\u201cSoft and cuddly\u201d are likely not the first attributes that come to mind when thinking of an Herm\u00e8s handbag<\/a>. Take the structured Kelly bag<\/a>. Introduced in 1935 as the Sac \u00e0 d\u00e9p\u00eaches (and renamed after Grace Kelly<\/a> in 1977), it is an enduring symbol of elegance and sophistication. Typically crafted from calfskin leather or, in rarer examples<\/a>, exotic hides like lizard<\/a>, alligator<\/a> or crocodile<\/a>, the Kelly is revered for its clean lines and expert craftsmanship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then, Jean-Paul Gaultier<\/a> came along and shook things up with the suede-and-shearling Herm\u00e8s Teddy Kelly<\/a>. A bold step outside the orange box, the design was introduced in a 35cm version as part of Herm\u00e8s\u2019s Fall\/Winter 2005 collection, when Gaultier, one of fashion\u2019s most famed enfants terribles<\/a>, was in charge<\/a> of the house\u2019s creative direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWho else but Gaultier would have dared Herm\u00e8s<\/a> to make a shearling bag?\u201d says Debra Kent, of mightychic<\/a>, who is offering this 2022 gray 20cm Teddy Kelly on 1stDibs.<\/p>\n\n\n

Although instantly recognizable as a Kelly, the Teddy, formally known as the Kelly pluche, is rather unusual. The fluffy shearling trim that wraps around the bag’s edges and top handles endows its sleek form \u2014 fabricated in this case from rich pebble-gray Grizzly suede with coordinating Swift leather<\/a> accents and palladium hardware \u2014 with a dose of whimsy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFor me, the Teddy is up there with the Kellywood<\/a>,\u201d says Kent, referring to a rare release from 2020<\/a> made from bog oak with intricate metal inlay, which she also offers on 1stDibs<\/a>. \u201cIt proves that the Kelly can be made out of anything and still retain its timeless silhouette and status.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The design belongs in the upper echelon of Herm\u00e8s creations \u2014 limited editions<\/a> crafted in such small numbers that, if and when they become available, they are offered only to the brand\u2019s most important clients. Even the packaging of these items is exclusive: Colloquially known as \u201cblue box\u201d bags, they are housed in special orange presentation boxes with a special navy-blue lining.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the Teddy wasn\u2019t designed for display alone. \u201cIt\u2019s meant to be worn,\u201d says Kent. And its playfulness doesn\u2019t make the style less versatile than other Kelly bags. \u201cIt only makes it better!” she insists. “It\u2019s perfect for a wintry apr\u00e8s-ski, of course, but I also see visions of this bag worn with jeans<\/a> and a crisp white shirt or a backless black gown<\/a>. It\u2019s like a fabulous piece of jewelry<\/a> \u2014 it goes with anything.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Teddy Kelly is a cheeky testament to the strength of Herm\u00e8s\u2019s timeless design<\/a> and superior craftsmanship. Collectors<\/a> of the brand often say they\u2019re in search of their \u201cunicorn,\u201d that elusive piece that takes time and dedication to track down. For the buyer seeking a special bag that\u2019s as clever as it is chic, this huggable Teddy bear is a singular prize.<\/p>\n\n\n\t
