\u201cThe house<\/a> is a very specific Pacific Northwest style by the architect Jim Cutler,\u201d says interior designer Markham Roberts<\/a>, describing a project in northern Washington State. \u201cIt sits on a spectacular property, nestled in an old-growth evergreen forest at the edge of a 300-hundred-foot sheer cliff overlooking the Strait of Juan de Fuca, the San Juan Islands and the Pacific Ocean.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a window-lined conversation nook, Roberts deployed a neutral color scheme with a focus on natural materials so as not to distract from the view. He custom designed the cotton-velvet banquette sofas<\/a>, horn end tables<\/a> and lamps made from vintage wine bottles. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe couple who live here are sophisticated world travelers, and so I wanted to use things from their travels, mixed in happily with mid-century Scandinavian<\/a>, Italian modern<\/a>, Asian and African pieces,\u201d Roberts says. To that end, he mingled an 18th-century Korean lacquer cabinet<\/a> with an African drum<\/a> table, a Franco Albini<\/a> rattan stool, Hans Wegner<\/a> woven rope chairs, Cedric Hartman<\/a> tent lamps and pillows<\/a> from several continents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWith all country houses I do,\u201d the designer adds, \u201cwhether at the beach, in the mountains or on a ranch in the middle of nowhere, I want to make something subtly luxurious and comfortable<\/a> that fits in well with the surroundings and reflects or suits the inhabitants.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

\u201cWe bought this house<\/a> as a real fixer-upper right as my husband and I entered a new season of empty nesting,\u201d Aymee Kuhlman, CEO and cofounder<\/a> of the design firm Light and Dwell<\/a>, says of her home overlooking a valley and golf course in Corvallis, Oregon. \u201cWe took the house back to studs, reconfigured the floor plan and set out for a cottage-in-the-woods feel.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kuhlman envisioned the dining room as a place for family and friends to hang out \u2014 \u201cto move from a beautiful meal to a competitive game of cards<\/a>,\u201d as she puts it. \u201cOur guests honestly don\u2019t want to leave!\u201d All the furniture here is vintage or antique, including the farmhouse-style table<\/a>, cane-and-wood chairs<\/a>, Oriental rug<\/a> and bar cart<\/a> with turned wood legs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe plates<\/a> were passed down from my grandmother, who collected antique dishware<\/a>, and the candlestick holders<\/a> on the table<\/a> are from our wedding,\u201d Kuhlman says. \u201cHappy 30th to us!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

True to the firm\u2019s name, tall windows with translucent curtains let in the fickle Pacific Northwest sunlight, which is contrasted by a deep taupe paint on the ceiling and walls. \u201cWe love a good mix of old and new, moody and intimate, with the dark paint really framing the picture of nature outside.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

In rural Connecticut, Giancarlo Valle<\/a> peered into the soul of an 1863 former parsonage, wanting to honor its past lives when reincarnating it as a pleasantly quirky nest<\/a> for his own family of four. \u201cThe previous owner had a very distinctive style for the living room<\/a>, with rich reds, salmons and pinks,\u201d Valle says. \u201cWe wanted to play into that but also give it our own spin.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He kept the 1920s pinewood paneling and introduced a sumptuous red velvet sofa<\/a> made by his furniture studio, mauve throw pillows<\/a> and an exuberantly eccentric portrait by Anastasia Bay, which he hung to the left of the bay window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe also brought in some Mexican butaque chairs<\/a>, which were beat up and really blend well with the other objects,\u201d the designer says. It\u2019s true: The sling-like seats pair beautifully with the crinkled Ingo Mauer<\/a> table lamps, gridded Gianfranco Frattini<\/a> cocktail table and scruffy raffia-and-wood Half Moon club chairs by Green River Project. All are set on a sage-green rug that’s part of Valle’s collection for Nordic Knots<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWith a country house, you have to be casual and approachable<\/a>,\u201d Valle explains. \u201cYou want the feeling of coming in and immediately relaxing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

