Photo by Douglas Friedman<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Robert Guillerme (1913\u201390) and Jacques Chambron (1914\u20132001), the French creative duo behind mid-20th-century furniture company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/votre-maison\/furniture\/\">Votre Maison<\/a>, met under unusual circumstances: They discussed design while imprisoned in a forced-labor camp. The pair\u2019s combined talents later resulted in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/style\/modern\/\">modern<\/a> furniture with distinctive details. The beautifully carved <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/material\/oak\/\">oak<\/a>, combined with its graphic and playful design, captures everything I love about Guillerme et Chambron. It\u2019s solid and sturdy yet appears light and graceful. I just can\u2019t get enough of it.&#8221;<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Guillerme graduated from Paris\u2019s \u00c9cole Boulle in 1934 with a degree in design and architecture, while Chambron studied at the School of Applied Arts in Reims. Drut, of New York gallery <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/dealers\/maison-gerard\/\">Maison Gerard<\/a>. &#8220;When it is closed, it is a comfortable table for three people, with one end of the table flush against the wall. Open the base, lift the top, and you have a dining table for up to eight people.&#8221;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>After the war ended, Guillerme moved to Lille, in northern France; Chambron left his job as a painter and decorator in Paris and joined him in 1948. In 1949, the pair met \u00c9mile Dariosecq, a skilled cabinetmaker who enthusiastically agreed to manufacture the duo\u2019s designs, leading to the start of Votre Maison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Guillerme et Chambron were as prolific as they were talented, creating more than 2,000 designs in the second half of the 20th century, which they produced in a former gun factory. But now it can hold a cup \u2014 times change. Either way, to me it&#8217;s fabulous: beautiful silhouette, chic, stylish and very comfortable. One of my all-time favorite chairs.&#8221;<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/origin\/european\/\">European furniture<\/a> in the postwar period largely prioritized function as much as it did form and lacked any unnecessary ornamentation. Guillerme et Chambron wanted people to actually use their furniture, not just look at it. Their signature touches include ornate tiles, hidden drawers and vibrant textiles on pieces like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/guillerme-et-chambron\/furniture\/storage-case-pieces\/wardrobes-armoires\/\">wardrobes<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/guillerme-et-chambron\/furniture\/storage-case-pieces\/shelves\/\">shelving<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/guillerme-et-chambron\/furniture\/lighting\/\">lighting<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/guillerme-et-chambron\/furniture\/seating\/benches\/\">benches<\/a> and other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/guillerme-et-chambron\/furniture\/seating\/\">seating<\/a>. Plus, it looks amazing from every angle, without taking up too much space.&#8221;<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Votre Maison was a full-service design firm, creating interiors as well as furnishings. Although Guillerme et Chambron were a team, they handled different aspects of the business: Guillerme designed much of the furniture, while Chambron concentrated on decor. In 1983, they passed their enterprise on to Chambron\u2019s son, Herv\u00e9, a designer and also a graduate of \u00c9cole Boulle. When they&#8217;re stacked, it&#8217;s possible to move all three at once by picking up the largest table, he explains. &#8220;This is a very clever design. Beware, however, of tilting them. The two lower tables would fall, and most likely the tiles would break. I learned it the hard way.&#8221;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Benoist F. Drut, owner of New York design gallery <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/dealers\/maison-gerard\/\">Maison Gerard<\/a>, notes that the solid oak construction of their pieces is often underappreciated. \u201cThis is likely a factor that leads to their work&#8217;s being perceived as austere,\u201d he says. \u201cHowever, I can assure you that an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/guillerme-et-chambron\/furniture\/seating\/armchairs\/\">armchair<\/a> upholstered in shearling will be glorious in Aspen. And as I always say, follow your instincts, not any rules \u2014 there is no right or wrong way to do it.
