom piece in a Paul Smith<\/a> fabric from Maharam<\/a>, lending the space a touch of color, and topped the Mondo Collection<\/a> bed with a playful Missoni<\/a> bedspread. Cobra lamps<\/a> by Elio Martinelli<\/a> sit on bedside tables, while a Brix modular stacking system<\/a> by Bensen<\/a> provides storage. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

One look at the Gio Ponti<\/a>\u2013inspired interiors of a Jersey Shore cottage<\/a> designed by Ariel Ashe and Reinaldo Leandro<\/a> makes clear why the New York\u2013based duo chose the DS-600 sofa<\/a> from Swiss maker de Sede<\/a> for the living room. The modular system, designed in 1972 and known informally as the Snake<\/a> (or Tatzelwurm, depending on where you are in the world), not only complements the mezzanine balustrade and the lines of the wood-paneled walls and ceiling<\/a> but also provides contrast with its sexy curves. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sofa is not the only iconic piece the designers selected. A vintage Akari<\/a> pendant by Isamu Noguchi<\/a> hangs overhead. It was sourced from 1stDibs, as was a vintage Angelo Lelii for Arredoluce Triennale floor lamp<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur process brings together collectibles, internationally recognized design pieces, antiques and vintage finds,\u201d says London-based Brigitta Spinocchia Freund<\/a>. Her concept for the study of a house in the Oxfordshire countryside<\/a> was inspired by her client\u2019s love of the classic 1956 Eames lounge chair<\/a>. Playing off the chair, Spinocchia Freund and her team \u201cexplored other key mid-century<\/a> influences to build an interior-design story that was comfortable and chic,\u201d she explains. Thus, they installed a 1960s<\/a> teak wall unit by Thygesen and S\u00f8rensen<\/a> for Hansen & Guldborg<\/a> that comprises a bar cabinet, a small desk and a chest. To counter the professorial vibe of these pieces, they added a playful Wormhole floor lamp by Simone Calcinai for Brass Brothers<\/a> that puts one in mind of a Jacques Tati film. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe goal was to create a space that the couple would never want to leave,\u201d says Jeremiah Brent<\/a>, describing the main bedroom in a recent project in Brentwood, California<\/a>. \u201cEverything was designed with future heirlooms in mind.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What better piece to use, then, than a Soriana chair<\/a> by Afra and Tobia Scarpa<\/a> for Cassina<\/a>? \u201cThe Soriana chaise has always been a favorite at Jeremiah Brent Design,\u201d says the New York\u2013based interiors expert, who\u2019s been tapped to join the Netflix series Queer Eye<\/em><\/a>. \u201cIt feels so contemporary and looks good in almost any material.\u201d Here, Brent chose an alpaca fabric from Holland & Sherry. To provide subtle lighting, the designer selected an alabaster pendant from Handelshuis Wassenaar<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When converting a former bedroom into a multifunctional TV lounge and game room in an apartment on Manhattan\u2019s Central Park West<\/a>, Andrew Kotchen, Matt Berman and Thomas Zoli, of Workshop\/APD<\/a> \u2014 which has offices in New York, as well as Connecticut, Massachusetts and Minnesota \u2014 wanted to reflect the energy of their clients, a vibrant and creative family of five. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Drawing inspiration from varsity colors for the room’s palette, they took a big swing with the sofa. \u201cDesigned by Nina Edwards Anker<\/a> for Dune, the Landscape sofa\u2019s form is as young and playful as its end users,\u201d says Berman. \u201cClose to the ground and devoid of sharp edges, it melts into the room, providing a spot for chill movie viewing or a safe and comfortable landing zone for energetic play.\u201d Good thing, given the mini basketball hoop on the AstroTurf wall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reminiscent of basketballs themselves are a pair of Michel Ducaroy Togo chairs<\/a>. Opposite these is a Clifford Ross photograph of Mount Sopris. \u201cIt\u2019s an Aspen peak the family knows well,\u201d says Berman. The placement of the work is crucial, he notes: \u201cIt\u2019s positioned a safe distance from wayward basketball shots.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere\u2019s nothing like the classics,\u201d says Los Angeles designer Brigette Romanek<\/a>. \u201cI love an eclectic room and the mixing of eras.\u201d And mix she did in the family room of a Beverly Hills home<\/a>. Starting with a contemporary asymmetrical sofa from Ligne Roset<\/a>, Romanek deployed a vintage coffee table and a mid-century Hans Wegner Papa Bear chair<\/a> to create a relaxing space in which the clients could \u201ccome together and talk about the day, about life,\u201d she says. Watching over the scene are two African busts<\/a> on a tigerwood stand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nineteen-seventies<\/a> cool meets comfy individualism in the living room of a Miami home<\/a> by Tiffany Thompson, of Portland firm Duett Interiors<\/a>. Key to that aesthetic is a set of 1971 Mario Bellini<\/a> for B&B Italia<\/a> Le Bambole<\/a> leather seats, purchased on 1stDibs from Modernab<\/a>, which face an Art Deco<\/a> chair found at JUSTCO<\/a> and reupholstered in a chocolaty mohair. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For some textural and material contrast, Thompson added a steel-mesh credenza<\/a>, as well as two showstopping artworks \u2014 Cesar Bailleux<\/a>\u2019s cloverleaf-shaped wall sculpture Make Believe<\/a><\/em>, also acquired through JUSTCO on 1stDibs, and Anthony James\u2019s light sculpture 50″ Icosahedron<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When creating a media-room-cum-office for an apartment in Miami Beach<\/a>, Adam Charlap Hyman and Andre Herrero, of New York\u2013 and L.A.-based firm Charlap Hyman & Herrero<\/a>, used the famed Gae Aulenti<\/a>\u2013designed steel-clad Palazzo Pucci apartment in Florence as an inspiration. \u201cThe pieces in this room were meant to bring a good mix of high-tech and natural,\u201d explains Charlap Hyman. \u201cSo, we have a bit of steel near a bit of canvas and wood.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The duo installed a custom stainless-steel desk and cabinetry, finishing the space with an Afra and Tobia Scarpa Monk chair<\/a> from the 1970s. A Beni Ourain rug<\/a> in a vibrant, true-to-the-era blue provides a punch of color.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the case of a house in L.A.\u2019s Laurel Canyon<\/a> designed by Giampiero Tagliaferri<\/a>, not only is much of the furniture iconic but so is the building itself. The 1938 structure was the home and studio of mid-century master architect A. Quincy Jones and the first residence of his own design, explains Tagliaferri, who recently moved into his own new studio<\/a>, in the city\u2019s Silver Lake neighborhood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In conceiving a sunlit nook off the living room, Tagliaferri says he aimed to add interest by \u201cjuxtaposing a highly angular space with a completely rounded and soft piece.\u201d To that end, he placed a Gaetano Pesce La Mamma, or Up 5, chair and ottoman<\/a> \u2014 a design that all but hugs the occupant with its warmth \u2014 in front of the slanted wall of windows. A distinctly linear Omicron floor lamp by Vico Magistretti<\/a> for Artemide<\/a> and a similarly lean Osvaldo Borsani<\/a> side table heighten the contrast. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

These choices were made with great reverence for the structure\u2019s past, says Tagliaferri: \u201cEvery modification was carefully executed to uphold the house\u2019s integrity while introducing tension through the furniture.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t
