With its gold-nugget texture, sculptural form and electric hues, this modernist ring<\/a> does not immediately announce itself as the work of Chaumet<\/a>, the heritage French jewelry<\/a> house founded in 1780. Its best-loved pieces tend to be more classic in style, including a long and impressive line of diamond-encrusted tiaras<\/a> befitting the official jeweler to Empress Jos\u00e9phine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe artistry of this ring is rooted in classic design. But over its two centuries of history, the brand\u2019s jewels have been influenced by the eras in which they were created,\u201d says 1stDibs seller Nadine Krakov<\/a>, who is offering the piece. \u201cChaumet\u2019s design approach was at a turning point in the nineteen sixties<\/a> and seventies<\/a>, a time of experimentation and freedom.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

The ring promises to be especially appealing to Chaumet collectors, \u201cwho have developed an eye for high-end workmanship,\u201d says Krakov. \u201cThey are leaning toward pieces that are decorated with interesting and unique details.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adding to its allure is the fact that Chaumet is making its debut on the world stage as the official creator of the medals that will be awarded during the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. Gold, silver and bronze all feature metal \u201csunrays\u201d radiating from a central hexagon \u2014 a nod to France\u2019s hexagonal shape \u2014 fashioned of iron from the Eiffel Tower.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In terms of design, do the medals and the ring intersect? Krakov thinks so. \u201cThe sculptural and architectural influences are what these pieces have in common,\u201d she says. \u201cAdditionally, the unique metal texture plays an important role in shaping their overall look \u2014 innovative textures and finishes were Chaumet\u2019s signature.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the true Chaumet aficionado, however, the ring\u2019s distinctive character is far more important than any glamorous association with les Jeux Olympiques<\/em>. \u201cDespite its abstract look, it\u2019s well proportioned and carries a calculated symmetry,\u201d says Krakov. \u201cThe fact that you can switch the stone is one of those clever, intricate Chaumet details that make its pieces so great.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t
