Your eyes aren\u2019t deceiving you \u2014 bulbous bubble hemlines are back. Whether in the form of a skirt or a dress, designers like Jonathan Anderson<\/a>, Marc Jacobs<\/a>, Azzedine Ala\u00efa<\/a>, among many others, have been creating eye-catching voluminous garments lately. Shoppers are loving the look too: Elle<\/em><\/a> <\/em>cites data showing a 742 percent year-over-year increase in purchases of bubble skirts<\/a> and an 176 percent increase for bubble dresses<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although “bubble hem” might evoke images of neon-hued numbers from the 1980s, its lineage goes much farther back. Significantly more sophisticated takes from early-20th-century designers like Jeanne Lanvin<\/a> and Paul Poiret<\/a> were key to the style\u2019s development and inform the approach of designers today. \u201cIt\u2019s really the maestro of cut and form himself, Crist\u00f3bal Balenciaga, who can be credited with giving full expression to the bubble-shaped silhouette as early as 1950,\u201d Cassidy Zachary, cohost of the Dressed: The History of Fashion<\/em> podcast, told Elle<\/em><\/a>. \u201cWhile history remembers these voluminous, puffed masterpieces as \u2018balloons<\/a>,\u2019 they\u2019re absolutely what we would recognize as the trending bubble hem of today.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whether \u201880s looks are totally your speed or you\u2019d prefer to turn the dial back several decades more, it\u2019s safe to say that the bubble-hemline trend is far from bursting. <\/p>\n\n\n\t
