The serene primary bedroom of a Hamptons beach house<\/a> by Sol\u00eds Betancourt & Sherrill<\/a> may look like it has always had a window seat, but the firm\u2019s principals, Jose Sol\u00eds <\/strong>Betancourt and Paul Sherrill, introduced it when they renovated the Watermill, New York, home. Sol\u00eds Betancourt notes that they needed to accommodate HVAC ducting and add storage to the room. Those structural modifications allowed them to create the inviting nook. In keeping with the residence\u2019s French country<\/a> vibe, the designers installed two pairs of antique window frames<\/a> that afford access to the storage closets. They found treasures to complete the space on 1stDibs, including a demilune table<\/a> and mirror<\/a> from Churchill Galleries<\/a> as well as a 19th-century French armchair<\/a> from C\u00f4t\u00e9 Jardin Antiques<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a Craftsman home in San Francisco<\/a> designed by Marea Clark<\/a>, the window in the client\u2019s study looks out over Presidio National Park and the Golden Gate Bridge. \u201cWith that view, it was important to make the space special,\u201d says Clark. \u201cThe room is swathed in wood paneling<\/a>, so we wanted to honor the history and depth of the space while bringing in some fresh new pieces and color.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clark used a mix of fabrics to reference the room\u2019s wood tones and the nature outside the window while adding texture and pattern. The circa 1980 walnut desk table<\/a> and the client\u2019s own captain\u2019s chair<\/a> also harmonize with the wood-paneled walls. The globe sconce is by the Urban Electric Company<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When designing a 1930s Hollywood Regency\u2013style house<\/a> in the Bel Air neighborhood of Los Angeles, Nathan Turner<\/a> bathed the living room bay-window seat in a soft lavender to create a jewel-box vibe. He then turned to France<\/a> for the furnishings \u2014 literally. A shopping trip there with the client yielded some stunning vintage pieces, including the delicate gold-toned tasseled stool<\/a> and the dainty nailhead-trimmed desk chair<\/a>. The Lucite-and-brass desk, however, was purchased in neighboring Belgium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Devin Hines, founder<\/a> of Hines Collective<\/a>, and his team furnished the minimalist space with vintage pieces that he found on 1stDibs, including a Hans Wegner<\/a> daybed from Mid Century Mobler<\/a> and a Warren Platner<\/a> for Knoll<\/a> stone-topped table from Tom Gibbs Studio<\/a>. A vintage walnut chair<\/a> complements the custom built-in desk. For the window seat, \u201cwe wanted to lean in to the idea of a room within a room,\u201d Hines says. \u201cSo, we focused on creating an area of respite where one could step away from the usual day-to-day office activities to take a call, have some coffee or just take a beat before sending the next email.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tasked with creating a study, reading and storage space in the former library of a 1930s brick Italian Renaissance Revival home<\/a> in Seattle, Kylee Shintaffer<\/a> ingeniously built alcoves around each of the room\u2019s windows. A black-lacquered oak desk<\/a> and an Oly Studio<\/a> chair upholstered in fabric by Kravet<\/a> make up the work area, with a brass martini table<\/a> from Revival Home<\/a> by the window seat giving the client a place to unwind at the end of the day. Another brass piece \u2014 a globe lantern ceiling fixture by Vaughan Designs<\/a> \u2014 sheds light on things, while a wool flat-weave rug<\/a> provides cohesion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The hacienda-style home<\/a> in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, by DHD Architecture & Interior Design<\/a> may measure 12,000 square feet, but the siesta nook the team tucked under a stone staircase is the epitome of snug. Everything in it, from the lighting<\/a> to the handloomed cushion and pillows<\/a>, was sourced locally. Those choices \u201cjust added so much texture, history and character to this modern hacienda and felt really contemporary at the same time,\u201d explains firm partner Steffani Aarons. Only the rug, a vintage piece belonging to the clients, came from elsewhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Studio DB<\/a> tucked some thoughtful amenities into a guest room in a four-story beach house<\/a> in New Jersey. \u201cWe designed the bunk room with hidden storage and charging stations,\u201d says firm cofounder Britt Zunino. \u201cThe window seat maximizes the ocean views and creates additional seating<\/a> for reading and hanging out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The room\u2019s nautical blue and sunny yellow evoke a perfect beach day, which is appropriate for a home located on the Jersey Shore. Zunino used a Moroccan rug<\/a>, flush-mount ceiling light<\/a> with a hardwood canopy and vintage-inspired red sconces to deck out the space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In an Atlanta showhouse<\/a>, Krista Nye Nicholas and Tami Ramsay, founders of Cloth & Kind<\/a>, used muted colors, geometric patterns and comfy furnishings to make a bonus room over the garage into a den that works for daytime reading just as well as it does for evening cocktails. \u201cWe loved transforming this space,\u201d Nicholas says. \u201cEspecially the daybed<\/a> area, because you can\u2019t help but be drawn into it \u2014 sunny and moody spots alike beckon you to take a seat and abide awhile.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The team reupholstered a vintage wingback chair<\/a> to provide additional seating and placed a tree-trunk coffee table<\/a> to serve as a spot to set down a cocktail or coffee. On the floor, they added texture with an antique runner<\/a> over a neutral jute rug<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The current owners of an Arts and Crafts<\/a> home in Sydney, Australia<\/a>, that\u2019s been in their family for four generations brought in Marylou Sobel Interior Design<\/a> to refresh the decor. \u201cThey asked us to preserve its past while embracing a colorful future,\u201d Sobel says. That included sprucing up a handsome but dark built-in window seat in a guest bedroom. \u201cThe bench seat is original, down to the stained-glass windows<\/a> and the ceiling, which still has horsehair plaster.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sobel designed the custom pillows and curtains<\/a> and placed a wooden pedestal<\/a> nearby for a plant or cut flowers, to give the area a light, welcoming feel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The den of a San Francisco Edwardian home<\/a> designed by ABD Studio<\/a> was carefully conceived to accommodate both work and play. The usual mirrored top on the Made Goods<\/a> faux-shagreen coffee table, for example, was replaced with a wood-veneer inlay to deter cheating at cards. The custom oak window seating was added to take maximum advantage of the view of the Laurel Heights neighborhood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two slimmer pieces, Lawson-Fenning<\/a>\u2019s Thin Frame lounge chair in antiqued brass with brown leather upholstery and Jonathan Adler<\/a>\u2019s Rider X-bench in an upbeat print, offer more places to sit around the table, as does a hide<\/a> layered atop the vintage rug. Ravenhill Studio<\/a>\u2019s three-arm Church pendant<\/a> hangs above.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They accented the custom bench with comfortable pillows and an Adirondack<\/a>-style root table<\/a> resting on a hide rug. \u201cWe wanted to draw the eye out to the river,\u201d Hendricks says. \u201cThis window nook is a prized spot in the home to read and enjoy views of the property throughout the day.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
