With its wall of windows and ceiling of natural wood, the home office of a Northern California residence<\/a> designed by Nicole Hollis<\/a> is a sanctuary for concentration or reflection. \u201cOur aim was to create a workspace that reflects the homeowner\u2019s personality, supports his professional needs and serves as a retreat,\u201d Hollis<\/a> says. \u201cWe designed a custom desk for his computer and shelving for books<\/a>, family photos and personal objects.\u201d Hollis also designed the two chairs facing the desk, made of rift-sawn oak with leather upholstery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To make the room work for more than just work, she outfitted it with a wool-upholstered sofa by Flexform<\/a> and hand-rubbed brass and bronze coffee tables by Michel Amar. The Faye Toogood<\/a> lamp beside the sofa is made of tumbled aluminum and fiberglass. \u201cThe room is serene,\u201d Hollis says, \u201cwith nature as its backdrop.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clive Lonstein<\/a> brought a little English country<\/a> charm to a historic house in Connecticut<\/a>, deploying vibrant colors and an abundance of vintage pieces. \u201cThe client wanted a home office that felt personal, enveloping and conducive to both work and contemplation,\u201d Lonstein<\/a> says. \u201cWe selected a palette that is both rich and soothing, incorporated bespoke furniture with an artisanal touch and maintained an organic connection to the rest of the home\u2019s design language.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The dramatic mid-century Fornasetti<\/a> folding screen features a bird motif that the designer says \u201cintroduces a narrative of nature into the space.\u201d The wooden desk and chair are by Mira Nakashima<\/a>, while the easy chair with sheepskin upholstery is vintage Viggo Boesen<\/a>. A Giuseppe Ostuni<\/a> for Oluce<\/a> table lamp shares the desktop with vessels by, from left, Berndt Friberg<\/a>, Rose Cabat<\/a> and Eva St\u00e6hr-Nielsen<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFor us, it always starts with a feeling, and this room was about quiet focus,\u201d says Banda Design Studio<\/a> founder Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi<\/a>, referring to the home office of a London townhouse<\/a>. \u201cThere\u2019s a certain honesty to the materials \u2014 limewashed walls, reclaimed timber, linen \u2014 and a kind of grounding that happens when you surround yourself with objects that have a story.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mapelli Mozzi started with a vintage Joaquim Tenreiro<\/a> rosewood desk; an upholstered chair and a wooden one, both from his own Banda Gallery furniture collection; and a Paolo Moschino table lamp with a brass shade<\/a>. An oversize sheepskin armchair<\/a>, a reclaimed Italian oak beam used as a plinth, and a vintage lantern<\/a> overhead instill a lived-in, intentional air. \u201cWe didn\u2019t want it to feel like a home office in the usual sense,\u201d the designer says. \u201cIt\u2019s more about creating a space where you actually want to spend time, whether you\u2019re working, thinking or simply being.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a family home<\/a> by Michael Hilal<\/a> in Del Mar, a village in San Diego County close to Torrey Pines Reserve and know for beautiful cliff views, the decor leans into a sense of being close to the earth. \u201cThe palette is very organic, but it was important that we still introduce color,\u201d Hilal says. \u201cWe mixed local and contemporary pieces with strong art<\/a>, but everything has a modern heart.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A vintage Turkish rug<\/a> grounds the client’s office, while the bright Herm\u00e8s<\/a> for Dedar<\/a> fabric on a Casamidy<\/a> armchair provides a jolt of color that plays off the walnut Lawson-Fenning desk<\/a>. \u201cYou spend a lot of time in your office, so don\u2019t forget to bring in some beauty,\u201d Hilal advises. \u201cEverybody needs inspiration, especially during the workday.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Home offices shouldn\u2019t look like corporate cubicles. In a charming workspace in a new-construction house in the Hamptons<\/a> designed by Heidi Caillier<\/a>, the joyous Jean Monro<\/a> wallpaper and soft-pink millwork are the antithesis of institutional greige. \u201cThe space connects to the primary bedroom, so we wanted it to feel cohesive but also like its own space,\u201d Caillier<\/a> says. \u201cThe wallpaper is an oversize floral, which adds a touch of modernity to a classic print.