Robert Guillerme (1913\u201390) and Jacques Chambron (1914\u20132001), the French creative duo behind mid-20th-century furniture company Votre Maison<\/a>, met under unusual circumstances: They discussed design while imprisoned in a forced-labor camp. The pair\u2019s combined talents later resulted in modern<\/a> furniture with distinctive details. Today, Guillerme et Chambron<\/a> desks<\/a>, dining tables<\/a>, chairs<\/a> and other pieces still look conceptually playful and vibrant and can fit harmoniously into any home.<\/p>\n\n\n

\"Sculptural<\/a>
“I have a soft spot for this stunning angular, sculptural sideboard<\/a>,” says Naomi Verbeek, design historian at Dutch seller Morentz<\/a>. “It\u2019s a true statement piece that would be the star of any living room. The beautifully carved oak<\/a>, combined with its graphic and playful design, captures everything I love about Guillerme et Chambron. It\u2019s solid and sturdy yet appears light and graceful. I just can\u2019t get enough of it.”<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n

Guillerme graduated from Paris\u2019s \u00c9cole Boulle in 1934 with a degree in design and architecture, while Chambron studied at the School of Applied Arts in Reims. They were captured by the Germans in East Prussia during the Second World War and struck up a friendship over their mutual love for all things design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Guillerme<\/a>
The Portefeuille table<\/a> folds in half like a wallet. “It has a very unusual shaped top,” says Benoist F. Drut, of New York gallery Maison Gerard<\/a>. “When it is closed, it is a comfortable table for three people, with one end of the table flush against the wall. Open the base, lift the top, and you have a dining table for up to eight people.”<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

After the war ended, Guillerme moved to Lille, in northern France; Chambron left his job as a painter and decorator in Paris and joined him in 1948. In 1949, the pair met \u00c9mile Dariosecq, a skilled cabinetmaker who enthusiastically agreed to manufacture the duo\u2019s designs, leading to the start of Votre Maison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Guillerme et Chambron were as prolific as they were talented, creating more than 2,000 designs in the second half of the 20th century, which they produced in a former gun factory. Their furniture, which was mostly made in different tones of waxed oak<\/a>, adhered to the design style<\/a> that emerged after the war: mid-century modernism<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n

“I love what we call the cup chair<\/a>,” says New York interior designer<\/a> and dealer<\/a> Robert Stilin. “It was originally designed to hold an ashtray. But now it can hold a cup \u2014 times change. Either way, to me it’s fabulous: beautiful silhouette, chic, stylish and very comfortable. One of my all-time favorite chairs.”<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n

European furniture<\/a> in the postwar period largely prioritized function as much as it did form and lacked any unnecessary ornamentation. Guillerme et Chambron wanted people to actually use their furniture, not just look at it. That design philosophy was a pillar of their company: Votre Maison translates to \u201cYour House\u201d in English. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nevertheless, their work is known for its flourishes. Their signature touches include ornate tiles, hidden drawers and vibrant textiles on pieces like wardrobes<\/a>, shelving<\/a>, lighting<\/a>, benches<\/a> and other seating<\/a>. One of Votre Maison\u2019s best-known and most popular designs is the Grand Repos armchair<\/a>, a stately, high-backed wide piece with a skeletal oak frame, six spindles and plush cushions.<\/p>\n\n\n

“If I had to choose something for my own apartment, I\u2019d go for this elegant, sculptural writing desk<\/a>,” Verbeek says. “It\u2019s the perfect combination of style and practicality, with plenty of legroom, spacious drawers with quirky handles and enough surface area for work or creative projects. Plus, it looks amazing from every angle, without taking up too much space.”<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n

Votre Maison was a full-service design firm, creating interiors as well as furnishings. Although Guillerme et Chambron were a team, they handled different aspects of the business: Guillerme designed much of the furniture, while Chambron concentrated on decor. In 1983, they passed their enterprise on to Chambron\u2019s son, Herv\u00e9, a designer and also a graduate of \u00c9cole Boulle. Production continued until the company\u2019s closure, in 2000.<\/p>\n\n\n

“One of my personal favorites, which I feel hasn\u2019t yet been fully appreciated, is the Thierry dining chair<\/a>,” says Verbeek when asked to cite an underrated design. “Its fun, organic shape makes it not only a unique design but also incredibly comfortable.”<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n

\u201cWhat strikes me every time I encounter pieces by Guillerme et Chambron is the exceptional craftsmanship and attention to detail in the woodwork,\u201d says Naomi Verbeek, design historian at Netherlands-based furniture dealer Morentz<\/a>. \u201cMade from beautiful and durable French oak that will last forever, they truly stand the test of time. The quality is undeniable, and there’s something so satisfying about the solid yet refined construction.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Tile-topped<\/a>
Drut is a fan of these tile-topped nesting tables<\/a>, which slide together. When they’re stacked, it’s possible to move all three at once by picking up the largest table, he explains. “This is a very clever design. Beware, however, of tilting them. The two lower tables would fall, and most likely the tiles would break. I learned it the hard way.”<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Benoist F. Drut, owner of New York design gallery Maison Gerard<\/a>, notes that the solid oak construction of their pieces is often underappreciated. \u201cThis is likely a factor that leads to their work’s being perceived as austere,\u201d he says. \u201cHowever, I can assure you that an armchair<\/a> upholstered in shearling will be glorious in Aspen. Or take a more breathable, organic, summer-weight fabric, and it will be perfect for the beach house in the Hamptons.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New York\u2013based interior designer Robert Stilin<\/a>, who also deals in vintage furniture<\/a>, admires the pair\u2019s balance of aesthetic and practical concerns. \u201cThe shape and form of each piece is unique and unusual,\u201d he says. \u201cThe designs are generally function-oriented, and the seating is very comfortable.\u201d He also values the pieces\u2019 versatility. \u201cI just find it all good-looking, stylish and easy to mix in.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Drut agrees that the designs work in a surprising range of settings. \u201cThese pieces can be incorporated so easily and always look very elegant and add warmth, resulting in interiors that are cozy and inviting,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n

“This is another example of their ingenuity and a work that I have grown to appreciate, so much so that I have one at home,” Drut says of an adjustable coffee table<\/a> that can rise to dining table height. “This is a brilliant design that is a perfect fit for a small space.”<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n

His best advice for arranging them<\/a> in a room? \u201cMost of the time our clients mix and match periods and styles<\/a> and sprinkle a couple of Guillerme et Chambron pieces in with the work of other designers. And as I always say, follow your instincts, not any rules \u2014 there is no right or wrong way to do it. Stop listening to everyone, trust yourself, and be daring.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t
