Created in 1966 by the revered American designer David Webb<\/a>, this palm-size chrysanthemum brooch<\/a> is something of a superstar. It is highlighted to spectacular visual effect in the recently published The Art of David Webb<\/em>, whose author, jewelry historian Ruth Peltason<\/a>, connects it to the Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai<\/a>\u2019s 1833\u201334 woodblock print Chrysanthemums and Horsefly<\/em> (residing in the collection of the Minneapolis Institute of Art). Whether Webb saw this specific print is unclear, but the voluptuous form of the brooch\u2019s blossom, with its incurved coral petals forming a tight, compact ball, bears a remarkable resemblance to Hokusai’s central bloom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe fact that it includes diamonds makes it more precious,\u201d Sima Ghadamian, owner of Sima G. Ltd.<\/a>, says of the jewel, which she is offering on 1stDibs. \u201cAnd yet, it doesn’t scream, \u2018I’m expensive.\u2019 It just screams, \u2018I’m unique and beautiful.\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ghadamian notes that the piece stands out within Webb\u2019s body of work<\/a>, not just because it is one-of-a-kind but also because it marks a departure from the brooches in vogue in the previous decade. It was \u201cfresh and new for its time,\u201d she says, explaining that where 1950s brooches<\/a> were more traditionally floral-themed and ladylike, Webb\u2019s vibrant sculptural coral blossom, set alongside a spiral of cabochon emeralds, was \u201caudacious and bold \u2014 a very modern look \u2014 and to me, it feels very American.\u201d By \u201cAmerican,\u201d Ghadamian means \u201cdaring,\u201d a quality that she says draws her \u2014 and many collectors \u2014 to the designer\u2019s pieces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With brooches<\/a> back in favor \u2014 among men and women alike \u2014 this chrysanthemum can be styled a number of ways, beyond pinning it to a lapel or neckline. For a bit of fun, Ghadamian suggests that you thread a silk ribbon through the closure on the back to form a choker or necklace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou can also wear it at your hip, which is something that women used to do in the \u201940s and \u201950s,\u201d she says. \u201cI think that\u2019s a very elegant way to wear it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With a relaxed, casual outfit, the brooch \u201cwill elevate your look to something really special,\u201d she adds. \u201cIt’s almost like wearing a piece of art. When people see you, they\u2019ll know that somebody with great taste is in the room.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t