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Caillier designed the desk and added a Martin & Brockett<\/a> woven-rush chair, along with a Victoria Morris<\/a> table lamp. The vintage Turkish rug<\/a> comes from Galerie Shabab<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a penthouse<\/a> in the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, D.C., Zo\u00eb Feldman<\/a> created a home office to offer her client, ironically enough, a space in which to slow down. \u201cWe wanted this room to feel like a little jewel box \u2014 rich, moody and totally enveloping,\u201d she says. \u201cIt\u2019s tucked just off a sun-drenched living room, so creating contrast was key.\u201d Feldman used Farrow & Ball Beetle Black for the walls, ceiling and built-ins. A 1960s ceiling light by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni<\/a>, found on 1stDibs, ensures the room isn\u2019t too dark, as does the ceramic lamp from In Common With.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The walnut desk is from Lawson-Fenning<\/a>, and the molded-wood chairs are by Ruemmler. The custom casework is something of a Feldman signature<\/a>. \u201cI always incorporate concealed storage \u2014 ideally with a bookshelf moment \u2014 to tuck away things like printers or extra tech,\u201d she notes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the New York City apartment<\/a> of interior designers Christine and John Gachot<\/a>, the office is as friendly as it is functional. \u201cWe needed an office where John could focus late into the evenings. But it was important that the space felt like an extension of our home\u2019s living areas, a space to unwind and feel separation from the studio,\u201d Christine says. \u201cAdding soft drapery, warm lighting, art<\/a> and a personal piece we adore \u2014 a vintage backgammon set<\/a>, for playing our family\u2019s favorite board game \u2014 created a relaxed environment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To anchor the space, the couple<\/a> selected a mid-century-modern wood desk<\/a>, pairing it with a side chair by Norman Cherner<\/a> that Christine found through 1stDibs. In the seating area, a settee and a goat-leather chair, both by Erik Kolling Andersen<\/a> for Peder Pedersen<\/a>, are grouped with a vintage coffee table<\/a>. On the wall is a lithograph by Robert Rauschenberg<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Staying focused can be a challenge in a home office with a stunning view of the Hudson River. In a New York apartment<\/a> with just such a distraction, Damon Liss<\/a> gave his client a fighting chance at productivity by designing a practical but elegant space anchored by built-ins for storage and books, as well as artwork by Brice Marden<\/a>. Since the office is visible from the living room, Liss<\/a> chose a desk with refined craftsmanship, by Tim Vranken<\/a>. \u201cThe wood slats and leather top add warmth, texture and visual interest,\u201d he says. \u201cPairing it with a vintage 1935 B\u00f6hlmarks<\/a> table lamp in brass, stained elm and lacquered steel introduced a vintage layer that ties the space together beautifully.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Liss designed the seating area to be an extension of the main living space, outfitting it with vintage upholstered armchairs<\/a> covered in a velvet mohair alongside a cast-glass-and-steel coffee table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a Miami condo<\/a>, rather than create a dedicated office, Andre Mellone<\/a> placed a desk and chair in a bedroom. \u201cWe wanted to create the feeling that the desk has always been there,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s a decorative element, something that makes sense composition-wise. No one needs to know that my client actually sits and works there sometimes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In keeping with the location, Mellone<\/a> used tropical natural materials throughout the apartment. For the bedroom workspace, he found a 1960s Arthur Umanoff<\/a> chair with caned back and seat on 1stDibs. Atop a 1950s French desk<\/a>, he placed a vintage brass lamp<\/a> from the same decade. Beyond being great-looking, the piece supplies effective task lighting when needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\t