For a cabin in the Colorado Rockies<\/a>, Clive Lonstein<\/a> upped the European sophistication to create the impression of an Alpine chalet occupied by savvy cosmopolitans. \u201cI wanted the overall space to feel authentic, establishing a solid architectural foundation with rustic elements,\u201d the designer says. \u201cIn this study, I aimed to juxtapose those elements with elevated pieces.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here, a sleek 1898\u201399 armchair by Richard Riemerschmid<\/a> mingles with a Danish modern<\/a> chair by Frits Henningsen<\/a>, behind which an antique floral tapestry<\/a> hangs over a classic sideboard<\/a>. The hardy lamp is by Paul Dupr\u00e9-Lafon<\/a> and the handwoven rug came from FJ Hakimian<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBy selecting pieces that depart from traditional country aesthetics, I aim to give the space a fresh, contemporary edge<\/a>,\u201d Lonstein explains. \u201cThis approach balances the rugged qualities of the country setting with a more nuanced and dynamic interior.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

On Indiana\u2019s Lake Maxinkuckee, Tom Stringer<\/a> filled a traditional house with calming colors and textures to match the freshwater vibes outside. \u200b\u200b\u201cThe classic Cape Cod\u2013style home<\/a> includes a first-floor owner\u2019s suite that enjoys a commanding view of the water, especially from the bed \u2014 a nice way to wake up in the morning,\u201d he says. \u201cSimple lines, a restful color scheme and quality materials keep the focus on that view.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Accordingly, he sourced a four-poster bed from Holly Hunt<\/a> and added a Rose Tarlow<\/a> headboard in creamy leather. A sage Phillip Jeffries<\/a> wallcovering and a Lee Industries<\/a> ottoman in tufted Jim Thompson<\/a> fabric carry the greenery indoors; they\u2019re offset by a rosy Stephen Gerould lamp and a Minton-Spidell<\/a> lounge chair in red-and-white Sister Parish<\/a> upholstery. Hunt Slonem<\/a> painted the expressionistic<\/a> bunny peeking through a neoclassical picture frame<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn country houses, I value a certain directness and simplicity<\/a> in the finishes and furnishings I choose,\u201d Stringer says. \u201cIt just seems to flow with the idea of an uncomplicated life to be enjoyed there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

\u201cWhen we\u2019re working on a country house, we often have three words in the back of our minds: cozy<\/em>, comfort<\/em> and classic<\/em>,\u201d says Christine Carney, director of Blackberry Farm Design<\/a>. Nestled in the Great Smoky Mountains of Tennessee, this shingle-clad house<\/a> certainly fits the bill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the great room, Carney\u2019s team brought in plenty of seating to surround the river-stone fireplace<\/a>, including a pair of neutral linen sofas<\/a>, as well as vintage armchairs<\/a> and club chairs<\/a>. The rustic wide-board cocktail table<\/a> was made by a local craftsman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Floor-to-ceiling windows wrap around the home, providing stunning vistas of leafy treetops and rolling foothills. Says Carney, \u201cIt is the sort of room where you want to light the fire, snuggle in with your favorite book<\/a> and enjoy a glass of wine on a rainy day.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

North of the Golden Gate Bridge, in the San Francisco Bay, sits 2.41-square-mile Belvedere Island. A couple hundred homes dot the hilly, forested islet, which has ordinances protecting its natural beauty and historic charm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One such structure is a 1940 Tudor Revival gem<\/a> with interiors reimagined by Lauren Geremia<\/a>, who says she aimed to provide the homeowners with well-crafted, timeless spaces<\/a> embodying \u201ca California version of living that feels bright, natural and comfortable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another goal was to fill the house with merriment as often as possible. \u201cThis property is meant to be used by multiple generations of our clients\u2019 family, gathering from across the globe in California to enjoy summers, holidays and special occasions,\u201d the designer explains. Guests need to eat, so Geremia placed the clients\u2019 massive mid-century-modern<\/a> dining set in the cathedral-like dining room (featured in this year\u2019s 1stDibs 50<\/a>) and created a cozy breakfast nook for less-formal meals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Like the rest of the house, the eat-in kitchen features shades of gold and green, including a Michael Finizio custom-crafted banquet upholstered in a Rogers and Goffigon<\/a> textile, vintage chairs<\/a> with cushions covered in lime Pierre Frey<\/a> Honolulu fabric and a wide yellow vase<\/a>. The circular Hauvette & Madani<\/a> dining table echoes the fine woodwork found in many of the rooms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe try to respond to the outside environment with the colors and materials we integrate into the interiors,\u201d Geremia says, \u201censuring the entire property is respected for a pleasant, cohesive experience.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

