You can be forgiven if your initial reaction to Uchronia<\/a>\u2019s fantastical, tassel-bedecked, extravagantly fringed Lilypad pedestal<\/a> is bewilderment. Is it high Victoriana<\/a>? An escapee from a half-forgotten fairy tale? A prop from a Yorgos Lanthimos movie?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In fact, the otherworldly Lilypad is a limited-edition plant stand designed by the Paris-based design collective<\/a> and produced in collaboration with two venerable French companies: the silk house Prelle, which was founded in 1752 and today has showrooms in Paris, Lyon and New York; and Passementerie Verrier, an equally legendary maker of tassels, fringe, pompons, rosettes and all manner of trimmings.<\/p>\n\n\n

The Lilypad was inspired by a time-worn plant stand<\/a> discovered by Uchronia’s design team.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n

The Lilypad, along with Uchronia\u2019s scalloped Flower cushions<\/a>, glittering Pompom stool<\/a> and crescent-shaped Sunny armchair<\/a>, all available on 1stDibs, is part of the studio\u2019s recent Candy Box collection, intended to show off historic French craft traditions reimagined for the current era.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The luscious sunrise colors \u2014 pinks and mauves and yellows \u2014 are very much in keeping with Uchronia\u2019s joyful ethos. Although the firm\u2019s residential and commercial interiors<\/a> lean 1960s<\/a> or \u201970s<\/a> more often than Victorian or baroque<\/a>, they unabashedly embrace an over-the-top technicolor palette. \u201cWe\u2019re not afraid of anything that could be seen as kitsch or pass\u00e9,\u201d Uchronia\u2019s founder, Julien Sebban, told Elle Decor<\/em><\/a>, which gave the collective a coveted place on its A-List for 2024. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n

The Candy Box series is not Uchronia\u2019s first outing with Prelle, for which it has created fabric designs based on seaweed, waves and floral sprays, as well. \u201cWe love flowers, waves, movement and visual trickery,\u201d says Cl\u00e9mentine Bricard, a key member of Uchronia\u2019s design team. Another aspect of their endless creativity, she says, is \u201cgiving new life to pieces we have hunted down.\u201d The Lilypad began with such a vintage find. \u201cIt was an old wooden plant stand<\/a>, totally worn by time. We fell in love with it and imagined a whole universe of colors to reveal and enhance it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCandy Box\u201d is also the title of Uchronia\u2019s installation at Prelle\u2019s East 10th Street showroom in New York, which has been deliciously transformed into a silk<\/a>-swagged and -draped chamber furnished with pieces from the collection. The temporary exhibition is on site only for a season, which is fitting for a studio that takes its name from a genre of speculative fiction that plays with concepts of time and history. (The neologism uchronia <\/em>is composed of the Greek word for time<\/em> and prefix meaning no<\/em>.) \u201cWe create places of experience,\u201d Bricard says.<\/p>\n\n\n\t
