Photo by Walter Sanders\/Cond\u00e9 Nast via Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Surrounding the whole scene is a silvery wooden frame with a deep linear grain. \u201cWhen the artist\u2019s grandson saw the painting, he immediately remarked about the frame, as he knew the style from many of his grandfather\u2019s works,\u201d says Keith Sherman, cofounder of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/dealers\/helicline-fine-art\/\">Helicline Fine Art<\/a>, which represents the piece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ludwig Bemelmans was born in Merano, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/buy\/austria-hungary\/\">Austria-Hungary<\/a> (today part of Italy), in 1898 to a Belgian painter-hotelier father and a German mother. Photo courtesy of Viking Books for Young Readers<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Bemelmans dreamed of being a cartoonist \u2014 he even had a comic strip called \u201cCount Bric-a-Brac\u201d that ran for six months in <em>New York World<\/em> magazine in 1926 \u2014 until \u200b\u200bMay Massee, an acquaintance who was an editor at Viking Press, convinced him to write and illustrate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/buy\/children-book\/\">children\u2019s books<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Throughout the 1930s, he published a string of books for kids, including the Newbery Honor\u2013winning<em> The Golden Basket<\/em> (1936), which took place in Belgium, where he\u2019d honeymooned with his wife Madeleine \u201cMimi\u201d Freund. The story introduced, in passing, a dozen young boarding-school girls on a stroll with their nun caretaker. Photo by Durston Saylor<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cClearly, in the late 1940s, Bemelmans was in a New York City frame of mind,\u201d Sherman says. \u201cThe artist painted the interior of the bar with murals depicting the seasons in Central Park, with Madeline. The bar opened in 1947, about the same year that the Coney Island painting was created and a year before Bemelmans\u2019s July 3, 1948, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/buy\/the-new-yorker-covers\/\"><em>New Yorker<\/em> magazine cover<\/a> depicting Coney Island \u2014 with an astonishingly similar rendering of the Cyclone roller coaster \u2014 was published.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This was an era of great buoyancy and growing prosperity in the U.S. The German and Japanese empires had been defeated, and soldiers were swarming back home to find peacetime jobs, have fun and make babies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Coney Island offered free admission and discounts to the military throughout the 1940s.