Barrie Benson<\/a> knew what not to do for the soaring great room of a beach house in Wilmington, North Carolina<\/a>. \u201cWe knew it would not be where people went and lay down to watch TV,\u201d she says. \u201cThe homeowners are big entertainers with a large family and many friends. It was more about games, puzzles, cocktails and enjoying the view.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To maximize the hosting potential, she says, she and her team \u201cselected a big open sectional that\u2019s not too cushy, game tables<\/a> and fabrics that take a back seat to let the view shine.\u201d A large abstraction by Deborah Dancy<\/a> over the fireplace draws the eye back inside. \u201cThe clients host an annual karaoke party, so the room gets lots of use!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A pair of mid-century tables<\/a> are surrounded by Hans Wegner Wishbone chairs<\/a> in turquoise and cream, reflecting the sea and clouds outside. But Benson also had a more tangible source of hues to work from here. \u201cThis particular client came to us with a collection of about 50 seashells<\/a>,\u201d the designer shares, \u201cand it inspired the color palette for the entire home.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

Michael Hilal<\/a> was tasked with revamping the interiors of a streamlined house<\/a> built in a mix of architectural styles in the quaint coastal village of Del Mar, California.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe home is what I would call a mid-century-modern<\/a> revival \u2014 the look is reminiscent of a post-and-beam structure, but the scale is that of a contemporary house. So, we wanted to lean into that vibe but with interiors that still felt fresh,\u201d he says. \u201cToo many times, you see people with mid-century homes that begin feeling a bit like a Mad Men<\/em> set<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The dining area perfectly expresses the mix of modern and contemporary elements, with blond wide-plank flooring, a brass Apparatus<\/a> light fixture, a custom-crafted wood dining table<\/a> and mod Verner Panton<\/a> chairs in saffron velvet, \u201cwhich is probably the boldest color in the home,\u201d Hilal says. \u201cIt works as a nice shift from the Farrow & Ball Studio Green\u2013painted kitchen into more beige furnishings in the living room.\u201d The hunter-green cabinets also resonate with the foliage visible through extra-tall windows on both sides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOne of our big goals for a more location-based project is to accentuate what\u2019s around it,\u201d the designer explains. \u201cYou can make bold, interesting choices with the design, but you should consider what you are framing outside the window.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

For a country retreat<\/a> in Washington, Connecticut, Christopher Boshears<\/a> designed an \u201cinviting and dynamic interior that was equally as cozy for a family of three as it was for visiting guests,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The living room features a nonidentical pair of rouge Roman Thomas armchairs and a wonderfully squishy sofa in wool velvet, backgrounded by playful squiggly curtains by Jim Thompson<\/a>. Vintage elements include a trio of circa 1950 leather nesting tables<\/a> in the center and glazed-ceramic 1950s lamps from Carlos De La Puente Antiques<\/a>. The photograph of the Washington Square Arch<\/a> may look old because of its sepia visage, but it\u2019s actually a 2018 composition by James Bleecker<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur clients are an active couple who enjoy congregating, whether it be dinner with the family, friends by the fireplace or a full-house celebration,\u201d Boshears says. \u201cWe wanted a seamless blend of comfort and flexibility, an environment that is intimate yet can be ready to accommodate a community gathering.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
