Brimming with diamonds<\/a> and colored gemstones in a cascading rainbow of hues, this breathtaking bib necklace<\/a> is as fresh, daring and dramatic as any contemporary masterpiece, yet it was crafted more than 150 years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The piece hails from the beginning of the Victorian era<\/a>\u2019s Grand Period, when jewelry was unapologetically large, opulent and richly symbolic. \u201cIt\u2019s a truly mesmerizing necklace that remained in one family for many generations before I acquired it,\u201d says Keith Feldman, the third-generation dealer at the helm of Los Angeles\u2013based KFK Jewelers, Inc.<\/a>, who is offering the piece on 1stDibs. \u201cWhat I find magical about it is that it moves your mind to more decadent times. When you know it\u2019s Victorian<\/a>, you instantly think of the places and people it has been exposed to \u2014 extravagant balls, regal celebrations, illicit affairs \u2014 and yet it\u2019s still so modern and versatile.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Combining cushion-<\/a> and rose-cut<\/a> diamonds with a kaleidoscope of round-cut sapphires<\/a>, zircons<\/a>, tourmalines<\/a>, amethysts<\/a> and garnets<\/a>, the necklace shimmers in a palette of tones ranging from translucent lilac and pale lemon to deep chestnut brown and bright cherry red. Minimalist claw settings help to highlight the brilliance and radiance of the stones, while lace-like 14-karat-gold metalwork makes them seem to float against the skin. Those on the front fringe are suspended from knife-edge bars, allowing them to sway as you move.<\/p>\n\n\n

It only takes a small leap of the imagination to conjure a mental picture of how this necklace would have been worn back in the 1860s: no doubt paired with a sumptuous silk bustle gown whose plunging neckline fully showcased the collarbone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The piece has an interesting recent history: It was the star lot of the high jewelry sale slated to take place at Sotheby\u2019s London on March 24, 2020, which happened to be the day after the UK government announced a nationwide lockdown to prevent the spread of the COVID pandemic. \u201cThe necklace made the cover of the catalogue, which was really exciting. But given the unsettling and unforeseen situation that unfolded around the world, I decided to pull it from auction,\u201d Feldman says, adding, \u201cIt just didn\u2019t feel right \u2014 a good decision, because I was able to admire it a little longer myself.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For him, the piece’s allure lies in its stones: \u201cIt doesn\u2019t repeat. That is to say, one side doesn\u2019t match the other, which to me, places it in the realm of fine art<\/a>, and modernist<\/a> fine art at that.\u201d Specifically, Feldman likens the necklace to an \u201cabstract canvas,\u201d reminiscent of a Jackson Pollock<\/a> in its expression of pure emotion \u2014 experimental, unconventional and adventurous yet also imbued with a distinct sense of knowingness and order. \u201cThe combination of colored gemstones set in this surprising arrangement,” he says, “lends it an invigorating quality that\u2019s wholly unique. It really is a thing of absolute joy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t

Alexandra Zagalsky is a London-based journalist specializing in luxury topics, art and travel content. She began her journalistic career in Paris, where she worked on a cultural guide for English-speaking expats. She has written extensively on the subject of vintage watches<\/a> and describes the Cartier<\/a> Crash as her favorite timepiece. \u201cIt\u2019s a great emblem of the Swinging Sixties and an adaptation of the house\u2019s classic Baignoire<\/a> Allong\u00e9e wristwatch, its sinuous Daliesque style apparently inspired by a model brought into the London Cartier workshop that had been distorted in a car crash,\u201d she says. \u201cI love it for all sorts of reasons, not least because it\u2019s so unconventional and daring, as all great design objects often are.\u201d
